Today is all about plaster. I got a skimcoat on all of the walls and ceiling. After it's dried overnight, one more round of sanding and the walls and ceiling should be near pristine. I've noticed 3-4 spots that will need another round, but they are small potatoes.
FOV: 3" wide.
15 mL of Plaster of Paris was hydrated with 7.5mL of a solution of 1mL sugar and ~20 crystals of CuCl2. On top was added about 1mL of strontium carbonate and 0.5mL of sulfur as well as about 0.03mL of copper carbonate (malachite). After the plaster had set it was heated until bluish yellow incandescence using a MAPP gas torch (gas ran out during heating).
The luminescence of this sample was particularly bright making it a challenge to photograph.

This dated brick fireplace was transformed with Venetian Plaster, to give it a new and contemporary look.
Product samples stuck to walls in the office undercroft. They're still in pretty good nick.

Another composition of the textured plaster wall from yesterday. I took some shots that were closer (showing the waves wider) and some further back (showing a tighter cluster of waves), but I keep coming back to the images from this distance in the middle.

Another photo that's more of a moment rather than a real photo. Our eldest was in Lancaster hospital today for a minor operation, a tenotomy.
She was born with club feet (talipes) and has been treated using the ponsetti method for 9 years now. Her first plaster cast was on by the time she was 2 hours old. This is the latest, which will support her foot until the achiles tendon heals. She had casts for 8 weeks, then a set of boots with a fixed bar to wear for most of the time for 18 months, then another 18 months of just at night. She had a tenotomy & tendon transfer on her right foot 2 weeks after her younger sister was born. She had a cast last year to pull her right foot back in line a bit. And now this, which should be the last.
She's one of the oldest patients being treated with the method in this country. My other half has spent quite a lot of time on the STEPS website helping other parents deal with the difficulties.
So, it may not be the best of my pictures, but it has quite a bit of meaning.
Enrique is standing in front of a plaster cast of a body found in the Stabian baths. The casts were made when archaeologists excavated the site and found human shapes in the ash. The hot ash both buried the victim and incinerated their remains, leaving a body-shaped void. When filled with plaster and allowed to harden, the resulting cast produced a remarkable reproduction of the victim.

'The Alligator Hunters' by Ernest Barrias, one of a pair of impressive plaster high reliefs made to be cast in bronze for the Musee d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris in 1894. The protagonists are meant to be Nubians, hence the title 'alligator' is a little odd for an African scene (and the beast in question clearly looks more Nile crocodile than alligator). See below:

The spectacular Musee d'Orsay in Paris is the city's premier museum after the Louvre and opened in 1986 as an imaginative conversion of the former station building of the Gare Orsay. The building is a fine example of late 19th century architecture, thus the perfect home for a collection of 19th century art.
