The 9th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party took place in Madison Square Park June 11-12, 2011. The weekend-long event occurs every June and brings together the country’s top pitmasters who cook up their award-winning food for over a 100,000 barbecue enthusiasts.

 

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Madison Square Park, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party attracts people from near and far to sustain and celebrate America’s authentic culinary and musical traditions.

Hometown Bar-B-Que, at 454 Van Brunt Street, was opened following a year of Hurricane Sandy influenced delays in September 2013 by pitmaster Billy Durney. Hometown quickly earned a reputation as one of the city's best barbecue joints, specializing in authentic, pit-smoked meats.

  

Fatty Cue, at 91 South 6th Street, was opened in 2010 by Zakary Pelaccio. Pelaccio, the chef and restaurateur behind the Malaysian restaurant, Fatty Crab, recruited Queens born pitmaster Robbie Richter, who helped start Hill country in 2007, to launch his Asian-inspired barbecue joint.

“Winningest Man in BBQ” - Myron Mixon teams up with Travel Channel host Adam Richman on moment-filled USO Holiday Tour to South Korea.

 

The duo makes “every moment count” with troops by visiting seven military bases and touring multiple worksites During their Week-Long Visit to the Pacific December 3 - 8. In the region to help bring troops and their families a taste of home and continue the USO’s delivery of special moments this holiday season.

Bobo, led by pitmaster Patrick Connolly, served up a Grilled Bacon Sandwich with Pickled Green Tomatoes, Napa Cabbage and Fat Baby Mayonnaise.

 

Meatopia: BBQ NYC was co-hosted by James Beard Award winning food writer Josh Ozersky along with Taste of Tribeca Co-Chair and Good Beer Month Founder Jimmy Carbone on Governor's Island on July 11, 2010. The festival featured a select group of 26 top chefs and competition BBQ teams cooking sustainable meals using ingredients from local farms. A portion of the proceeds went to Just Food and Slow Food NYC.

Blood bros BBQ is in Bellaire. The classic meats and sides are present, while some of their dishes have Asian twists, reflecting the pitmaster's Vietnamese roots. In addition to the Thai ribs and green curry boudin, there is the brisket fried rice and turkey banh mi.

 

I first read about the restaurant in the NY Times. During my last trip back to Houston in May, I checked it out on one of the days that I helped my parents move. They had almost run out of most items during that visit. This time, I went before it had opened and had to stand in a short line. I went on a Friday when the peanut butter ribs were offered.

Mac was in New York on 9/11. He left the city days later to return to his hometown of Houston. After a year and a half of cooking his way south one job at a time, he ended up in Jackson, TN, where he has been selling barbecue ever since.
