We have already met some deserted houses in previous villages, and unfortunately there are some in Pyles as well. Here I met a couple of second-generation immigrants with their young children, who traveled back from U.S.A. visiting their place of origin. The parents were around thirty and they spoke perfect Greek to each other. However, the children did not speak Greek very well, and they spoke English to each other while playing. Let's hope someday some people will fill this house with life again ...

In this video I have put together the images from Josh Foley's Longford Motor Racing Mural with a description of the historic street circuit in 1963. The cars raced around this track from 1953-1968, in conditions unimaginable today.
As you'll see in this historic footage there were minimal safety barriers, the drivers wore helmets no bigger than bicycle helmets, and some chose not to wear safety harnesses in the belief that it would enable a quicker getaway in case of fire.
Two drivers were killed in practice at Longford over the years, including a young rising star of the Grand Prix circuit, American Timothy Mayer. New Zealand driver Bruce McLaren (a Formula 1 team bears his name today) wrote an epitaph for Mayer that sadly fitted his own death at Goodwood, England in 1970:
"The news that he died instantly was a terrible shock to all of us. But who is to say that he had not seen more, done more and learned more in his 26 years than many people do in a lifetime? It is tragic, particularly for those left. Plans half-made must now be forgotten and the hopes must be rekindled. Without men like Tim, plans and hopes mean nothing. To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. I can’t say these things well, but I know this is what I feel to be true. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability. Life is measured in terms of achievement, not in years alone."

This was an era of heroic men in still relatively primitive motor sport conditions. Some would have called them foolhardy, others courageous. Either way, they fit the perfect Greek description of a hero.
