Valun is a highly photogenic hamlet, a cluster of old stone houses climbing up the hill from the harbour. Around the harbour are some good cafes and restaurants where one can sit and watch the infrequent comings and goings on the town quay. The small parish church of Valun displays an 11th tombstone inscribed in Glagolitic as well as Latin, one of the earliest examples in Croatia. On either side of the hamlet are some idyllic beaches, fringed with pines.

Pine Siskins are one of the winter finches we often see. I haven't had any in my yard this year, but I have seen them in the area. -•••-

Picture of Ponderosa Pines with Ponderosa Pine branches as the frame. In the Sierra Nevada foothills. (Despite the title, and while these pine trees are in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, they are not "Foothill Pines." "Foothill Pines" are better known as "Digger Pines," which our area of the county is infested.)

Ten days ago, I got some redpolls at this feeder. Today I got a nice picture of a Pine Siskin.

I like this feeder. Thanks, Jeff for putting this baby up!
