A couple of times a year during the winter a barge loaded with lumber arrives in Seward and is railed up to Anchorage for SBS, Spenard Builders Supply. ARR 4007 leads a train laden with lumber over the top of the 3% grade at Divide. In the far distance is Resurrection Bay
Piercing the Shadows
I know this is a bit of an unconventional "train" photo but I do hope some of you appreciate it.
One of the prettiest roads you might ever drive on is Winona Road the reaches through parts of Belknap and Grafton Counties in the great state of New Hampshire.
It is the scenic route between the communities of Meredith and Ashland and roughly parallels the old Concord and Montreal Railroad, later B&M's White Mountain Division Mainline. Now largely devoid of trains, these rails see no more than a dozen or two movements a year. But each fall for four weekends the Winnipesaukee Scenic runs foliage specials north from Meredith to Plymouth.
Here is one of those returning on a warm Sunday afternoon approaching the sunshine where the tracks cross over Winona Road on a narrow bridge at Milepost 41 (from Concord) on these lonely rails now owned by the state.

Southern ground hornbills are carnivorous and mostly hunt on the ground, where they find the majority of their food. This food ranges from insects to small animals. Their nests are often found in high in tree cavities or other shallow cavities, such as rock holes in cliff faces. These birds are a long-lived species, having lifespans in the range of 50–60 years, and up to 70 in captivity. In relation to their long lives, they do not reach sexual maturity until 4–6 years old and begin breeding around 10 years old. Their sex can be identified by the colour of their throats, where the males are pure red and the females are a deep violet-blue.

During one of the last regular coal turns from Tower colliery to Aberthaw power station, an unidentified freightliner class 66 makes its way south past Devils Bridge at Trefforest, south Wales.
Unfortunately, the regular coal runs seem to have ceased with only occasional DBC trains being the last remaining freight traffic on this line.
Vultures are odd and weird looking creatures, but I always get fascinated by their appearance...
The characteristic bald head, devoid of feathers....Those piercing eyes....almost pretty! (grin)

Thor doesn’t get nearly as much attention from this vantage point as it does from the north. That’s a shame, because this viewpoint is absolutely stunning. This was from a longer day of walking where we happened to find ourselves on a tall moraine while passing light just lit and darkened the dramatic mountain’s face, over and over. Such an incredible place.
