Coles Track on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia was expanded to service a telephone wire to the Fort as part of Melbourne’s defence system during World War II. A number of German and Japanese destroyers, submarines, and other military craft, operated in Australian waters between 1940 and 1945, threatening the shipping industry and the war effort.

Point Bonita Lighthouse shrouded in fog.

Unfortunately the fog made less than ideal photography conditions, but it was an interesting experience nonetheless. It also was an education moment because we learned why lighthouses are needed.

The hike to the lighthouse is only half a mile, but going back it's all uphill...

As of April 2011, the bridge to the lighthouse is closed. The rangers said it would possibly reopen in early 2012 after repairs are made.

Spurn Point is a three and half mile spit of sand and gravel that protects the Humber Estuary, now owned by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Over time it has both increased in length and moved westwards, and always has been a danger to shipping. Over the years there have been various lighthouses on this site.

Two disused lighthouses remain at Spurn, the one on the left is what was called the Low Light and this is on the estuary side of the spit However when the present lighthouse was built in the late 1800's the low light was no longer needed. It has since been used as an explosive store and then later as a water tower. Now it stands deserted.

The present lighthouse (the one on the right hand side) on the North Sea side of the spit was designed by Thomas Matthews in 1895 and took nearly two years to build. It was last used in 1986. Currently the only warning light on Spurn today is a flashing green starboard light on the very end of the point .

Point Lobos State Reserve, CA

This is one of my favorite lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. Since the mid-morning light was a little bland, I decided to try a long exposure with my 10-stop ND filter to get some cloud movement. Since I normally get a lot of vignetting with this filter, I decided to put the lighthouse in the center of the frame and use the vignetting to draw attention to the subject. It ended up working very well.

Panoramic view from the Point Sur Light Station looking back at California. The buildings on the right (south) side of the point are an abandoned naval base used during the cold war for sonar survellance. It's a ghost town now due to mold infestation. The beach and meadow of the Point is owned privately for ranching. The one lane road stretching from Highway 1 to the base of the Point is just a right-of-way for California State Parks to get to the light station on the end of the point.

View of Point Sur Lighthouse Station in the distance.

Per the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce website: Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean from the spectacular Big Sur Coast, the Point Sur Lightstation stands as a silent sentinel to a by-gone era. Point Sur, a National Historic Landmark, is the only complete turn-of-the-century light station open to the public in California. From 1899 until 1974, families lived and worked in the buildings atop Pt. Sur. Today Point Sur is a ghost town. The unique stone lighthouse still guides ships with its light, though it is now totally automated.

built in 1926 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The light source was dimmed during World War II to avoid aiding the enemy. It was automated in 1971 by the United States Coast Guard. The original third order Fresnel lens still revolves in the lantern room.

The Point Vicente Lighthouse is an important landmark and beacon light relied upon by thousands of ships and pleasure craft. It provides a means of fixing their position, and ensuring their safe passage up and down the coast. The Point Vicente Light Station has been guiding sailing vessels to and from the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbors since March 1926. It was first operated and maintained by the United States Lighthouse Service for 13 years prior to the service being merged with the U.S. Coast Guard, which was delegated all aid-to-navigation responsibilities in 1939. The lighthouse was manned until 1971 when it was automated by a remote electronic aids-to-navigation monitoring system. The cylindrical tower is 67 feet (20 m) tall,[1] and the masonry structure is built on the edge of a 130-foot (40 m) cliff. This places the center of the lantern 185 feet (56 m) above the ocean, and because of this elevation, the 1.1 million candlepower-beam can be seen 29 miles (47 km) away. The most striking feature in the lighthouse is the classical third-order rotating Fresnel Lens located in the lantern. This particular lens was manufactured around 1910 in Paris, France, by Barbier, Bernard and Turenne, the oldest lens making company in the world. This lens is made up of hand-ground prisms held in place by a cast brass frame. The prisms and frame represent an excellent example of the precision achieved by optical scientists and the lens making art in utilizing the known principles and properties of light.

This lighthouse also incorporates a pleasant-sounding foghorn to audibly warn ships during times of low visibility which are common to the area.
