So, I created what was supposed to be an ocean in a bottle using sand, water, food coloring, oil and sea shells. None of the images really looked like what I had envisioned so I decided to just play and go with plan b. I might revisit the beach in the bottle theme again but then again I might not...

Sometimes we are aware that there is always some kind of planning or method when it fails, even in nature.

I do not identify this species as it was in a garden area and the chances of getting it right would be very low. Another day I will publish a specimen where everything was going well in its development, so it will be easier for someone to recognise it. Enjoy the weekend!

Madrid, Spain. June 2023

I’d noticed the striking white building with its handsome blue roof as we’d passed this way a day earlier, mustering our spirits as best we could under a grey, leaky sky that gave no hint of the beautiful evening we’d later enjoy by the side of the lake at Kirkjufell. I’d also spotted the rough pull in where the road snaked gently upwards through a patch of rocky scrub. “That might make for a shot,” was only the vaguest of thoughts as we passed through this remote area, heading for Arnarstapi and Dritvik Beach beyond. At this stage, the only thing we were certain of was that we’d passed the road that led to the Black Church of Budir and not taken it. And as we were following a circuit on the lonely road of West Snaefellsnes, we knew we’d need to be back this way the following day. That black church screams for attention you see. One of the most impossible to ignore hotspots on a peninsula that offers all sorts of possibilities.

So now we were here again, this time travelling anticlockwise on the most fantastic of coastal roads. Coming from a densely populated country where the sound of the internal combustion engine dominates almost every waking moment, driving here is an unrelenting joy. The Útnesvegur takes you through a brutal and dramatic landscape, where the story of Iceland’s violent volcanic birth is forever on show. In the far western reaches, we drove for miles, flanked by moss filled lava fields, roughly hewn and worn by the rages of a thousand winter storms, barely seeing any other vehicles at all. At times only the bulk of the ice clad Snaefellsjokull, rising mightily above everything else here seemed to anchor us to the land as if by some gravitational pull. A harsh elemental landscape in a time and place that has crept in under my skin and stayed there to settle into a contented glow that burns slowly within, forever calling me back. Having more time to explore on this, our second Icelandic adventure, was enabling us to see gems we’d had no time for on that dash around the ring road three summers earlier. You could easily fill an entire visit to Iceland with Snaefellsnes alone.

By now I was in a particularly fine mood. We’d already bagged compositions at half a dozen spots on this amazingly productive day as we made our way around the circuit. To add to the internal satisfaction levels, I’d also visited the fish and chip van at Arnarstapi. Let’s face it, if your stomach’s rumbling it’s game over on the photography front. Hunger is a big distraction when you’re trying to take epic photos. And now, a few minutes later after a spell in gastronomy heaven, here we were, pulled in at that patch of scrub and gazing at another epic vista, filled with more of those moss covered lava flows. And a handsome blue roofed building. And some other interesting stuff, I hope you’ll agree.

It was another Super Saturday moment, grabbed in a five minute roadside stop in the grand space between Arnarstapi and Budir. Well maybe a ten minute stop for a second layer to complete the twelve exposures for this handheld panoramic view that filled the space, tailing off into a hinterland of mountains rising from the red sands of the Snaefellsnes south coast under a huge gathering of heavy clouds that promised so much, and later delivered even more. It seems that wherever you stop - when you can stop - the chances are there will be something to fill the viewfinder with. Something that you perhaps didn’t see in a million other images when you planned your own adventures. Just like so many others, I love visiting the hotspots and trying to grab those memorable moments and record them forever. That’s what we were doing for most of our two weeks here, but I also find satisfaction in those impromptu moments when I see something else. And this is definitely an image I’d urge you to look at on the big screen if you can. “Best viewed large,” I sometimes read as I enjoy your stories. And you’re always right of course.

Continuing the theme of exploring more rural scenes in Dorset, I planned a trip yesterday morning as all the indications were for mist lingering in the morning. Unfortunately, on arriving at my intended location there was no mist and so I quickly diverted to a place I'd only recently discovered. There was a burst of wonderful early colour, followed soon after by some nice, brooding clouds. I hope you like what I captured.

