A black and white print of Dr. Robert John Gunn.
Notes:
Dr. Robert John Gunn was born on February 14, 1815 at Caithness, Scotland. He came to Canada in the autumn of 1842 and settled in Whitby where he was a physician and surgeon for 58 years. He was mayor of Whitby in 1862 and 1867-1868. He died at Whitby on June 24, 1902 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa. Dr. Robert John Gunn was described by Dr. Caniff in The Medical Profession of Ontario from 1783 to 1850 as follows: "Gunn, Robert J. - Born at Caithness, Scotland, February 14, 1815, was the son of Rev. Alex. Gunn, of the Kirk of Scotland. He was educated at a private school and at the University of Edinburgh. He studied his profession also at Edinburgh and became Lic. R.C.S. Edin. He then practised at Thurso for two years, and, in 1842, emigrated to Canada and settled at Whitby, then consisting of only a few houses, where he continued to practise, which became very extensive; and in the first years of his work he encountered much hardship in his rides of thirty or more miles over half-made roads. But he never refused to attend the calls of the sick, rich or poor, whatever might be the state of the weather, by night or day. Dr. Gunn did not appear before the Medical Board until April, 1846, when he obtained his license to practise.
Dr. Gunn enjoyed the confidence of the public, which he served as school trustee and chairman of the Board for many years, as a justice of the peace, town councillor, and mayor for three years, 1832, 1867 and 1868. He was appointed surgion to the gaol when Ontario became a county, 1853. He was also an elder of the Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Gunn married, October 24, 1849, Miss Agnes Pringle, of Whitby, a native of Edinburgh. Two daughters grew up, one of whom became the wife of Angus McKay, farmer of Pickering; the other, the wife of John Ball Dow, barrister, of Whitby." (as printed in Kaiser 1934, p. 28)

Marie Tussaud was born as Marie Grosholtz in 1761 in Strasbourg, France. Her mother worked for Philippe Curtius in Bern, Switzerland, who was a physician skilled in wax modelling. Curtius taught Tussaud the art of wax modelling, beginning when she was a child.
Grosholtz created her first wax sculpture in 1777 of Voltaire. At the age of 17 she became the art tutor to Madame Elizabeth, the sister of King Louis XVI of France, at the Palace of Versailles. Other famous people she modelled included Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin.
Madame Tussaud's wax museum is a major tourist attraction in London. Today's wax figures at Tussauds include historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars, and famous murderers.

The Royal College of Physicians, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun (1914–2001).
Sir Denys Lasdun won the competition to design the new headquarters in 1959. He was surprised at being asked to design for such a traditional body, given his modernist philosophy, and he made it clear that he would not create a classical style building.
RCP's current home since 1964 is the impressive Grade I listed building in Regent’s Park. Designed by architect Sir Denys Lasdun, the main façade is an unashamedly modern take on a classical portico, appearing blank with two massive overhanging strata supported by three slim central columns. Many of the interior features of the building reflect RCP traditions.

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is a registered charity that aims to ensure high-quality care for patients by promoting the highest standards of medical practice. It was founded in 1518 by a charter from Henry VIII. Its present grade I-listed building was designed by Sir Denys Lasdun in 1964 and is an award-winning museum and venue.
The RCP's garden of medicinal plants is now in its tenth year since replanting. It extends from the North American medicinal plant beds at the front to the eight box parterres in St Andrews Place containing plants used in medicines, as described in the College's Pharmacopoeia Londinensis of 1618 and immortalised in Culpeper's Herbal.
Around the lawns to the rear of the RCP there are rare medicinal plants from ancient Greece and Rome, Europe, the Middle East, the countries of the southern hemisphere and Asia.
The graceful plane tree in the lawn, a descendant of the tree under which Hippocrates taught his medical students on the island of Cos 2,400 years ago, reminds us of our long heritage of plants associated with medicine.
