This little guy and three of his buddies joined us for breakfast one morning at our hotel on Nosy Komba. He didn't eat much but sampled the fruit and cake, particularly enjoying the carrot cake.

Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis is a diunal arboreal species of day gecko and is widely distributed in Madagascar being found in tropical rain forest, grassland and agricultural areas. This photo was taken in the grounds of the Nature Lodge, Joffreville. It is a relatively large geckos and can reach a length of 20-25 cm (8-10 inches). It is iridescent green colour with mottled orange markings on the body and orange strip on the side of the face. The species is insectivorous.

Nature Lodge is 2 km south of the town of Joffreville (also known as Ambohitra). It is 30 km from Antsiranana and 7 km from Montagne d'Ambre National Park. Antsiranana (formerly called Diego-Suarez) is a port city in the far north of Madagascar and is also the capital of Diana Region.
