Once again it is October and time to visit our great Mexican museum of Fine Arts......Every October leading up to the Day of the Dead......The Museum displays some elaborate ofrendas of those who have passed away during the year......Some of the ofrendas are amazingly well done and provide the opportunity to learn about the lives of people whom we never will meet - but are proof that these people made an important impact on someone's life......
Also - the Museum hosts Latin American artist, who they bring in from Mexico......these artist are great to talk to and visit - and watch work.......We have in the past gotten personalized art from artists as they create items at your direction......Every year there are new people to meet and talk to and to see the wonderful work they create...AND - in the case of Jacobo and Maria Angeles - sometimes they return.......We love the whimsical animal carvings that these two create and were thrilled to see them here again this year.......AND - for the short owners of the house......Sugar Skulls are all the rave........
For anyone who has never been to this museum......Or has never went through this experience........It comes highly recommended from those of us who 'bumble' around and bump into everything......It remains one of those few 'Must Return To' items every year when we start thinking about throwing candy at the monsters and beasts that will travel the streets this week.......

Gordon-Van Tine was a Davenport company that sold ready-cut homes by mail order, much like the houses sold by Sears Roebuck, Aladdin and Montgomery Ward that are more widely known.
You could leaf through a catalog, pick out a design and plan you liked, and then buy everything you needed to build your home, hiring your own contractor, of course. Supplies included already-cut lumber, joists, studs, rafters, sheathing, clapboards, shingles, plaster, windows, nails, paint, interior columns and hardware.
Plumbing, electrical and heating systems were available, too, and buyers could personalize their homes with porches, fireplaces, sunrooms, window boxes and cabinetry.
At its peak, Gordon-Van Tine employed 350 people, selling an estimated 54,000 homes nationwide under its own name and about 20,000 for Montgomery Ward. Taken together, the total would rival that of Sears, although Hunter says she does not have enough data to be sure.
Gordon-Van Tine was incorporated in 1907 as a subsidiary of the U.N. Roberts Co., which began in 1866 as a Davenport sawmill. Van Tine began selling ready-cut homes in 1916.
It was located in what is now the Riverview building on Federal Street in Davenport; the initials GVT still can be found at the front door.
In 1946, it was sold to a Cincinnati salvage company that liquidated the firm. Employees at the Davenport headquarters and at lumber yards in Rock Island, Moline and Bettendorf were thrown out of work, and those associated with the company felt betrayed.
Descendants of former employees have said Van Tine’s owners expected the Cincinnati company would continue to operate it.
“The fact that it was a huge company and disappeared so quickly — that’s what interests people,” Melita Tunnicliff says.

Mark Pimlott's approach to the issue of Bekleidung challenges the exclusivity or intense personalization, or psychologizing, that has developed around it in discussions of the Interior: the claustrophobia that perhaps abounds in the stage sets and photographs of Erwin Olaf. He proposes, instead, to explore the effects of these contrived interior settings in relation to the effects of the world without, which bring them into being.
A prevailing notion within literature considering interior design and architecture is that the interior is an extension of our private selves, and by interpolation, of our bodies and their clothing. Indeed, the interior has been likened to a kind of clothing of another body that is an extension of ourselves. There are intimacies of various kinds in the private interior, reinforced by the very close contact between our physical bodies and the materials of the interior, which permit us to be less reserved there: we are nearly alone, we look at our reflection, we dress and undress, sleep, make love, lose ourselves. However, the interior does not exist in solitude, but in relation to the World; and the scenes that we characterize as private are cluttered with references and connections with that realm we think of as public. The public reaches inside to the private, and even in the space of dreams, the private reaches toward the public through a vast catalogue of affinities manifest in the imagery, association, and atmosphere of the interior.
Mark Pimlott is an artist, designer, writer and teacher, whose practice encompasses installation, photography, film, art for public spaces and interior design. He is assistant professor in TU Delft’s Chair of Architectural Design/ Interiors, and leader of the course 'The Architecture of the Interior'. Pimlott is the author of Without and within: essays on territory and the interior (2007) and In passing: Mark Pimlott photographs (2010).
