A planetary nebula in the constellation Aquarius, approximately 700 light years from earth. Planetary nebulae are the remains of modestly sized stars, similar to our sun, which, having expended their nuclear fuel shed mass and collapse to white dwarfs. The Helix Nebula, because it is relatively close to earth--compared to other planetary nebula--appears very large, approximately one half the diameter of the full moon. This image was created at the General Nathan Twinning Observatory (GNTO), the dark sky site of The Albuquerque Astronomy Society (TAAS) with a Celestron C-11 HD w/ focal reducer operating at 1960 mm f.l. and f/7, an SBIG ST4000XCM camera and a Losmandy G11 mount. Fifteen x 10 minute subs were created at -10 C, along with darks and flats. Processing was done in DSS and PS CS2. From lower left to upper right - Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon and Mars in pretty much a straight line. Mercury was just out of shot below Venus - not even the fisheye could get all five at once!

After a long break, I have once again indulged in my passion polymer clay. This piece was inspired by Bettina Welker. The pattern was carved into soft ivory polymer clay and backed with black clay. Acrylic paints created the antique effect.

Launching from an orbital mother ship, the planetary lander descends to the planet’s surface with a crew of one for either light recon or scientific exploration missions.
Once landed, the lander’s rover separates from the main ship and provides easy and convenient transportation across the alien environment. The rover's grappling claw, photo-sensor and antenna dish all fold out for scientific experiments and then neatly tuck away allowing the vehicle to easily reconnect with the main ship.
This set is the beginning of a larger theme that I am currently developing.
A bit inspired, at least in spirit, by Keyop’s and Jason’s vehicles from ‘Battle of the Planets’ and how they disembark from the Phoenix.
We all know that 2018 will be the year of the Roller Coaster. So the question becomes "how do you make yours unique?" Well, this is my spin on it - Classic Space.
The base frame is mostly the same as the released model, however I color swapped as much as I could in the frame to white to give it a cleaner look. And then I went to town modifying the base with a classic Space theme, along with a few extra touches.
Oh, and the Food stands on the end? Well, people kept telling me they'd look great in a RollerCoaster display, so, here they are, filling out the park. (And if you haven't checked them out on LEGO Ideas, follow this link and hit support. they could become an official set)

The second bubble was produced inside the first one, but it has to be attached to the straw and the camera has to be activated early on.
It's quite a gem. The current tilt of the rings is almost at a maximum, so we get a nice display!
What really hooked me on astrophotography in the first place was the realization and amazement of what can actually be imaged from our backyards. Most people don't even really think about it. The detail seen in amateur equipment these days is better than what an interplanetary spacecraft was able to send back to us only 40 years ago.
From where I live, Saturn doens't get more than 30 degrees above the horizon. Unfortunately it will be that way for years to come, so I just have to settle for shooting through a lot of air (which blurs detail).
To sort that convoluted mess out, shot of Saturn is actually a stack of 15,000 individual exposures. The files that went into this weigh in at 11 gigabytes. All for a subject that is 200 pixels across. I have to go hard drive shopping.

After seeing this frame a few months back, it was a nice suplementary movement alongside the Lufthansa 777 and Rada IL-62. The flight operates several times weekly transporting seasonal produce from Nairobi for distribution within the UK.

Volvo A40D
As a preparation for coming emissions regulations the D12D engine was introduced for A35D and A40D. The D12D engine met US (EPA) step 2, California (CARB) step 2 and Europe (EU) step 2 emission standards. Basic specifications such as power and torque are the same for D12C and D12D engines. The production started in November 2004.
In order to meet the Tier 3 / Stage IIIA legislative demands concerning exhaust emissions, a new version of the Volvo D12 engine was developed for A35D and A40D.
The new engine met US (EPA) Tier 3, California (CARB) Tier 3 and Europe (EU) stage IIIA emission standards.
V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustions Technology) was implemented on the D12D engines for the US market only as from April 2005 and the EU market started from January 2006. The Tier 2/Step II compliant D12D engine continued to be available for affected markets.

