Midtown Manhattan Pre-Christmas Walk
Perhaps a bit cloudy, and perhaps a bit cool, but it was just a few days before the official start of winter, and just six days before Christmas, so it was off to once again see the sights of another Christmastime in the city. Midtown was filled with tourists from both near and far, and I could easily say that the city was not only crowded but jammed with people. The sidewalks were to the point of overflowing, whether it was in Bryant Park, the streets around Macy’s and Herald Square, or along Fifth Avenue. Trying to get into Rockefeller Center and view the Christmas tree was a challenge as it was so crowded. St. Patrick’s Cathedral had two sets of lines trying to get into the building. But a bit further north at Trump tower the faithful were entertained by the Prez. himself (actually a masked look alike).
But as usual the city was decorated for the upcoming holiday period, there were lights all about, and everything was a sea of color. It was a good time to go, late afternoon and early evening, as the sky darkened and the lights came on. New York has long been known as a colorful place after dark, and a city that never sleeps. It was however a challenge to photograph, especially when taking photos handheld after dark. Trying to use a tripod would not have worked at all, as people would have tripped over the tripod legs legs resulting in a broken camera or worse a broken leg or two. After my “after dark” walk along the High Line in November, I can say I have perfected my photo technique for this type of photography. There are a lot of tradeoffs, but the end results speak for themselves. With my Pentax K3 Mark III, the winning combination has been; shooting Aperture priority, High ISO 3200 max, Lens opening F4.5 to 7.1, and then an Exposure compensation of -1.7 to -2.0. Of course, additional fine tuning as time went on.
