Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) was a French botanist. He was born to a well-to-do family in Aix-en-Provence. Tournefort initially took up studies in theology. However, as he had a marked inclination towards natural sciences, he turned to medicine. He completed his studies at the University of Montpellier. In 1681, he was in Barcelona doing research in botany. In 1694 Tournefort published his first three-volume work, in which he classified 8846 plants. In 1698 he became Doctor in Medicine of the University of Paris. At that time his treatise was also translated into Latin. Tournefort became a famous physician and naturalist. He travelled extensively in Western Europe (Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, England). He had published a number of works on botany, and had acquired a fabulous collection of nearly 50.000 books, as well as costumes, arms, minerals, shells and various curiosities. Thus, he already had a very important career behind him when Louis XIV entrusted him with the mission to bring new plants to the Royal Botanical Garden.

Tournefort started out on his voyage to the Near East in the spring of 1700, at the age of 44, accompanied by a painter and a doctor. He visited thirty-eight islands of the Greek archipelago, as well as Northern Anatolia, Pontus and Armenia, and reached Tiflis in Georgia. Tournefort returned to Marseilles in June 1702.

His manuscript, composed of his letters to the Minister of the Exterior Count de Pontchartain, was published posthumously in 1717. A number of re-editions followed, while his work was also translated into English, German and Flemish. There is also a Greek translation of the first part. The fact that Tournefort had discovered new plants in his journey led him to publish a supplement to his main work of botanical classification in 1703. He taught Botany in the Académie, while continuing to practice medicine; at the same time, he was in charge of the Royal Gardens, where many plants he brought from his travels were cultivated with success. Having survived a multitude of adventures, Tournefort died of an accident in 1708. He did not live to see the publication of his travel chronicle, which in the following three centuries became the basic manual to all travellers to these regions. Until today, researchers from numerous fields turn to Tournefort’s text, as it remains an invaluable source of information. He describes the places he visited in a particular systematic manner.

The systematic way he organizes his information on topography, economy, administration, ethnic composition, customs and habits of everyday life shows how one can arrive at truth and knowledge through research, methodical study, classification and generalisation. To document his research, Tournefort cites a hundred and thirty-five texts by Greek and Latin authors as well as Byzantine writers, Humanists, and earlier travel accounts.

He methodically narrates his visit to each island, and describes the locations as well as events that he witnessed and encounters with locals. He then continues with the island’s history from ancient times to the current age, citing the corresponding myths, and comparing with the information provided by ancient coins. Subsequently, he writes on the island’s administration and taxes, commerce, products and prices thereof. An entire chapter is dedicated to the Greek church. Tournefort also writes on monasteries and churches, house architecture and caves. He also describes the customs, the dress and the occupations of the inhabitants. He concludes his chapters with geographical observations from the highest point of each main region.

Naturally, his work includes engravings of city views, locations and monuments as well as plants, instruments and costumes. The text becomes alive with vivid descriptions of his encounters with islanders, be it Turks, Franks, Greeks or privateers. Of special interest are his descriptions of fortresses, ports, safe havens and his information on map drawing.

The second volume is a publication of his thoroughly documented manuscripts. It was not edited by Tournefort himself as had happened with the first. On numerous occasions he refers to the politics, administration and ethnic composition of the Ottoman Empire. He continues with his journey on the southern coast of the Black Sea to Armenia. The work closes with a short description of Smyrna and Ephesus.

Tournefort is considered the first to have shown the islands of the Archipelago to be “travel material”, as he offered information which inspired the interest for further research, and also highlighed each location’s wealth and uniqueness.

Oscar J. Cooper, a native son of Washington, D.C., cane of God fearing and ambitious parents, who desired their son to control himself and master the arts expected of the fine gentleman. So he was taught by his parents to be punctilious and neat in his dress and distinctly chivalrous in his manners, never flashy or ostentatious, yet fashionable, prim and precise.

Upon finishing the elementary schools of Washington, Brother Cooper entered Howard University, from which he obtained his baccalaureate degree and his degree of Doctor of Medicine. Some of the academic subjects had little interest for him; for his all-absorbing interest in college was Biology. His aptness and proficiency along this line drew him rapidly to Professor Just, who was at that time at Howard University teaching Biology. So accomplished was Brother Cooper in this subject that he was made a laboratory assistant in Biology.

Brother Cooper thus was the link, between our other Founders, all Juniors, in the fall of 1911, and Professor Just, the eminent, young, associate professor, who advised the three young pioneers, Love, Cooper and Coleman.

Brother Cooper early showed that he believed both in pleasure and in work. He liked to socialize; but he also liked to work, to work hard for the achievement of great ends. Accordingly in the founding of Omega, Brother Cooper worked unsparingly along with the other Founders many a night until late in the morning.

