Mallotus villosus, know in eastern Canada as capelin, breed on the stony beaches of Newfoundland each summer. They 'roll' up onto the beaches on the incoming waves in massive numbers to lay their eggs, after which they catch the next wave back into the ocean.

However, some do get stranded too high on the beach. The fish will then flip and flop to try getting back down to where the water is. Some fail. There are three basic techniques they seem to use. Some will twist/roll. Others employ a 'moonwalk' technique where they undulate their bodies, tail first, down the beach. They will also pivot on their nose, as shown in this image.

The fish prefer to breed on beaches with smaller gravel, like this one. All the little whitish/brownish balls you see, that looks almost like sand, are eggs, but the individual in the photo is a male so it only contributed the milk that contains the spermatozoa that fertilizes the eggs. The males develop stronger colours on their back and enlarged pelvic fins. Females are more silver/white on the sides and will have a swollen abdomen due to all the eggs. If conditions are not right, they will also breed off-shore.

The photo isn't the best, but does illustrate most of the points noted above.

I’m sitting here at my desk wondering what to write and I’m struggling. Most of the time I like to accompany my photos with some sort of chatter. Sometimes it’s about the photo but most of the time it has nothing at all to do with. I do this mainly to keep my writing brain active, which I must admit a talent I’ve always been poor at. Suffering from a level of dyslexia English was a totally failed subject at school, It was a skill I did not need the first part of my working life as a mechanical fitter, It also did not hinder me in my switch of careers into Information Technology (IT). However as I moved into management the more I needed to write, the word processor and spell checker came to my rescue as it was painful to be referring to a dictionary for every other word, even so I know when I read this back the spelling and wrong or missing words will be most evident along with poor gramma. So now I write drivel and it’s OK if you don’t read it, it’s for me as is the photo. At the moment I’m looking at instructions entitled “Pelvic Floor Exercises for Men”. I should have been doing these exercises the last 11 months waiting for my prostate procedure, but I haven’t. This is not out of laziness more from an inability to be convinced I’m doing the exercise properly as I’m still struggling to identify the muscle in question. Now with just over a fortnight to go before I go under the laser I’m resigned to not be prepared in that department and the foreseen circumstances. Anyway a little about the photo. When the storm was upon us and everything seemed lost the heavens opened and a messenger appeared. it’s all there in my imagination and photo.

The comet or marine betta (Calloplesiops altivelis) is a species of reef-associated tropical marine fish in the family Plesiopidae.

The comet is native in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea, commonly found between 3 and 50 m deep.

Adults are usually found near reefs, and in caves and crevices along drop-offs. The comet is nocturnal by nature, and will hide under ledges and in holes by day. During night time, it leaves its hiding place and swims along the reef searching for food.

Comets are predators, feeding on crustaceans and small fish. They catch their prey by approaching it swimming sideways and then waiting for the prey to try to escape.

Comets possess an eye-like shape which is actually the dorsal fin. When in danger, this fish will poke its head into a hole and expose its tail end, which mimics the head of the moray eel.

The dark brown to black comet can reach a maximum length of 20 cm. The white spots are found on its body, head and fins, except for the median and pelvic fins which have small blue spots.

De oogvlekrifwachter of kortweg rifwachter (Calloplesiops altivelis) is een tropische zeevis uit de familie Plesiopidae.

De oogvlekrifwachter leeft in de Indische Oceaan en de Rode Zee in de buurt van rotsige riffen, holen en spleten, meestal tussen 3 en 50 meter diepte. Overdag houdt de oogvlekrifwachter zich schuil en 's-nachts zwemt de vis langs het rif op zoek naar voedsel. Het is een roofvis die vanuit een schuilplaats zijn prooi vaak zijwaarts besluipt. Het voedsel bestaat vooral uit schaaldieren en kleine vissen.

Komt de oogvlekrifwachter zelf in gevaar dan steekt de vis zijn kop tussen de stenen of duikt met z'n hoofd in het zand en laat dan alleen z'n staart en rugvin zien. Achterop de rugvin zit een grote oogvlek waarmee de kop van een murene wordt geïmiteerd en eventuele rovers worden gefopt.

De donker bruine tot zwarte oogvlekrifwachters bereiken een lengte van maximaal circa 20 centimeter. Honderden witte vlekjes bedekken het lichaam, het hoofd en de vinnen.

