Our Stargazers bloomed profusely this past year and even

the neighbors enjoyed their intense perfume.

The word perfume used today derives from the Latin per fumus, meaning "through smoke". Perfumery, or the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and was further refined by the Romans and Persians.

Although perfume and perfumery also existed in India, much of its fragrances are incense based. The earliest distillation of Ittar, arabic meaning scent, was mentioned in the Hindu Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita. The Harshacharita, written in 7th century in Northern India mentions use of fragrant agarwood oil.

The world's first recorded chemist is considered to be a woman named Etruscan, a perfume maker who was mentioned in a cuneiform tablet from the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. She distilled flowers, oil, and calamus with other aromatics then filtered and put them back in the still several times.

In 2005, archaeologists uncovered what are believed to be the world's oldest perfumes in Pyrgos, Cyprus. The perfumes date back more than 4,000 years. The perfumes were discovered in an ancient perfumery. At least 60 stills, mixing bowls, funnels and perfume bottles were found in the 43,000-square-foot (4,000 m2) factory. In ancient times people used herbs and spices, like almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin, bergamot, as well as flowers.

A Mitsuoko perfume bottled by Guerlain.

Pierre-François Guerlain opened a perfume store at 42 rue de Rivoli in Paris in 1828. Guerlain opened a much larger store and factory at 15 rue de la Paix in 1840. Guerlain created its greatest fragrance, Eau de Cologne Impériale, for Emperor Napoleon III in 1853. Guerlain became His Majesty's Official Perfumer, and later created perfumes for Queen Victoria and Queen Isabella II of Spain. Guerlain created its first true perfurme (rather than an eau de cologne) with Jicky in 1889. Jacques Guerlain, grandson of the founder, created some of Guerlain's finest scents after 1900. Mitsouko debuted in 1919. Europe was fascinated by eastern Asia at the time, and the name (which means "mystery" in Japanese) was chosen to reflect this. Guerlain was purchase by the LVMH Group in 1994.

The bottle was created in 1853 by the glassmaker Pochet & du Courval to hold Eau de Cologne Impériale. The curlicue design on the corners are inspired by the dome of the Vendôme Column in the Place Vendôme in Paris.

Perfume Pagoda, on the way to the pagoda

The Perfume Pagoda (Vietnamese: Chùa Hương, Chinese: 香寺) is a vast complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the limestone Huong Tich mountains. It is the site of a religious festival which draws large numbers of pilgrims from across Vietnam. The centre of the Huong Temple lies in Hương Sơn Commune, Mỹ Đức District, former Hà Tây Province (now Hanoi). The centre of this complex is the Perfume Temple, also known as Chua Trong (Inner Temple), located in Huong Tich Cave.

It is thought that the first temple was a small structure on the current site of Thien Tru which existed during the reign of Lê Thánh Tông in the 15th century. Legend claims that the site was discovered over 2000 years ago by a monk meditating in the area, who named the site after a Tibetan mountain where Buddha practiced asceticism. A stele at the current temple dates the building of a terrace, stone steps and Kim Dung shrine to 1686, during the reign of Le Hy Tong, at around the same time that Chua Trong was being constructed. Over the years some of the structures were damaged and replaced. The original statues of Buddha and Quan Am were cast from bronze in 1767 and replaced with the current statues in 1793. More recently, damage was done during both the French and the American wars. Both the gate and the bell tower at Thien Tru Pagoda were destroyed, the bell tower rebuilt in 1986 and the gate completed in 1994.
