A special evening of live art events by Paris-based artists Hicham Berrada, Marie-Luce Nadal, and Raphaël Zarka. Spread across outdoor locations at LASALLE College of the Arts, the events activated processes and ideas from artworks in the exhibition 'Sous la lune/Beneath the moon'. Visitors had the opportunity to experience the exhibition, and meet the artists who were performing on the night.
Programme
7:30–10:00pm
Performances by skateboarders with 'Schönflies 329' by Raphaël Zarka
Basement mezzanine, opposite the entrance to Earl Lu Gallery
In this performance skateboarders from Isle Skateboards and Singapore skated, flew and glided on 'Schönflies 329', an assemblage of eight wooden modular sculptures by Raphaël Zarka, inspired by public sculptures, mathematics and architecture. The sculptures refer and respond to German mathematician Arthur Moritz Schönflies’ work on crystallography, as well as Zarka’s own research on the history of skateboarding.
7:45–8:30pm
Hicham Berrada, 'Présage (Premonition)'
Verandah, in front of The Singapore Airlines Theatre
Chemical experiments performed by Hicham Berrada were filmed and projected live on a 4-metre wide screen. Resembling transforming clouds and organic shapes, the projections were accompanied by sound from invited sound artist Mark Wong. The performance drew on Berrada’s ongoing research into chemical processes and biological conditions.
8:30–9:30pm
Marie-Luce Nadal, 'Cultiver la brume (Growing mist)'
Verandah, opposite the entrance to Gallery 1
Marie-Luce Nadal created the illusion of mist in the new performance. The work referenced her research into systems that control and manipulate natural environments. Nadal’s previous projects include 'Fabrique de nuages (Cloud factory)', a system that reproduces clouds, and the Fair Weather Foundation, a non-for-profit enterprise that sells rights to air in anticyclones.
'Performing the moon' was part of Singapore Art Week (16–24 January 2016). Along with the exhibition 'Sous la lune/Beneath the moon', the event was co-produced by the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore and the Palais de Tokyo (Paris).
The exhibition and event were presented under the aegis of the Emerging Talents from Emerging Countries programme initiated by the Total Corporate Foundation and Palais de Tokyo (Paris).

BBU had more energy than some punk bands I’ve seen. They tore through every song they had and then some, pulling in lifts from Nirvana (“Polly”) and Refused (“New Noise”) along with Aqua but making the night their own. Their high energy music is designed around the juke, a regional full body style of dancing that one part Pop N Lock one part meth overdose; fast footed frenzy, coordinated combustions, and dropped low hip work. Regional folk dancing at a million miles an hour, tied to tap and soft shoe tradition but so far as to be nigh unrecognizable at first glance because your first glance is full of “how do you get your body to do that?”
All three MCs were in constant motion during tracks moving from the front of the stage to the side depending on whose verse it was, and they tried to give a bit of context and education to the audience, one piece on the revolutionary edge of BBU led to the hilarious flock of white fists in the air. The over-educated children of the bourgeoisie showing revolutionary sympathies on command as though upsetting the system were as easy to do as changing your brand of soap.
The new music has me salivating to for a new release from BBU that will give the Chicagoans more excuses to tour so that I never miss them again. Just absolute wonders to behold.

The puppet theatre known as the Opera dei Pupi emerged in Sicily at the beginning of the nineteenth century and enjoyed great success among the island’s working classes.
The puppeteers told stories based on medieval chivalric literature and other sources, such as Italian poems of the Renaissance, the lives of saints and tales of notorious bandits.
The dialogues in these performances were largely improvised by the puppeteers.
The two main Sicilian puppet schools in Palermo and Catania were distinguished principally by the size and shape of the puppets, the operating techniques and the variety of colourful stage backdrops.
These theatres were often family-run businesses; the carving, painting and construction of the puppets, renowned for their intense expressions, were carried out by craftspeople employing traditional methods.
The puppeteers constantly endeavoured to outdo each other with their shows, and they exerted great influence over their audience. In the past, these performances took place over several evenings and provided opportunities for social gatherings.
The economic and social upheavals caused by the extraordinary economic boom of the 1950s had a considerable effect on the tradition, threatening its very foundations. At that time, similar forms of theatre in other parts of Italy disappeared, some of them to re-emerge some twenty years later.
The Opera dei Pupi is the only example of an uninterrupted tradition of this kind of theatre. Owing to current economic difficulties puppeteers can no longer make a living from their art, prompting them to turn to more lucrative professions.
Tourism has contributed to reducing the quality of performances, which were previously aimed at a local audience only.
