1940s Weekend 2009 - Holt

"S'il te plaît, ne pars pas!"

A Winner at the North Norfolk Photographic Society Annual competition.

North Norfolk Photographic Society was formed in Sheringham more than 50 years ago and has members from all over North Norfolk, including Sheringham, Cromer, Blakeney, Melton Constable, High Kelling and Holt. One of the Society's regular events is their Annual Competition and the section for printed images was held on 3rd March when almost 90 photographs fell to the scrutiny of Derek Leak, on a very welcome repeat visit.

The quality of the pictures was high. 10 of the photographs were awarded full marks - and then Derek Leak picked one called 'Please Don't Go Away' as the overall winner.

This picture was taken at the North Norfolk Railway's 40's weekend and shows a young soldier and his girl in an embrace, with the military vehicles behind ready to take the young man to war.

Recently I came across an innovated form of art called Zentangle.

Among other things Zentangle is a meditative practice recommended for relaxation and for stress relief . Rather like a doodle the emphasis is on relaxing and allowing the patterns to form with out too much contrivance. Usually rendered in black ink after a while I tended to prefer the addition of coloured pencils. Here is one of my attempts at Zantangles or art work inspired by Zentangles

The American Society of Civil Engineers held a Bridges Photo Contest this year and I am thrilled to announce that three of my photos were nominated for Viewers' Choice Award. I have been an ASCE member since my freshman year of college and it would be a tremendous honor to win this award, but I can't do it without your help.

Would you believe this was lit with an AA battery powered LED flashlight? This is a large space. I believe the doors at the top back are five floors above the stage.

The room was completely dark. No windows, no skylights. The slight amount of light trickling in the doors did nothing to light this huge area. The photo itself is nothing special. But I'm fairly pleased with the way it came out considering how dark the space was, and how it was lit.
