What I really miss about vinyl albums is cover art like the drawings by Pedro Bell (the "freak of the felt-tip pen"). Starting 1973, he did many covers for Funkadelic and George Clinton albums. When you got a new album, you spent more time checking out all the cartoons and all the small print than it took you to listen to the record ...

I played with T-Bone about 10 years ago. He's played with quite a few groups both famous and unknown, all over the state. Originally from Saginaw, he is now homeless in Detroit, living behind some bushes at a church. It was very hard to say goodbye to him but I gave him some money and told him I'd let a few of my musician friends know where he was in case they had a gig for him.

Garry “Starchild” Shider with George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic at the Louisiana Swamp Thing and Crawfish Festival in Austin Texas on April 5, 2008.

Funkadelic and Parliament guitarist Garry “Starchild” Shider died yesterday at his home in Upper Marlboro, Md, according to the AP. In March, the longtime sideman of funk legend George Clinton was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer.

Shider first recorded with Clinton on the 1971 Funkadelic album Maggot Brain and his playing, singing, and writing were crucial to the development of Clinton’s “P-Funk” sound. Among the songs co-penned by the guitarist was the classic Funkadelic cut “One Nation Under A Groove.”

Shider also cut a colorful figure onstage thanks to his habit of wearing a diaper. “George said, ‘Put a diaper on,’ and it was comfortable,” he recalled earlier this year. “I’ve been wearing it ever since.”

George Clinton’s official web site has paid tribute to the guitarist with the message, “Thank you Garry for all you have done, Forever funkin’ on!”
