👎 Rejected

☞ In 2023, the administrator for the Flickr group "The human decisive moment !" rejected this image for NOT depicting a 'decisive moment.'

☞ On 9 September 2024, the administrator for the Flickr group Panasonic Lumix 100-300 Leica 100-400 — missing in action for several years — suddenly returned with a vengeance. Among other actions, they rejected, en masse, TWENTY-THREE of my photographs, all taken with the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300/F4.0-5.6 lens. The tranche was so large that Flickr listed only a dozen of the rejects. This image was one of them.

☞ On 3 June 2025, the administrator for the Flickr group "Three's company / A trois, c'est mieux !" rejected this photo for NOT displaying "three people (human beings) together."

☞ To all three 'administrators,' I say: "Excuse me. Whaaaat?" (Actually, I said something else, but I won't print that here.)

About "The Rising Sun"

☞ "Cercis canadensis —commonly known as the eastern redbud tree— is a large deciduous shrub or small tree in the legume family (Fabaceae), native to eastern North America.

The Rising Sun™ cultivar —Cercis canadensis (JN2)— was discovered in a Belvidere, Tennessee nursery in 2006. Of unknown parentage, it had been planted from collected seed and was growing in a row of nursery seedlings. Unlike the 'standard' Eastern Redbud tree, the Rising Sun grows only 8 to 12 feet tall (2½ - 3½ m) but is drought and heat-tolerant.

☞ Rising Sun's abundant pea-like, rosy pink flowers appear in early spring before the foliage. Its heart-shaped foliage emerges deep golden orange and matures through shades of orange, gold, and yellow to a speckled lime green. New leaves appear throughout the summer, resulting in a continual mix of colors. The fall foliage is yellow and orange."

▶ "In spring, the plant produces large, yellow flowers with 5-fold symmetry. The yellow petals are long and strap-like, and dangle over the umbrella-like style of the flower, which is held upside down at the end of a 20-inch long (50 cm) scape. "Farina": a delightfully delicate 'Kölsch-style' beer brewed by Halfway Crooks Brewery (Atlanta, Georgia).

Here, served on draught (in its own glassware), at...

Brick Store Pub

City of Decatur (Decatur Square), Georgia, USA.

24 May 2025.

***************

About the beer

Halfway Crooks' description:

"Top-fermenting lager brewed with German pilsner malt, hops sourced directly from Seitzfarm in Bavaria, a classic Kölsch yeast, Atlanta water. Notes of white wine, pear, German pilsner malt, floral German hops, and a refreshing dry finish. 4.8% ABV" [alcohol-by-volume]

Craft Beer & Brewing's review:

Light herbal, earthy aromas. Mild bitterness, moderate spicy, earthy hop flavors, then some light white-grape acidity. Subdued soft fruit esters come out in the middle. Nicely balanced sweetness and bitterness.”

***************

About Kölsch

"Kölsch has the pale color of a fine Pilsner but the fruitiness of a fine ale. It is defined by German law as top-warm-fermented and cold-aged, with an alcohol content of 4.4 to 4.9 percent by volume. Also by German law, the beer must be brewed from Pilsner and Vienna malts, but may also contain up to 20% wheat malt. The beer has an aromatic bitterness and noticeable hop character, is well-fermented [like an ale], but is lagered cold for 14-40 days.

Kölsch is properly served — in a tall, narrow, straight-sided 200-ml (6.8 US fl oz) glass about 5 inches (13 cm) tall — at 55 °F (13 °C), with a pale white collar about an inch deep."

Encyclopedia of Beer (1995).

Christine Rhodes, Thomas Bedell, Fred Eckhardt, et al.

▶ "Since 1997, the term 'Kölsch' has had a protected geographical indication (PGI) within the European Union, indicating a beer that is made within 50 km (31 mi) of the city of Cologne (Köln) and brewed according to the Kölsch Konvention as defined by the members of the Cologne Brewery Association (Kölner Brauerei-Verband)."

Wikipedia.

***************

▶ Some breweries outside of Germany attach the moniker, 'Kölsch-style'...although Halfway Crooks pointedly does not!

▶ I couldn't find any information online confirming that the beer contains wheat malt, even though its name — "farina" (a form of milled wheat)— would imply it does.