This uncommon species is found in coastal reefs and weedy areas or lagoon reefs, often on algal flats or seagrass beds. Monogamous, always in pairs. Females carry the eggs in their pelvic fins that are modified to form a brood pouch. Feed on small crustaceans. This one is a red young female variation, relatively rare.

Arothron stellatus is a medium-sized fish which grows up to 120 cm (47 in) in length. Its body is oval shaped, spherical and relatively elongated. The skin is not covered with scales but is prickly. The fish has no pelvic fin and no lateral line. The dorsal fin and the anal fin are small, symmetric, and located at the rear end of the body. The head is large with a short snout that has two pairs of nostrils, and the mouth is terminal with four strong teeth.

The background coloration goes from white to grey, and the body is harmoniously dotted with black spots. The ventral area is usually clearer. The size of the spots is inversely proportional to the size of the fish; thus, a young individual will have large spots and adults of maximal size will have small spots. The juveniles have a yellowish body background coloration with dark stripes. The young adults still have stripes on the ventral area that will turn to spots later, and also some recollection of yellow on the body. Arothron stellatus feeds on benthic invertebrates, sponges, algae, the polyps of corals such as Acropora, crustaceans and mollusks.

This pufferfish is diurnal. It is mainly solitary and defends a territory. Arothron stellatus contains a highly toxic poison, tetrodotoxin, in its ovaries and to a lesser extent its skin and liver, which protects it from voracious predators. It becomes toxic as it eats bacteria that contain the toxin. To ward off potential enemies, they can inflate their bodies by swallowing air or water. One of my favorite subjects! They float inside the sea rods (the brown corals in the image) almost perfectly camouflaged (they look brown underwater without the strobe), all swaying in the water column. One second you see them, the next they seemingly have vanished. Sometimes because they have darted to another sea rod, sometimes because they merely turned to only show their thin frame, usually because you just can't center them in your viewfinder. It is always a bit of a cat and mouse game.

With this image I was able to get the slender filefish between strands of coral. Better still, with both its dorsal fin up and its pelvic fin down. It will be a hard combo to beat.

Seagull with a Skate? Skates are cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae in the superorder Batoidea of rays. Skates have a flat body shape with flat pectoral fins that extend the length of their body. Skates mate at the same nursery ground each year. In order to fertilize the egg, males use claspers, a structure attached to the pelvic fins. The claspers allow them to direct the flow of semen into the female's cloaca. Skates are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs with very little development in the mother. This is one major difference from rays, which are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young. When a female skate is fertilized, a protected case forms around the embryo called an egg case, or more commonly a mermaid's purse. This egg case is then deposited out of the mother's body onto the ocean floor where the skates develop for up to 15 months before they enter the external environment.

The Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. First run in 1839, it is a handicap steeplechase over an official distance of about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs

The 50-1 outsider Noble Yeats won the Grand National at Aintree to give amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen a fairytale farewell in his final ride.

Last year's winner Minella Times, the mount of Rachael Blackmore, fell at the ninth fence when at the back of the field, while strongly fancied mare Snow Leopardess was pulled up before the second circuit.

However, there was a sad note to the race with the news that Discorama suffered a fatal injury.

An Aintree spokesman said the horse, trained in Ireland by Paul Nolan, was injured on the Flat while travelling between fences and had an untreatable pelvic injury.

My dive guide told me that this is a Devil scorpion fish (Scorpaenopsis diabolus). It sort of glumphed across the seabed at intervals. One of many species of scorpion fish in the Red Sea. All have venomous dorsal, analysis and pelvic fins! Not a fish to argue with. Found at Marsa Shuna south of Port Ghalib on our last dive of the holiday.

As moréiasPE, ou mocréias PB, são peixes esquisitos,angüiliformes, da família dos murenídeos (Muraenidae), tendo como uma des suas principais características o corpo longo e cilíndrico. Há cerca de 200 espécies distribuídas por 15 géneros, das quais a maior mede 4 metros de comprimento. As moreias habitam cavidades rochosas e são animais carnívoros, que caçam com base num sentido de olfacto apurado. Não têm escamas e, para protecção,algumas espécies segregam da pele um muco que contém toxinas. A maior parte das moreias não tem barbatanas peitorais e pélvicas. A sua pele tem padrões elaborados que servem como camuflagem.

