We were thrilled to see this grizzly, plus another, plus two black bears, at the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site in Hyder, Alaska. What was as stunning as the bear was the crowd - they stayed almost silent. We couldn't believe people were so well-behaved (so unlike tourists we've seen in Yellowstone and Jasper in particular).
The site is run by the US National Forest Service and is a day-use recreation area in the Salmon River valley near Hyder, Alaska (the lowest point in Alaska you can drive to). Bears can be observed and photographed at the site as they fish for chum and pink salmon in the clear shallow waters of Fish Creek and Marx Creek. Bears use the site from mid-July through early September, following the arrival of salmon that return to the fresh waters of the creeks to spawn. If you go, and the site says there have been bears around, then be patient - take something to read, relax, and wait it out. Very early morning (dawn) and sunset are best.

Photos from my Kodak Tourist. I had a dreadful time with this execrable camera.
The subject matter isn't very interesting, but this was the only photo from the entire roll that wasn't messed up somehow.