Upon completing his medical course, Brother Cooper settled in Philadelphia and worked untiringly and persistently until he built up one of the most lucrative practices to be found among the physicians of Philadelphia.

He had an excellent general library and an excellent medical library. It is a real inspiration to go through these libraries and through his office. Brother Cooper is ever discovering new techniques in his field and using them efficiently.

Text: "Thirteen Atlanta physicians organized the Brotherhood of Physicians in 1854. After many location and name changes, the Brotherhood evolved into the Fulton County Medical Society, which dedicated the Academy of Medicine as its headquarters here on December 15, 1941. Medical Society members played a major role in health care for all Georgians, including advances in the treatment of pellagra, hookworm, tuberculosis, and venereal disease. Designed by Philip T. Shutze and R. Kennon Perry, the Academy of medicine is an outstanding example of Neoclassical architecture. The Medical Association of Atlanta directed restoration in 1932 and deeded the Academy to the Atlanta Medical Heritage to preserve it as a historic building.

STEEL TRUE

BLADE STRAIGHT

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

KNIGHT

PATRIOT, PHYSICIAN & MAN OF LETTERS

22 MAY 1859 – 7 July 1930

AND HIS BELOVED, HIS WIFE

JEAN CONAN DOYLE

REUNITED 27 JUNE 1940

ACD, a passionate spiritualist since a compounded series of bereavements during and soon after the Great War, was convinced that fairies existed and that one could contact those on the ‘other side’ He was first buried, upright, in the garden of his house and was joined there by his wife. Only after the house was sold, were they both moved to a more conventional location, rotation and elevation.

There is no evidence that he succeeded in his last wish; to get in touch after he’d ‘passed over’.

Early photographs of his grave demonstrate the church’s prudish ostracization, punishment for his outlandish views. But Arthur gets the last laugh, as recent interments jostle for position around his monument.

“Steel true, blade straight” is from the poem 'My wife' by R.L. Stephenson.

It appears to be the done thing to leave a pipe on his grave.

The German humanist and physician Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was born and died in Nuremberg. He studied Medicine in Padua and other subjects in various European cities. While in Italy, he wrote a general description of the country’s antiquities. After returning to Germany, he became treasurer to the Episcopal See and cathedral of Saint-Sébald. Schedel possessed a very large library, of three hundred and seventy manuscripts and six hundred printed books, which included works on grammar, logic, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, history and theology.

With the help of a team of collaborators, Schedel compiled a landmark work in the history of books, both in its scope and in the quality of the final outcome. The "Chronicle" belongs in the category of illustrated histories of the world, a tradition that began in the Middle Ages. Without exception, these histories begin with the Creation and reach until the age when the book was written, in this case until 1490.

The first such attempt to record the history of the world was the "Chronikon" by Eusebius of Cesarea, in AD 300, which narrates the history of the Church, together with popular traditions, ancient and contemporary events, mixed with myths and legends. Schedel’s "Chronicle" commemorates eminent personalities and includes portraits of kings, priests (Jewish and Christian), philosophers and scholars. The history of the world is divided into six periods: 1) from the Creation of the World to the Flood, 2) from the Flood to the birth of Abraham 3) events that followed until the birth of David 4) from the reign of David to the conquest of Babylon 5) the events that followed until the birth of Christ 6) from the birth of Christ to 1490. The work closes with a text on the Second Coming and the description of the history, economy and culture of various cities. Schedel wrote the text and supervised the edition. The wood engravings are the work of Michael Wohlgemuth, painter and engraver, teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his son-in-law, also an engraver, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. It was published by the famous publisher Anton Koberger, who from 1489 onwards directed thirty-nine printshops with about one hundred employees. The work circulated in two editions (one in Latin and one in German), in a total of one thousand five hundred copies.

This first, extremely rare edition, consists of three hundred and twenty-five numbered folios, with Latin text in Gothic characters, and one thousand eight hundred and nine wood engravings (most of which, one thousand one hundred and sixty-four, are repeated). They mainly depict cities in Central and Southeast Europe, and rulers from these.

Known as the "Nürnberg Chronicle", this ambitious historical and geographical work, a product of the city in which flourished the theory and practice of scientific geography, as well as the art and craft of engraving, in the era of J. Van Eyck and A. Dürer, was a huge success, notwithstanding its high price. It was reprinted three times in the following ten years. In accordance with the spirit of the age, the images tend to be signifiers of place, in which snippets of verisimilitude are intermingled with purely imaginary elements. The same is true of the text, which includes passages from historical sources and a host of information presented without logical sequence and order. Twelve plates represent Athens, Corinth, Rhodes, Lacedaemon (Sparta), Troy, Alexandria, Achaea, Macedonia, Thrace, Athens, and two views of Constantinople.