👎 Rejection.

On 26 December 2024, the administrator for the Flickr group "One Stop Ahead (street/documentary photography collective)" rejected this photo, deeming it of poor quality.

On the contrary, I find it one of my better street images —in terms of composition, color, shapes, lines, and irony— and I am rarely overly pleased by my efforts. So, I 'asked' Chat GPT to analyze the image.

"The composition and photographic quality of this image can be analyzed based on several elements:

COMPOSITION

1. Leading Lines & Framing:

- The yellow "NO PARKING" lines on the ground lead the viewer's eye toward the central subject.

- The walls, dumpster, and sidewalk create a natural frame, guiding attention toward the person standing near a door.

- The image features a mix of muted and strong colors. The red and dark green bricks create an interesting contrast.

- The blue dumpster, with graffiti and signs, adds texture and visual interest.

3. Subject Placement & Balance:

- The person in black with a white cloth stands slightly off-center, following the rule of thirds.

- The right side is heavier with the dumpster, but the human figure balances the visual weight.

4. Depth & Perspective:

- The angle provides a sense of depth with the converging lines of the pavement and walls.

- The background is slightly blurred, keeping focus on the subject.

PHOTOGRAPHIC QUALITY

1. Lighting:

- The lighting is natural and diffused, creating soft shadows.

- There is an atmospheric quality with some areas appearing darker, which enhances the mood.

2. Focus & Sharpness:

- The main subject is well-focused, with enough background detail to provide context.

- The depth of field is moderate, keeping the image visually engaging without distractions.

3. Mood & Storytelling:

- The image has a gritty, urban feel, possibly suggesting a behind-the-scenes moment at a restaurant or workplace.

- The slightly slouched posture of the person adds to the narrative, evoking a sense of fatigue or routine.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

The photograph captures an everyday urban scene with strong composition, color contrast, and a storytelling element. It effectively uses light, texture, and framing to create a compelling image."

Its leaves slowly close during the night and during periods of rain, the leaflets bowing downward; thus its modern Persian name shabkhosb, means 'night sleeper.' In Japan its common names are nemunoki, nemurinoki, and nenenoki which all mean 'sleeping tree.'"

▶ "Originally brought to the U.S. as an ornamental tree, it has escaped gardens and has pushed its way into natural areas that should be preserved for native plants. ▶ "I studied art and business at Georgia State University, but my unorthodox style has developed over many years with numerous influences. Early on, my painting style was influenced by working with mosaics. I use the background color as a negative to build up the foreground positively in order to create a three-dimensional form. As my graphic/ hard edge style has evolved, there has become a strong influence by Pop Art and Fauvism. The influence of Pop Art is seen instantly in my graphic style and my use of everyday, ordinary creatures. You can see Fauvism’s influence with the large plains of bold color that I use and the reduction of colors to a minimum. Also, I am drawn to various paintings by Matisse where he uses intricate patterns on rugs and background designs."

Without a neutral density filter or a tripod to take a long shutter-speed exposure of the waterfall, I employed a field-and-processing technique described by landscape photographer Adam Gibbs (on YouTube).

I braced myself against a tree and snapped six photos in quick succession at a relatively fast shutter speed (1/200 second), trying not to move or shake the camera. Afterward, in post-processing, I aligned and blended the six photos, creating an effect that simulates a long exposure (but only for the creek itself). What fun!

***************

About the mission:

Mission Nombre de Dios (Name of GodMission) is a Catholic mission founded in 1587 in St. Augustine, Florida, on the west side of Matanzas Bay. It is likely the oldest extant mission in the continental United States. The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche, the oldest shrine in that region, is located on the mission grounds.

The mission traces its origins to September 8, 1565, when Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed with a band of settlers, including a Catholic chaplain, Father Francisco López de Mendoza Grajales. The mission would serve the colonists and nearby villages of the Mocama, a Native American tribe.

The 'Great Cross' was dedicated in October 1966 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the mission's founding. It is made of stainless steel and towers 208 feet above the Matanzas marshes. An eleven-foot-tall bronze statue of Father López stands in front, created in 1958 by Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962), a Croatian sculptor (then dean of Art at Notre Dame University, in South Bend, Indiana, USA).
