Cusco, Peru

This is an enhancement of a Kodachrome slide originally taken in July 1969 with the Konica S2 35mm camera my parents gave me for my 21st birthday 3 years earlier. The slide was recently transferred to digital format. It was very faded and had mildew spots on it. I was able to use Photoshop to restore its color and remove most of the spots

There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.

Taking an image, freezing a moment, reveals how rich reality truly is.

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving.

On top of a sand dune in Peru, amazing place. We all stood at the top with our sandboards and candle wax waiting for the first one to go down. I tried to steal a dune buggy later that evening. It was the best day...

The San Blas neighborhood is the heart of the city of Cusco. People who have been in this neighborhood say that a mysterious energy is felt through its streets.

The Central Market of Cusco or Mercado de San Pedro was built in 1925 and is the oldest in the city.

Photography is an austere and blazing poetry of the real.

The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.

It's a Daewoo Tico. These things were all over in all sorts of condition. Including some heavily modified in the ricer style. Most all of the cars in Peru were covered with stickers from Jesus to Speedy Gonzales and Neo. They often had sayings across the back window, reading things like "You can run but you can't hide".

I asked our guide about it, and he mentioned that once you purchased a car, you took it and christened it with stickers and whatnot to make it yours.

We were warned not to take a taxi without a topper (like this one) Because they were unlicensed and were less trustworthy.

A woman is posing near Cusco, Perú in her traditional attire. Each piece of clothing has its own unique history. The blanket on her back, for example, is called a K'eperina. It's a simple rectangular shaped blanket worn over the back and knotted in front. They use it to carry just about everything, from food to babies.

1/6 plate daguerreotype in full case. No photographer's mark, but written in a period hand on the pad is "Tacna 25 Nov: 52. " I haven't been able to find any records of a daguerreian operating in Tacna, Peru - it may have been taken by a pioneering local or possibly by an American trained operator such as Benjamin Franklin Pease who worked in Lima at this time.

Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Black and white photography has the potential to make any photographer a better photographer.

The most colorful thing in the world is black and white, it contains all colors and at the same time excludes all.
