Hiking along Hidden Pinion Trail.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you again for your visit and support!
The rock formations, scrub brush, cactus, and gnarled pinion pine and juniper trees of the Southwest United States invoke the spirit of the pre-historic continent that we call North America moreso than nearly anywhere else.
There are vast expanses of scant population, and even in tourist areas like Sedona, the nature takes precedence. When I looked at this image in color, it was nice, but when I converted it to monochrome, it drew out that spirit for me.
Do you agree?

youtu.be/Im4D0cBttco On July 2019, NMR celebrated the 14th anniversary of its induction as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Now, along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, NMR is also part of the heritage ‘Mountain Railways of India’.
NMR has more than a few distinctions. On its 46 km journey, the little blue train climbs from 325 m to 2,240 m, negotiating along the way the steepest gradient of any railway line in South Asia. It does this with its rack and pinion system - it is the only rack railway in India - where cog wheels mesh with a toothed rack rail to ease the climb.
NMR uses one of the world’s oldest engines, 'X' Class steam rack locomotives, manufactured by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of Winterthur in Switzerland, on the rack and pinion section of its tracks.
When this railway was completed in 1908, the last stop was the hill town of Coonoor. The line was later extended to Ooty (Udhagamandalam). It now passes through 13 stations: Mettupalayam, Kallar (now closed for passengers), Adderley, Hillgrove, Runnymede, Katteri, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti, Lovedale, Fernhill and Ooty.
These train journeys offer some of the best experiences as they chug on routes that have been carved through mountains and beautiful valleys.
The train leaves Mettupalayam at 7.10 each morning, switches from a steam to a diesel engine at Coonoor station, and chugs into Ooty at noon. [ Courtesy :- The Hindu News ]
Nilgiri Mountain Railways (NMR) is a popular tourist attraction, this meter-gauge rail is also called as Toy Train.

Was burning a Pinion incense for the cold day affect. This smoke shot came out a nose sniffing up the aroma. Added some texture and light for this Sunday slide, using the Nikon Coolpix B700.
Steam locomotives and a rack and pinion.
Definition: of Rack & Pinion.
A gear rack has straight teeth cut into one surface of a square or round section of rod
and operates with a pinion, which is a small
cylindrical gear meshing with the gear rack.
Llanberis is a village, community and electoral ward in Gwynedd, northwest Wales, on the southern bank of the lake Llyn Padarn and at the foot of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales.
So we descended on foot from the Stöckli to Andermatt, a steep descent that didn't allow stops for photos, as we needed to catch the Glacier Express in Andermatt.
The Glacier Express bridges the height difference of more than 600 metres between Andermatt (1447m) and the Oberalppass at 2048m in no time at all thanks to the rack-and-pinion mechanism. This ride is considered one of the two most scenic train journeys in Switzerland.
I took this photo from the train.

This is the only rack and pinion railway in the United Kingdom, and it starts from Llanberis terminus to the summit of yr wyddfa.

A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a circular gear (the pinion) engaging a linear gear (the rack). Together, they convert between rotational motion and linear motion: rotating the pinion causes the rack to be driven in a line. Conversely, moving the rack linearly will cause the pinion to rotate.

This Pentax bellows set was purchased in Thailand while I was stationed there in 1972 (USAF). At some point in the early 80’s a friend milled out the Pentax screw threads and machined a Nikon bayonet mount into what was left. He used an indexing rotary table on a Bridgeport vertical mill (a really talented guy).
I have been using it on occasion for over 50 years. The Spotmatic II that I bought it for lasted about 7 or 8 years.
The frame is 1.5 inches wide.
This is rack and pinion gearing is on my Toyo 5x4 view camera. These are found on each end of the camera. The plastic knob turns to drive the gear, in turn moving the front or rear standards vertically. The standards also tilt and turn left and right. It's a thing of great marvel. Using this machine takes significant time, so it has seen very little use since I acquired it. I have just arrived on a trip to England with the camera in the car... a couple of autumn days in which I am determined to use it. My arms may be longer by the time I have lugged it anywhere, but who cares?

Look at the pinion pines in upper left for scale. I'm about 1000 feet above the base of the dunes, which rise more than 600 feet.

Here the Snowdon Mountain Railway is about to arrive at the summit of Snowdon. The Llanberis Path/ Pyg Track runs beside it at this point.
There is one carriage, pushed by a locomotive. It uses the rack-and-pinion system: the rack are the teeth between the rails and the cog is on the locomotive.
In the distance to the right, you can see Llanberis and Llyn Padarn. And to the left, Caernarfon Bay and the Irish Sea!
By train or on foot? As I said before, there was no choice for us: the train was fully booked weeks ahead and you couldn't return on it unless you had booked ... In the end I was very happy that I did it all on foot.
