My first mince pie of the season – I was on the winning team at a quiz last week and I got half a dozen mince pies as a prize.
My daughter gave me the plate at Christmas several years ago.

This is Pie, a neighborhood kitty. He likes to spend his mornings hunting for mice at the creek. I like to spend my mornings looking for birds at the creek, so our paths often cross. He is a sweetie Pie:)
Cake is so overrated. We're all about pie around here. This one was for my friend Paulo's birthday on Friday.
Stargazy pie (sometimes called starrey gazey pie or other variants) is a Cornish dish made of baked pilchards, along with eggs and potatoes, covered with a pastry crust. Although there are a few variations with different fish being used, the unique feature of stargazy pie is fish heads (and sometimes tails) protruding through the crust, so that they appear to be gazing skyward. This allows the oils released during cooking to flow back into the pie.
The dish is traditionally held to have originated from the village of Mousehole in Cornwall and is traditionally eaten during the festival of Tom Bawcock's Eve to celebrate his heroic catch during a very stormy winter. According to the modern festival, which is combined with the Mousehole village illuminations, the entire catch was baked into a huge stargazy pie, encompassing seven types of fish and saving the village from starvation. The story of Bawcock was popularised by Antonia Barber's children's book The Mousehole Cat, which featured the star-gazy pie.
Last night saw the annual gathering of the extended four-generation clan for our traditional Pie Night. Taken on Kim's phone, there was of course Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie and Chocolate Pie supported by Coconut Cream Pie, Lemon Pie, Key Lime Pie, Strawberry and Cherry Pie. In some instances there was more than one of each, all provided by Houston's legendary Flying Saucer Pie Company which just happens to be nearby. Damn fine pies!
By the way, for my family initiation in Houston I was tasked with collecting the pies for Pie Night in 2013. I passed the test! flic.kr/p/hVczC7
I finally ordered a few cutters from Ecrandal. I LOVE them! They have the greatest shapes available.
So this is my first time playing with my new pie cutter! I'm pretty happy with how they came out. The first pie is supposed to be apple...its a little harder to make apple than I thought! Then pumpkin, of course, and chocolate silk pie. :)
Our wagon load of pie pumpkins is buried in snow after we got about a foot of the white stuff. We normally can keep the pumpkin business going until Thanksgiving, but now that everything is frozen it will be time to clean up all the remaining pumpkins & squash.
This pie contains four layers: pie crust brushed with white chocolate, cream cheese filling, lightly cooked strawberry puree, and glazed whole strawberries. The white chocolate keeps the bottom crust crisp and flaky. I loved the combination of the creamy filling with the fresh and cooked strawberries.
The crust is made with flour, salt, baking powder, butter, and buttermilk. The filling is made with cream cheese, white chocolate, and sour cream. The strawberries are cooked with water, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and lemon juice. The fresh berries are glazed with sugar, cornstarch, water, and lemon juice.
Each contestant will attempt to finish the piece of pumpkin pie in front of them the quickest, and they are not allowed to use their hands. The pies were very large, and each piece is a quarter of a pie. Yum! Though I doubt if anyone stopped to savor the flavor. Several firefighters took part, and one was the winner.
In 2016, I used my phone to make a quick pic of this old pie crust recipe. I thought I might try to recapture it with my macro lens. Maybe the old cutting board gives the recipe a little more character!
This is a very nice pie crust recipe. My mother always made her pie crust without a recipe and always had the perfect crust. I could never do that. Mom's sister gave me her no-fail recipe. And I share with you!

We have two big huckleberry bushes in the front garden. They take forever to pick (thank you Fred), so we usually only get one pie each year. And here it is. I added a few blueberries to top up the quantity.
