September 13, 2019 - This morning we are touring Gold Dredge 8 a National Historic Monument and also learn about the Trans Alaska Pipeline.

"MISSION: Provide safe, environmentally responsible, reliable and cost-effective oil pipeline transportation from the North Slope of Alaska.

VISION: Alaska’s pipeline to the future: Safely delivering oil today – sustaining operations for tomorrow.

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company formed in 1970 to design, build, maintain and operate the Trans Alaska Pipeline System. The pipeline today is recognized as a landmark engineering feat and remains essential to Alaska’s economy and central to the state’s industry. In 1997, Alyeska celebrated the 40th anniversary of operating TAPS.

Focused on safe and flawless operations and sustainability, Alyeska today is working to respond to the challenges posed by declining throughput. Throughput peaked at 2.1 million barrels a day in 1988. It has only steadily decreased since. In 2017, Alyeska moved 527,323 barrels per day on average; in 2018, daily average dropped to 509,315. With the lower flow levels, the crude oil takes longer to reach the Valdez Terminal – about 2 weeks, on average – and the oil is colder on arrival. The slower, colder oil has more potential for water and wax to settle and drop out, and as throughput declines further, the potential for ice to form during shutdown or flowing conditions increases. Alyeska released a low flower overflow updated in 2018 and continues making and researching modifications to respond to lower throughputs." Text from the following website: www.alyeska-pipe.com

it was kind of choppy that day, but I had to get at least one surfer picture

The Banzai Pipeline, or simply "Pipeline" or "Pipe," is a surf reef break located in Hawaii, off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on O'ahu's North Shore. A reef break is an area in the ocean where waves start to break once they reach the shallows of a reef. Pipeline is notorious for huge waves which break in shallow water just above a sharp and cavernous reef, forming large, hollow, thick curls of water that surfers can tube ride. There are three reefs at Pipeline in progressively deeper water further out to sea that activate according to the increasing size of approaching ocean swells.

Landscape CO2 Pipeline

This beautiful portrait of a 10 mile long landscape was taken early this spring. The winding red gravel county road gives you a sense of access but this is big country. There are many two track ‘roads’ through out this remote backcountry. Literally thousands of miles of travel between the fences separating pastures several square miles in area. Open a fence and keep going. Making sure you close it behind you if it was closed to start with.

Off in the distance is a linear feature in the landscape. Manmade. That is a trace of a CO2 Sequestration line. It was laid near here a decade ago. Excess CO2 is from Wyoming being used to inject back into the periphery of a big local oil field. The peripherally injected CO2 pressures the oil to migrate to the center of the oil field where wells pick up the oil. Then the CO2 is just left in place permanently sequestered deep underground. It sounds like a great idea on many levels but there are of course issues that are not for this forum.

That linear scar is hundreds of miles long across Wyoming and Montana. It was an invasive process for any local having HUGE equipment and crew daily for a month or so interrupting normal ranch operation. Lots of traffic for the duration of the project. Having said all that, the vegetation is well maintained by the company several times a year killing off noxious weeds that take over freshly disturbed ground. That is a 36 inch high pressure line. A lot of CO2 from the oil wells, natural gas wells and coal scrubbing gets put in there never to be seen again.
