Off the coast of Ellwood Mesa are two oil fields Ellwood Oil Filed and South Ellwood Offshore Oil Field and they were important ot the economic development of Santa Barbara area. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Ellwood Mesa was developed for natural gas and oil extraction. The platform seen from the beaches at the mesa is Platform Holly, it has been inactive since the Refugio Oil Spill in 2015. The platform has been decommissioned, transferred ownership to the state, and in 2019 the plug and abandon of the wells began.
