This series of shots come from the Melbourne Aquarium - it was really great - recommend it to all. Difficult to shoot through perspex but some of these are worth sharing. This shot is of a 2 metre shark in a shallow pool where there were sword fish and big barramundi. Unbelievable what waits below the water !
In the icy weather these penguins are actually about to huddle meaning they are actually trying to keep their-selves warm.
The largest of the penguins breeding on the New Zealand mainland, Yellow-eyed Penguins breed on the southeast coast of the South Island as well as on Stewart Island and on the Auckland and Campbell Islands in the NZ subantarctic. On the mainland, yellow-eyed penguins breed in the Catlins, Otago Peninsula, North Otago and Banks Peninsula.
These birds are on a private conservation reserve on the Otago Peninsula. Each morning they leave their nests in the grassy hills, traipse down the beach and out to spend the day fishing. Each evening they return and repeat the journey. They share their beach with the endangered New Zealand Sea Lion, which has been known to eat the penguins, so the birds proceed across the beach cautiously and into the hilly ground where the Sea Lions are unlikely to follow.
