Arab emerging fashion designers always add an Arabic touch to their designs. Sometimes it's the Hamsa or the evil Eye or simply Arabic letters.

I have noticed a trend in Greek designs as well. They all use patterns and colors not only on their clothing but also as we all know in their architecture and interior design. The blue and white houses on their Islands blend in. I have also noticed their amazing kaftans and maxi dresses. Once again blending in with their colorful islands!

Here I was wearing a maxi backless dress by a great Greek designer called Twins and a slipper with a perfect Greek pattern.

Bet Giorgis, the Church of St George is a perfect Greek cross form, cut free from the surrounding rock in a precise shape. It sits comfortably alongside the busy life of Lalibela & is still in daily use - a church first, tourist attraction second.

Lalibela is a town in northern Ethiopia. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, second only to Aksum, and is a center of pilgrimage for much of the country. Unlike Aksum, the population of Lalibela is almost completely Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. Lalibela was intended to be a New Jerusalem in response to the capture of Jerusalem by Muslims, and many of its historic buildings take their name and layout from buildings in Jerusalem.

Well I think I was a little carried away then by "The Pirates of the Caribbean"! hehe

I love a Sunday lunch in the mountains in winter with a roaring fire and friends - η παρέα μας - all about - several of whom speak perfect Greek.. We were at a taverna - A La Palaia - in the village of Strinilas in the mountains of Corfu. Left to right - Tim, Lin (hidden), Cinta, Nikki, Sally, Paul and Simon. We started - after a winding drive from Ano Korakiana - with a selection of garlic mushrooms, pies, snails, and of course fresh bread and garlic butter plus jugs of white and red village wine and lager. Main courses chosen from the kitchen included large shrimps, squid in its own ink, roast lamb, and pork chops - and lots of Greek salad with goat cheese and roast potatoes. We finished with honey sweets in filo pastry and different coffees and cinammon apple slices. We left around 8.00pm.

"The buildings belonging to the later phase of the early period are distinguished by their symmetrical plans with four entrances. The famous Ananda temple which was also built by Kyanzittha is the finest and most imposing example of this type. Tradition says that Kyanzittha had reproduced the general appearance of the cave where Indian Buddhist monks dwelt on Nandamula Hill in the Himalayas. The central portion of the structure is a block measuring 175 feet on each side and 35 feet high. From the center of each face of the basement there projects a large gabled portico with four huge square pillars inside. The plan thus assumes a perfect Greek cross, the overall length along each axis being 290 feet. The main basement is surmounted by two receding curvilinear roofs and four receding terraces crowned by a spire in the form of a mitre-like pyramid called sikhara." - Aung Thaw, Historical Sites in Burma. Sarpay Beikman Press, 1972, page 58.

Ananda Pahto, presumably built around 1105 AD, shows perfect proportions, influenced by Indian culture and architecture. Entrances give the building the shape of a perfect Greek cross and each is decorated by a pinnacle. The base and the terraces are decorated by glazed tiles with pictures from the Jakata. Inside the cube there are 4 teak Buddha statues, only two of them original. During the Pyatho full moon celebration (December, January) thousands of pilgrims meet here: during the 3-day celebration a thousand monks sing day and night their religious hymns.

This grade I listed building stands in St James' Cemetery close to the Anglican Cathedral. In the 1996 book, Lancashire: Liverpool and the Southwest

by Nikolaus Pevsner is written:

"Overlooking the cemetery from the NW is the ORATORY, or chapel, Foster's best surviving building. It is a perfect Greek Doric temple with a six-column portico at each end. The walls are windowless, the interior lit from above. Ionic columns support the coffered plaster ceiling".

John Foster (c1787-1846) was born in Liverpool, the son of an architect of the same name. He succeeded his father as senior surveyor to the Corporation of Liverpool in 1824. He designed both the Oratory and the Cemetery.
