Don't usually photograph pigeons but pigeon 1 & 2 impressed us as so colorful and photogenic that we couldn't resist.

Common Wood Pigeon

The common wood pigeon is a large species in the dove and pigeon family. It belongs to the Columba genus and, like all pigeons and doves, belongs to the family Columbidae.

Pigeon at Green Cay

I spent a lovely couple of hours at the zoo today. As usual I started my zoo visit in the aviary as the birds are more active in the morning than later during the day. The bird in this shot is an African olive pigeon. I love pigeons and this one is a pleasure to photograph as the distinctive yellow ring around the eye makes it quite easy to focus.

Ha! They might work for a bit until the birds get used to them and see they never move. I see pigeons and other birds sitting right next to them all the time. Sometimes right on top of them. They're dumb, but not that dumb.

Taubental (Güvercinlik Vadisi)

Am Ortsrand von Uçhisar führt ein Weg hinunter ins Taubental (Güverçin Vadisi). Durch ein grünes Tal, neben einem kleinen, aber schmutzigen Bach, wandern wir zwischen Tuff-Felswänden entlang. Überall sind Höhlen mit Fluglöchern für die Tauben. Manche sind auch hübsch bemalt. Immer wieder entdecken wir neue Ausblicke und Fotomotive.

On the outskirts of Uçhisar a path leads down into the Pigeon Valley (Güverçin Vadisi). Through a green valley, next to a small but dirty stream, we walk along tuff cliffs. Everywhere are caves with holes for the pigeons. Some are also pretty painted. Again and again we discover new views and photo opportunities.

This bird is found from the Nicobar Islands (India) to the western Pacific. Although it spends most of its time on the ground it is a strong flyer. Nicobar pigeons are monogamous with pairs mating for life. It is the closest relative to the extinct Dodo bird.