A common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) was patiently planning for the dive from the top of a wetland sitting on a twig with sharp looks. Moments later he met the success - a fish catch. It looked very colourful under the morning Sun. I was chasing its actions for quite sometimes and in this rare occasion it accepted my close presence and hence the result. Pics was taken from river sides of the Ganges in Burdwan, West Bengal, India.

Archaic Doric style, the temple of Hercules is the oldest on the site, it dates back to the end of the sixth century BC.

8 of its 38 columns were raised during the first half of the 20th century.

The temple of Heracles is located near the road, east of the park, near the entrance, right next to gate IV (porta Aurea). The identification of this temple dedicated to Heracles is given by Cicero himself, quaestor in Sicily in the year -75. In his famous accusations against Verrès, he evokes a large bronze statue of Heracles, in a temple located near the agora (lower agora, near door IV): his lips and chin were worn, he says, by dint of being touched by the pilgrims, and Verrès planned to seize it. According to Biagio Pace, it may have been dedicated to the Letoids.

The temple of Heracles is the oldest of all those near the southern wall, dating back to the early 5th century BC. It rests on a three-degree base. Its plan conforms to that of most of the temples in Sicily. Its peristyle of 6 × 15 columns is however more elongated than usual, which made it possible to spare at the ends a space equal to the width of two columns, as well in front of the pronaos as behind the opisthodome. Also missing the adyton, usual in the temples of Sicily. The architrave elements show U-shaped siding grooves, intended to pass symmetrical skidding loops.

Debris from the temple of Heracles was found scattered throughout the area, for example capitals covered with stucco, as many other elements of the temple must have been. The eight columns visible on the south side were reassembled in 1924 at the instigation of Alexander Hardcastle, while the whole of the north side was reassembled in the 19th century. A transformation in Roman times and the discovery of a statue of Asclepius in 1835 suggests a new attribution.

We visited a local waterfall that we haven't been to in a few years and I was hoping to get down the cliff for a lower level view. However, looking at the sketchy rope and muddy slope, common sense prevailed and instead, I looked at this Bublet Fern on the cliff edge. The sunlight above was slowly creeping through the tree branches until it reached the fern. I was hoping to use a slow shutter to soften the falls in the background but the breeze created by the falling water kept blowing the fern around. Plan B was to use a faster shutter and focus on the light.

Went hiking around Mt Rainier yesterday with my wife to see the bountiful wildflowers that are really out in abundance. We found a good meadow with a view of the Mountain, or a least a view of where it would be if not for the clouds. We hung out and fed the mosquitos for a couple hours and then the sun sunk over the ridge and it started to get cold and the mountain was nowhere to be found, so we decided to hit up plan B... Hike back to the car and maybe if the mountain came out hit the sunset at lake Tipsoo. Five minutes from the car the mountain just peaked out and the color hit and I got this shot. My previous post was from this same spot just a little over a month earlier and as you can see the terrain is very different, the snow has been replaced with meadow grasses and mosquitos... Plan B turned out, but this would have looked sweet with some wildflowers... I guess it's just an excuse to go back :)

Have a great week ahead and as always thanks for taking the time to stop by and check out my stream.

If I do recall it correctly, the plan X 186 was used for a Stichting KLOK excursion. Soon after this picture, it would go to Goes (NL).

[Anyone have tickets for the Aum festival???] Headed up to the North Island of New Zealand for new years and more adventures! There are actually so many festivals going on, I can't choose which one to go to next! The last solstice one really wore me out... got sunburned and not a lot of sleep. Now fully recovered... Anyway, here is a photo I took about six months ago up here on the north island near Gisborne. That's @Monniloves (on Insta) in the photo... gives it a nice sense of scale because it's hard to tell how vast some of these landscapes are... Another quite cool thing about NZ is you can pretty much go anywhere to take photos. Even random farms... you can just go up and ask and they've said yes 100% of the time. They are sometimes confused why you would want to wander around their farm taking photos and harassing the sheep, but that's okay too.
