At the bottom of the filter bed for the new fosse septique (septic tank) goes a series of 100mm slotted pipes which are connected to the upright collection chamber.
On top of the pipes is a layer of fabric to prevent the coarse sand used in the filter bed from blocking up the pipework.

This is the largest of the unexpected underground structures found at the bottom of the Mound in the path of new tram rails. The semicircular arched roof has been removed and the interior cleared to reveal this ancient complex of steel pipework. The arched roof, and possibly some of the pipework, ran uncomfortably close in height to the bottom of the foundation concrete bed for the tram rails, possibly too high to accommodate it. An earlier photograph with the arched roof in place can be seen here.
At the top right corner the indistinct yellow jacketed figure is using a high precision Trimble GPS and laser position and level measuring device to check the exact topography. A closer view of that can be seen here.
