April 2012 - All of us go on work placements we have organised during the Easter break. For my first two weeks, I went to Food magazine, a regional mag covering all the foodie delights of the South West. This is the view of their offices in Barnstaple, Devon from my desk. Oakham United FC were formed in 2011 upon the merger of Oakham Imperial FC and Rutland Rangers FC. The Imps dated from the 1940s and Rangers from 1996. In 2015, United stepped up to the United Counties League from the Peterborough & District League after topping the latter's Premier Division. Neither Imperial nor Rangers played on anything other than school pitches in Oakham. The 2015 opening of Sterling Meadows, on land in Barleythorpe adjacent to Rutland County College, gave United the facilities required to secure promotion to the United Counties League.

The island in the photo is actually man-made and one of six that was constructed in 1853 to house naval gun batteries to protect the city of Tokyo (called Edo back then) from foreign attack. Originally 11 such batteries were planned. At the time, war was a very realistic option in case discussions with Commodore Matthew C. Perry of the US Navy failed. Perry threatened to use force if Japan didn't agree to open itself up to the outside world. Egawa Hidetatsu was the Shogunal official responsible for their design and contsruction.

I placed the new photo on the wall below the Illuminated Manuscript (First page of Genesis) and Calligraphy of Luke 11:9 by Mike Podesta. I made the crucifix.
For this photo I used the principal design of contrast between the dark wood and light wood. Rhythm was also used because of the repeated different lines dark lines in the light wood. One thing I think I did well was using the rule of thirds properly instead of completely centering the objects. One thing I believe I could do better on is trying to get rid of the faint blue line reflecting off the glass.
Here we are testing for the placement of a circular window that will be formed from this steel barrel cut in half to make two windows.
Boulders are being picked carefully for placement to both protect a poured wall and get between concrete and a viewer. Yes, we spend more time than you'd think picking boulders that fit nicely and look like they are supposed to be there!
The banner is rolled out on the ground in line with the pick up point.The Shuttleworth Super Cub is used to tow a banner to advertise the airshows. Many thanks for allowing me to photograph how it's done!

Para alcançar as características desejadas para cada produto, são especificados o tipo de fita, concentração de fibras e resina que serão depositadas em camadas (lâminas) para dar a espessura e resistência desejadas. A equipe do Laboratório de Estruturas Leves - LEL do IPT realizou treinamento para operar a Fiber Placement, em Ohio, Estados Unidos, e poderá aplicar essa tecnologia e propor soluções de engenharia para a indústria, em parceria com universidades, no segundo semestre de 2012, quando o LEL estiver totalmente implantado.

These stickers will be replaced with custom water-slide decals. The sticker look grey in the photo, but that is due to the flash. Under normal lighting, they blend well enough with the black brick.

I am not getting online much these days! I moved to another busy placement... but I'll try! One event I could not miss under any circumstances was my mothers recent 60th birthday. We thought it would be good fun if we presented her with a gift hamper (still very popular in Eastern Germany!) with the following essential items:
Olive Oil (there never is any when I visit home)
balsamic vinegar (ditto)
real bean coffee (a hangover form the Socialist days when coffee was a real delicacy)
whipped cream in an aerosol can (ditto)
condensed milk (my mother always laments she forgot to buy it)
spaghetti ( staple food and, unlike the ones in the cupboard at home, still in date)
and a chopping board to remind my mother of the good truth above.
Unfortunately, she did not appear the slightest bit put off by our weird gift, and the hoard of Shiseido hidden under the red paper would have remained just there.
