The white Bengal tigers are distinctive due to the color of their fur. The white fur caused by a lack of the pigment pheomelanin, which is found in Bengal tigers with orange color fur. When compared to Bengal tigers, the white Bengal tigers tend to grow faster and heavier than the orange Bengal tiger. They also tend to be somewhat bigger at birth, and as fully grown adults. White Bengal tigers are fully grown when they are 2–3 years of age. White male tigers reach weights of 200 to 230 kilograms and can grow up to 3 meters in length. As with all tigers, the white Bengal tiger’s stripes are like fingerprints, with no two tigers having the same pattern. The stripes of the tiger are a pigmentation of the skin; if an individual were to be shaved, its distinctive coat pattern would still be visible.[2] For a white Bengal tiger to be born, both parents must carry the unusual gene for white colouring, which only happens naturally about once in 10,000 births.[2] Dark-striped white individuals are well-documented in the Bengal tiger subspecies (Panthera tigris tigris or P. t. bengalensis) as well as having been reported historically in several other subspecies.[2] Currently, several hundred white tigers are in captivity worldwide, with about one hundred being found in India. Their unique white color fur has made them popular in entertainment showcasing exotic animals, and at zoos

Presley Tuggle, 5, from Saltville, VA grabs an Audible Egg during the egg hunt in Abingdon, Virginia on Saturday. Tuggle has Ocular albinism a genetic condition that primarily affects the eyes. This condition reduces the coloring (pigmentation) of the iris, which is the colored part of the eye, and the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The egg she has collected has a switch to turn off the beep.

Young flower showing dark sepal underside, but light upper side which matches petal pigmentation. Two locules of anther splitting by longitudinal slits. Note the three stigmays are kept clear of the anthers, reducing chance of self pollination. The stigmata are capitate (shaped like a head) to truncate (squared off). Pollen is heavy and sculpted ... not designed for wind dispersal, and yellow.

White Kangaroos are a rare but beautiful phenomenon and may result from either albinism — a genetic mutation causing total lack of pigmentation to the hair, eyes and skin — or leucism, a fault in the pigment cells that may cause white fur, but usually the skin and eyes are unaffected. Albino kangaroos can also be mistaken for whites which are a genetic strain of the western grey. True albinos are unable to produce any kind of pigment, hence their white coloration and pink eyes: Blood vessels normally masked by eye color show through. Albinism is a recessive trait, meaning both parents must pass the mutation on to their offspring / While on our way to Phillip Island we make a stop at Maru Animal Park, a family run attraction that includes an Animal Park featuring Koalas and other animals native to Australia, located on the Bass Highway in Grantville in southern Victoria.

Lots of Shadow Darners out after our short cold spell. The yellow form is caused by pigmentation produced by the female that masks the normal blue all mosaics have. The theory is that the unusual colour confuses aggressive males and lets the female mature without constant harassment.

Morpho butterflies (genus Morpho – about 80 species) are forest dwellers that venture into sunny clearings to warm themselves. They are neotropical species found mostly in South America as well as Mexico and Central America. Morphos range in wingspan from the 7.5 cm (3 inch) M. rhodopteron to the imposing 20 cm (8 inch)

Sunset Morpho, M. hecuba. The name morpho, means change, modification or form, and is also an epithet of Aphrodite and Venus. Most species are colored in metallic, shimmering shades of blue, purple and green. These colors are not a result of pigmentation but are an example of iridescence derived from structural components: the microscopic scales covering the wings

reflect incident light repeatedly at successive layers, leading to interference. Thus the colors produced vary with the viewing angle. This structure may be likened to a photonic crystal. The lamellate structure of their wing scales has been studied as a model in the development of fabrics, dye‐free paints, and anti‐counterfeit technology used in currency. The iridescent lamellae are only present on the dorsal side of their wings, leaving the ventral side brown. In most species

only the males are colorful and males are highly territorial. The lamellae reflect up to 70% of light falling on them, including any ultraviolet (UV). The eyes are thought to be highly sensitive to UV light and therefore the males are able to see each other from great distances. The ventral side is decorated with numerous ocelli or eyespots.

this is a photo that i took a few weeks ago on the west mountain. this doe is a partial leucistic deer (by definition, leucism (a.k.a. achromia) is a state of reduced pigmentation that can occur in individuals of almost all species of animals. the animals skin may appear pink, its fur anywhere from beige to blond to pure white. however leucistic animals have normally colored eyes. leucism is produced by the expression of a single recessive gene. partial expression of leucism can lead to an animal having a pied or spotted appearance. by contrast albinism if a complete lack of pigmentation).

First day out this year looking for springtails. "Golden" Sminthurinus varieties very much in evidence, some more easy to ID than others. Here's my suggestions:

1. Sminthurinus aureus - non-feeding instar.

2. Sminthurinus aureus/reticulatus - feeding instar (see notes below).

3. Sminthurinus reticulatus - non-feeding instar.

4. Sminthurinus reticulatus - non-feeding instar.

Frans Janssens cautions me about making too many assumptions about colour (which is affected by maturity, levels of pigmentation and colour of gut contents) but it seems that some S. reticulatus individuals have what I describe as a "marmalade" colouration (example 3) and others a more olive-green hue (example 4).

I'm also thinking that in feeding instars of S. reticulatus, the bands of pigmentation may be obscured by the colour of the gut contents showing through the cuticle (as is happening with example 2). This would make its differentiation from S. aureus more difficult. I've taken lots of photographs of "golden" Sminthurinus but don't seem to have encountered any feeding instars of S. reticulatus yet!

I've been looking at lots of images of Sminthurinus aureus and reticulatus to see if there are features other than the transverse stripes and posterior "Y"-shaped areas of pigmentation that could be used to differentiate them. I've noticed that lots of S. reticulatus have a tri-lobed "splash" of pigmentation on the rear/lateral area of the abdomen that is not apparent on S. aureus (see exampels 2 and 4 above) and is not obscured by the colour of the gut contents. Perhaps example 2 is S. reticulatus with the banding obscured and not S. aureus??
