The year ends as it began with all manner of weather extremes. The predictions for dire winter weather (the same ones I hear each year) have thus far evolved (in Ohio anyway) as one of the mildest on record. We've had a couple of snowfalls, however they melted away within a day or two. The residual is a landscape of of grass and earth, bare pavement and rooftops, all of which are often ensconced in snow by this point in the year. Snowpack has just not yet evolved and the earth is completely thawed. This is not to say the weather has been calm. The mild air has resulted in some hellacious storms of the sort more typical of March and April. We've been spared killer tornadoes, but hit hard with torrential rain and buffeted by massive windstorms. This morning began with snow and sleet and is predicted to end with high temps around 50, far above average. No idea how this story will end, but I have little expectation of peace and calm returning anytime soon. I took this photo from the access drive of the village cemetery after a recent storm. Always shocking to see a gravestone, in this case a veteran of the Civil War, emerging from a pool of water. The muted color of autumn leaves floating just below the surface underscores the wide seasonal overlap.
It's amazing how far Green Herons can extend their neck. I think if you x-rayed one you'd find a Slinky! Green Heron, Wildwood Lake, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

On a recent trip to a local pond I saw these eyes sticking up out of the water. I was lucky that the frog didn’t move as I got close enough to take this photo.

a lonely orchid in the middle on all the greens and mist. Volcanoes National Park, Big Island of Hawaii
At Katmai National Park, each bear had his or her own style of fishing. Some would pounce, some would herd the fish towards the shore, some would wait at the top of the falls to catch the fish in mid-air. This bear preferred to stick his head underwater to look for the salmon. This is a shot of him coming up for some air!
Actually, last season's Lotus plant material is sinking into the pond at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens. And, we can see new green Lotus leaves growing and forming this season's Lotus pad.
By summertime, some of those leaves will be as large as 20 inches across. Anyhow, have a great weekend!

This photo was taken through the periscope of an old Russian WWII submarine. The windows are double exposed on top on that image.
Great Crested Grebe coming up for air! He did catch a small fish but one gulp & it was gone, no time to get a shot.

“I.C.I.! Instant Carnet Island”
I could have spent much more time watching this Anhinga fish but it caught it's fill and went into drip-dry mode on a nearby branch. I just loved watching it move it's head just like a submarine periscope in a slow up and down motion as it came up and went back down underwater to catch more fish. Unless you could see into the water to see where the bird was, it was really hard to predict when and where it would raise it's head from the water again.

- On the photo is not a bell pepper but a sweet pointed pepper.
- Sweet pepper (also known as Jon's Head or a pepper in the United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland and a capsicum in Australia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore and New Zealand), is a cultivar group of the species Capsicum annuum.
Cultivars of the plant produce fruits in different colors, including red, yellow, orange, green, chocolate/brown, vanilla/white, and purple.
Peppers are native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.
Peppers are botanically fruits, but are generally considered in culinary contexts to be vegetables.
- Sweet pointed peppers
Sweet pointed peppers are unmistakably members of the sweet pepper family. They are however quite a bit sweeter than ordinary sweet peppers. They also have a thinner skin, and therefore won't repeat on you as much as ordinary sweet peppers may do.
Sweet pointed peppers can be eaten either raw or cooked.
Being so very sweet, sweet pointed peppers make ideal snacks to still hunger pangs between meals. Thanks to their shape they can also be attractively stuffed with cream cheese or minced meat and then served as a first course or a side dish. They taste great grilled too.

- Zoete puntpaprika
