A shot that's connected to the previous one, albeit taken some 40 years apart - I'm at Manchester's Piccadilly station looking down platform 1 and across to platform 2. These platforms were, until around 30 years ago, electrified on the 1500v DC system to support services to Glossop and Hadfield and, in the 1960s, over the old GCR Woodhead route to Sheffield Victoria.

Times have changed of course with the route now only open as far as Hadfield, and also now electrified at 25Kv ac, consistent with the rest of the West Coast Mainline. But happily some continuity remains because these two platforms still serve the route to Hadfield, and with a frequency of service such that barely has one train left the platform then another one is shortly afterwards due in.

The services are now handled by Northern's class 323s and, captured in the mirror in this selfie, is unit 323226 arriving from Hadfield where it will form my train, the 11.59am return (2G13), which I take as far as Guide Bridge. I quite like the way the shape of the mirror repeats itself in the curve of the overall roof.

Black five 44871 is seen departing Manchester Piccadilly on 9th March 2024with the empty coaching stock for the Stratford Flyer, taking customers from the station to Stratford Upon Avon. The train went into the up and down loop at Longsight and was then towed back in by a class 47

The LT Museums preserved 1938 tube stock approaches Park Royal on another Coronation special run. I needed my steps for this shot as the parapet was just too tall. At this spot the Piccadilly Line crosses over the Central Line. It was my 2nd attempt here as the sun didn't come out to play at the first!

Piccadilly Circus, together with Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, is one of the most famous squares in London. Regardless of the time, it is always pleasantly busy at Piccadilly Circus. It is best known for its huge video screens with advertising and dazzling neon lighting. The square is therefore regularly compared to another famous square with neon signs, Times Square in New York.

Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819 and today the square is a major transport hub, meeting place and busy tourist attraction. The square connects a number of key streets in the West End district, including Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, The Haymarket Coventry street and Glasshouse Street. Due to its central location in the city, Piccadilly Circus is a great starting point for an afternoon of shopping in London.

Piccadilly Circus is a road junction and public space of London's West End in the City of Westminster, built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly. In this context, a circus, from the Latin word meaning "circle", is a round open space at a street junction. Its status as a major traffic junction has made Piccadilly Circus a busy meeting place and a tourist attraction in its own right.

Full of history, neon lights and rushing people, London's Piccadilly shares a lot of similarities with New York's Time Square. Theme: B&W. (2016:10/52)

BR EM2 DC electric loco 27003 ''Diana'' at Manchester Piccadilly station, in around 1963. At that time, the station had 1500v DC and 25Kv AC overhead electric services.

The EM2s were withdrawn from service in 1968, and all were sold to the Netherlands State Railways, but 27005 was dismantled and used for spares for the rest of the class. 27003 became 1501, and the class remained in service there until 1986, fitted with Stone Faiveley type pantographs. 1501 was preserved in the Netherlands, and has now been donated to the Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht.

Two more of the class were repatriated to the UK for preservation..

Piccadilly, London. Another flickr photowalk, organised (expertly as usual by Colin and Darrell), but, even allowing for being a Saturday evening near Xmas, rather too crowded for my taste! Some spectacular lights and scenes, especially along the Piccadilly / Bond Street area
