If you have an endangered environment that needs plastering then you really must get one of these, better still, get two, but be warned they are virtually impossible to breed in captivity.

For the first time, last weekend, I did some proper plastering. It was just a little bit, as you can see: The first picture shows a hole in our kitchen ceiling caused by a water leak, which I have cut to a rectangular shape up to the joists, before nailing in a bit of plasterboard. Then the second picture is materials and tools, and then the finished surface, which is rougher than I wanted - I need to find out how real plasterers get that super-smooth surface...
We had some quotes for plastering and decided to do it ourselves as it was out of our budget. I think I did a good job considering I'd never done it before :)

As a decorative artisan concerned with improving indoor air quality, I would like to re-introduce you to the lovely attributes of lime and clay plaster wall finishes for homes and wineries.
Lime plaster surfaces have been around for thousands of years, and are perfectly suited for modern day wine cellars or other areas where moisture may be a concern, since lime plasters emit no VOC's and are mold, mildew and fungal resistant.
Clay and lime plaster walls and ceilings actually help the modern cooling system, in creating a stable climate for the room, holding the temperature and humidity in balance. Lime-based plasters dry hard and continue to cure for months by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air, and reverting back to the original limestone state.
Lime plasters are beautiful when applied, but become even more beautiful with age. Lime plasters are the real thing - the same ingredients that you will find on centuries-old walls in Europe.
Protection: Lime plaster surfaces can protect your home, family and business from some of the most common enemies...mold, mildew and dust through its unique natural properties such as a naturally high pH and dust resistance.
Durability: Lime wall finishes last many, many years against cracking, rotting, moisture and fire. They are easy to maintain and save you time and money.
Green: Clay and lime plaster finishes are rare in that they combine beauty, durability and are considered "Green and Sustainable" by industry professionals.
Thank you for your time in reading this blog post. I hope this helps lend an understanding of the wonderful and unique characteristics of lime and clay plasters, and how they can improve indoor comfort and quality of living in any interior environment.
Lime plaster is a skilled trade. The lime plaster should protect our home for many years...a few hundred??? Lime plaster is nearly carbon neutral as it re-absorbs CO2 as it ages.
Josh finishes off the cleaning up after completing the plastering of the tricky angled sections.
Thanks to Graham for the recommendation!
Ann has been using a combination of clay, sand, linseed oil and horse manure to plaster the only upper framed wall on the house. Normally linseed oil is not used on cob as it limits breathability, but with the conventional style... not an issue.

Sue all smiles as the brown coat on the office / guest room dividing wall is nearing completion. One heck of a cake to ice, this house!
Emerging from his sick bed, Brett plasters the lintel while Sue starts on the reveal. The plastering was finally completed the following day, and now our first guest room needs to dry out before the floor can be sealed, the plasterboard wall painted green, and the timber cornicing, skirting and architraves applied. Carefully taped-in bubble wrap makes a very good window protector that keeps its shape well and doesn't get in the way during finish plastering.
Taken at Spa Aesthetica during a Keep-A-Breast's "treasured chest program." I'm still wondering what I'm going to do with this but have some good ideas including asking my tattoo artist Kurtis Gibson to sketch and/or paint it for me. I loved meeting Amanda Nixon and her volunteer staff who helped make this happen. About 8 other women participated, some post-op, some pre-op like myself. These boobs of mine are special to me because I fed my daughter with them, have stuffed them into some amazing outfits and of course, had lots of fun in the bedroom with them.
I take refuge in knowing my boobs will be back when I wander too far down the road. And I'm grateful for Train's single called "Bruises" which really summarizes how I'm going to feel about the new ones, with their scars and whatever else (nipples, no nipples [aka barbie boobs]) which is all still too far up the road for now.
By Christmas of this year, this will be all be near-distant memory, and years from now... a mere blip on my life's radar. Uncertainty is a game played well in the present moment. Today I'm certain of more things than not... like how much I'm loved & adored and more recently, respected as person who maintains the brighter/lighter side of life.
View of the east of the main bedroom with the narrow windows, prior to plastering. There is one gap in the top row that needs to be filled in with a replacement small bale. The board is our placement for the "truth" window, which we'll remove just before plastering, paint marking a border. This is the last straw wall left to cover up... yay!

We did the scratch coat section shown here in three hours. The attic is the most laborious room in the house, as plaster has to be brought up in buckets from below. Downstairs we can plaster out of a wheelbarrow, and an equivalent section takes an hour.
Romeo the 29-year-old Standardbred gelding is always interested in what the humans are up to. Here he has taken a break from lawnmowing to look into the “monkey stable” while Sue is finishing plaster with water spray and a soft float. This is the same horse who would try to eat the walls before they were plastered – a strawbale house to a horse is a bit like a gingerbread house to people!
