I just had to turn down a semi-local speaking gig for a library association's conference because their ceiling for reimbursements &c was not going to cover my travel/lodging costs.
Their explanation was that "as a (locality) librarian..." I should be doing this sort of thing as a service to my locale. I understand this justification. I do speak for free at ALA and VLA when they ask me, as well as a few other events like Computers in Libraries. I speak cheaply for student groups though none of them has asked me to speak for free in years.
Just for fun, I figured I'd do the math and figure out what is actually paying me and what fraction of that is librarianing. This is pre-tax income (public speaking numbers are a little inflated because in some cases my check includes reimbursements and I haven't split it all out) for 2008. The notes show you where my money comes from.
Because rail uses energy more efficiently and can run on renewable electricity, a transportation strategy that aims at deep carbon reductions will seek to divert freight and passengers to rail where possible. (Following sections line out these opportuni- ties.) Today, rail locomotives are responsible for two percent of US transportation GHGs, while trucks account for another 23%.54 Aviation emits eight percent of US transportation GHGs, while light-duty vehicles constitute a 60% share.55 By improving service speed and reliability, rail electrification and modernization makes possible a broader shift in transportation modes. Moving a substantial portion of truck freight to rail powered with renewable electricity would yield significant carbon reductions, as would moving passengers to electrified rail on intercity journeys.
“Electric trains generally perform better than equivalent diesel vehicles even on the basis of the current electricity generation mix,” the U.K. Department for Transport reports. “Typically, an electric train emits 20–35% less carbon per passenger mile than a diesel train. This advantage will increase over time as our power generation mix becomes less carbon intensive.”56 Compared to cars, electric trains produce 60% lower carbon emissions per passenger mile, and over four times less carbon than the equivalent miles of air travel.57
Long-haul trucks might be electrified in thefuture. A system using overhead wires strung abovea highway is being tested on a two-kilometer stretchnorth of Stockholm. Another test is planned for 2017around the Los Angeles–Long Beach Harbor com-plex. The system is designed for use with diesel-hybrid trucks made by Scania. A halving of energyuse is claimed.58 While this is a step in the right direction, where freight can move by rail, it will retain significant advantages. Investment costs to install the highway sys- tem will likely be in the same range as rail electrification. But rail will move freight 1.9 to 5.5 times more efficiently, and with far lower overall labor costs. Electrified trucking will also not reduce the disproportionate amount of highway wear-and-tear caused by trucks, nor the highway congestion that results from over-reliance on truck shipping.
For long-haul mobility that dramatically reduces carbon emissions, electrified rail powered by renewable electricity stands out as a critically important option. The rail- road, the oldest form of mechanized mass transportation, is one key to addressing the toughest carbon emissions reduction challenge of the 21st century, oil replacement.

My 6th graders will be taking data they collected in Math and instead of plugging the numbers into Excel (they've already done that) we'll be working on making 3D models of their charts.
To be honest, it's really not that hard to do.

Based on pie charts derived from Gallup.com polls, Scott Hug has translated a selection of surveys into large-scale paintings and small collages of Color-aid pie charts. Initially developed in 1948 as a backdrop for photographers, Color-aid was soon thereafter discovered by teacher-artist Josef Albers, informing his seminal textbook “Interaction of Color” (1975). Color-aid has since served as a traditional guide and teaching aid for modernist color theory. Hug’s act of superimposing charts over iconic images from National Geographic (whose tagline is “Inspiring people to care about the planet since 1888”) highlights modern society’s increasing distance from the natural world and the ubiquity of data removed from its original context. Critically examining the extent to which we rely on abstract interpretations of data and imagery to construct our understanding of the world and inform personal experience, Hug underscores the divide between people, nature and culture.

Yesterday David Butler bought the first year fine art students from Newcastle University to see the studios... As the Studio Development Artist I gave an informal talk about the development of Waygood Gallery and Studios and a tour around the harkers building.
This pie chart was generated in response to the question by one of the Newcastle University students that asked,
"What is the percentage ratio of male to female artists in the studios?"
I had inadvertantly given the impression that Waygood is a male dominated space by refering to a number of male studio holder before mentioning a single female artist.
This was not intended and does not reflect the true situation.
From the list of current studioholders it shows that there are 22 male artists and
27 female artists.
This is the first time I have looked at the list of studioholders in this way.
As I am sure everyone here already knows, Waygood's founding Creative Director
and artist is Helen Smith. The Chair of the Waygood Board and the majority of the rest
of the Board are also female.
At Waygood inclusion and diversity is taken seriously.
The current range of studioholders may not reflect the full range of diversity of ethnicity or disability in society but this is a complex question to resolve which needs to be approched with care.
I do consider this area of discussion to fall within my remit as the Studio Development Artist. I do already attend meetings where these matters are being discussed.
I hope you can appreciate that it will take some time before a policy can be stated.
To make the pie charts I took advantage of Inkscape's internal extensions to SVG, specifically with regard to the definition of arcs. I created a basic template pie chart with three wedges in Inkscape, saved it as an SVG, then opened it my text editor. I replaced the values that would change with strings that would be unique and easy to find and in a regular expression search. For example, I put "##EASB##" where the value would be "End A Start B".

Today is the birthday of Florence Nightingale. “The Lady with the Lamp” as she was called during the Crimean War, was a pioneering nurse, developer of the “Pie Chart” and all round good egg.
Although it must be said that she didn’t invent the actual “Pie Chart” as depicted here, but a form of pie chart called “polar area chart”, a useful tool to show where polar bears were currently looking for beans, if the prop department has done it's research correctly (somewhat doubtful to be honest).
So happy birthday Mrs Nightingale and thanks for all the pies :-)
