Day 4. The 34 penguins, created by the Cracking Art Group, a Milan-based art movement, the yellow penguins are all made from recycled bottles. “The penguin is a social animal and has a strong ecological meaning: its survival is affected by global warming and ice melting,” says the group’s website. “Despite being loved by many, this animal is constantly endangered by human technological progress that brings wellness to man but damage to the planet.”

Everyday one group went on shore for ½ the day and then the other group would go scouting in the zodiacs. We were about 115 people on board our cruise so with the strict regulations that only 100 people were on shore at any time we were split in two groups which worked out well Cruising along the shoreline with the Zodiacs we got to see lots of wildlife.

Cape of Good Hope
Photo of African penguins taken from a boardwalk over sand dunes in South Africa at a penguin colony on the Cape of Good Hope.
The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as the jackass penguin and black-footed penguin, is a species of penguin, confined to southern African waters.
It is also widely known as the "jackass" penguin for its loud, donkey-like bray, although several related species of South American penguins produce the same sound. Like all extant penguins it is flightless, with a streamlined body, and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine habitat. Adults weigh on average 2.2–3.5 kg (4.9–7.7 lb) and are 60–70 cm (24–28 in) tall. It has distinctive pink patches of skin above the eyes and a black facial mask; the body upperparts are black and sharply delineated from the white underparts, which are spotted and marked with a black band. The pink gland above their eyes helps them to cope with changing temperatures.
When the temperature gets hotter, the body of the African penguin sends more blood to these glands to be cooled by the air surrounding it. This then causes the gland to turn a darker shade of pink.
The African penguin is a pursuit diver and feeds primarily on fish and squid. Once extremely numerous, the African penguin is declining rapidly due to a combination of several threats and is classified as endangered. It is a charismatic species and is popular with tourists. – Wikipedia

A family jumps. The dad was enthusiastic. They were some of the first folks to jump during the Penquin Plunge held at City Beach in Witefish Montana as part of the City’s annual Winter Carnival. The plunge is held to benefit Special Olmypics and is sponsered by Local Law Enforcement agencies and businesses. Over 130 people jumped and raised more than $40,000! Notice the girl on the right jumped directly to the waiting firemen.

At the Calgary Zoo watching a Rockhopper Penquin cooling off, Calgary, Alberta
My husband and I spent most of Saturday at the Calgary Zoo.
We had hoped to capture the penquins walking around the zoo but the wind was too strong so the outdoor walk was canceled.
Stayed way too long in the penquin enclosure photographing these cuties.

This of course is Alien World. Maybe someone can explain how the Chocolate Penquin and his friend could have been formed in an area with the two huge rocks on the left. The two rocks on the left appear to have been tossed into this area by some force. I realize erosion probably created all 4 rock formations, but I am still fascinated by the differences and their proximity.
Once again, if you should go to this area, have a hiking buddy and take plenty of water. Also, please leave the rock formations as you found them so others can enjoy them.

"Those 2 King Penquins weren't here yesterday...We are lucky."
Said the tour guide of the Beagle Channel Wildlife Cruise.
Not bad for me to have captured 2 lifers in a single shot.
Penguins are such wonderful little creatures and so much fun to watch. To have seen them in one of their own habitat without getting cold is one of my fondest memories.
Boulders Beach is the area where these African penguins frolic on the beach. It is a quick trip from Cape Town South Africa. Along with seeing these cute little guys one must stop and see the spectacular Cape of Good Hope.