One of the few photos of the "Planetary Trio" that has been happening in the sky after sunset lately.
The planetary trio – Jupiter, Venus, Mercury – has been an awesome sight in the west after sunset, and it’s still happening – at least through tonight. A planetary trio is when three planets fit within a circle with a 5-degree, or smaller, diameter. Jupiter, Venus and Mercury meet that definition of a planetary trio from May 24-29, 2013. They were even closer – all be about 3 degrees apart – on May 25, 26 and 27. May 26 was the closest grouping of these three planets until the year 2021.But the show is still going, and May 29 is your last chance to see them while they still meet this definition. Take a look, if your sky is clear – and your horizon unobstructed. You’ll find the planets in the west as soon as the sun sets on these May 2013 evenings. You’ll easily find the two brightest planets there: Venus and Jupiter.

However, when I Googled "Bright Little Star" to get the lyrics, one of my previous images of Sonny titled "Bright Little Star" came up in the results. At least I'm consistent, I guess?

LOCATION: Viroqua, Wisconsin ...gateway to America's unglaciated, Driftless Region ...a small portion of Earth that has miraculously watched virtually unperturbed as each ice age came and went. Viroqua, forever unglaciated it seems.

The Planetary Patroller light mech is most often used for scouting, it lacking a sufficient power plant to support long-term combat.
In less contested areas, Patrollers are deployed as anti-tank support to infantry (for as long as the microreactor can support power demands, those sublimation rifles are devastating). However, this role is temporary; the light mechs retreat once heavier weaponry arrives.
This mondays photos seem to be centered around plastics.
Anyway, as some kind of toy -project i designed a planetary gear (sun, 4 planets, rimwheel), and printed it in green PLA on my K8200 3D-Printer.
It took 3 attempts to get the wheels mechanically working, but this is a closeup of sun (left) and one planet (upper right) of the working set.
Shot in the usual setup, i had to tweak the whitebalance heavyly to match the real color of the PLA, which came out almost blue. I am not sure if PLA does funny things in UV or IR light...
HMM!
This is my first attempt at planetary photography. This was taken through a scope with an effective focal length around 2000mm. The images were capured and stacked from video, using a best 800 of 1000 frames (recording the 5x live-view of the Canon Rebel T1i). Software for capture was BackyardEOS, processed in Registax 6 and Photoshop.
All of these were captured between 10:30 and 11:30pm on the night of 05-MAY-2014. I hope to be imaging at a longer focal length soon so I can get some more resolution, but unfortunately our atmosphere has its own agenda.
Edited Hubble Space Telescope image of the spiral planetary nebula (which is very strange) IRAS 23166+1655.
Original caption: This remarkable picture from the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows one of the most perfect geometrical forms created in space. It captures the formation of an unusual pre-planetary nebula, known as IRAS 23166+1655, around the star LL Pegasi (also known as AFGL 3068) in the constellation of Pegasus (the Winged Horse). The striking picture shows what appears to be a thin spiral pattern of astonishingly regularity winding around the star, which is itself hidden behind thick dust. The spiral pattern suggests a regular periodic origin for the nebula’s shape. The material forming the spiral is moving outwards a speed of about 50 000 km/hour and, by combining this speed with the distance between layers, astronomers calculate that the shells are each separated by about 800 years.The spiral is thought to arise because LL Pegasi is a binary system, with the star that is losing material and a companion star orbiting each other. The spacing between layers in the spiral is expected to directly reflect the orbital period of the binary, which is indeed estimated to be also about 800 years.The creation and shaping of planetary nebulae is an exciting area of stellar evolution. Stars with masses from about half that of the Sun up to about eight times that of the Sun do not explode as supernovae at the ends of their lives. Instead a more regal end awaits them as their outer layers of gas are shed and drift into space, creating striking and intricate structures that to Earth-bound observers often look like dramatic watercolour paintings. IRAS 23166+1655 is just starting this process and the central star has yet to emerge from the cocoon of enveloping dust.This picture was created from images from the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys on Hubble. Images through a yellow filter (F606W, coloured blue) were combined with images through a near-infra red filter (F804W, coloured red). NGC 2392

This stellar relic, NGC 2392, was first spied by William Herschel in 1787.
The planetary nebula began forming about 10,000 years ago, when the dying star began flinging material into space.
The nebula is composed of two elliptically shaped lobes of matter streaming above and below the dying star. In this photo, one bubble lies in front of the other, obscuring part of the second lobe.
NGC 2392 is about 5,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Gemini.