As moreias recebem o nome de Caramuru do povo indígena brasileiro Tupinambá e foi a alcunha dada por este povo ao português Diogo Álvares Correia, náufrago que viveu sua vida em meio a estes índios.

Em Portugal, as moreias são pescadas para alimentação.

As espécies mais comuns de moreia na costa portuguesa são:

* Moreia-pintada (Gymnothoraz favigenis)

Características:

Moréia

Os peixes desta espécies não possuem nadadeiras ventrais e peitorais. Corpo robusto com formato cilíndrico e alongado, parecido com o de uma cobra. Possuem o dorso com coloração variando do bege ao amarelo-claro com manchas arredondadas marrom-escuro ou mesmo negras espalhadas por toda a extensão do corpo, ventre esbranquiçado. Medem de 50cm a 1,20 m de comprimento.

Ocorrência:

Águas tropicais e subtropicais do Atlântico. Ocorrem em toda a costa brasileira.

Habitat:

Espécie costeira de águas rasas, podendo, entretanto, ser encontrada a profundidades maiores. Vivem em fundos coralinos e rochosos.

Hábitos:

Geralmente solitária, passa o dia entocada, vigiando a redondeza de sua toca. Reage violentamente à aproximação de outros indivíduos que ousem chegar muito perto, abrindo a boca ameaçadoramente e atacando com fortes mordidas o intruso. Normalmente, só sai à noite para caçar, alimentando-se principalmente de peixes, polvos e crustáceos.

Peixe ou cobra?

A Moréia é um peixe. Por causa de seu corpo serpentiforme, ela é comumente confundida com aquele terrível réptil.

Muita gente acredita que a Moréia é agressiva e venenosa, mas não é verdade. A Moréia só ataca quando é perturbada na sua toca. E, mesmo assim, se a vítima xereta for mordida, ela não vai morrer, pois a Moréia não tem veneno. O máximo que pode acontecer é uma alergia, provocada pela sua saliva tóxica.

As moréias pertencem à família dos ápodos, dassificadas em tal por não terem as nadadeiras ventrais ou pélvicas. Não possuem nadadeiras peitorais.

O corpo das moréias é alongado e quase cilíndrico, além de revestido com um muco protetor. Uma longa nadadeira ímpar começa no dorso e termina no ânus, passando pela extremidade da cauda. Essa nadadeira é formada por raios moles e articulados.

Os peixes dessa ordem são ótimos nadadores, que nadam ondulando o corpo e por vezes rastejando e enterrando-se na areia.

As moréias se assemelham fortemente com as serpentes, tanto no modo de se locomover, como no corpo. As moréias podem ser confundidas facilmente com congros, estes que chegam a medir o dobro da moréia.

As moréias são consideradas perigosas pelas suas mordidas, que causam lesões geralmente graves, o que fazem com os dentes agudos. Algumas ainda, além dos dentes, possuem veneno, que inoculam ao morder.

Um exemplo deste perigo é a Muraena helena, com pele de cor amarela intensa ao marrom escuro, manchado de branco sujo.

As moréias são agressivas, cuja intensidade varia de espécie para espécie. Possuem como instinto natural a voracidade.

Os alevinos de moréia trazem grande curiosidade, que no momento da eclosão e durante o período crítico da vida, tornam o aspecto de uma folha vegetal transparente; chamada de leptocéfalo.

As moréias tem uma alimentação essencialmente carnívora, devorando peixes pequenos que venham a passar perto, além de crustáceos, moluscos e alguns invertebrados.

As moréias vivem entre os recifes de corais, e ataca qualquer um que ouse passar em frente à sua toca. O ataque, se dá com uma rapidez fulminante.

A MORÉIA NO AQUÁRIO

As moréias não são recomendadas para aquário, pois devoram peixes que lhe caibam na boca, ou mesmo invertebrados. No entanto, para quem quiser ter um aquário exótico, é uma ótima opção.

Elas são resistentes, vivem bem em aquário pequeno (com excessão da Echidna zebra que necessita de espaço para nadar). E não são tão difíceis de se alimentar, o que pode ser satisfeito com consideráveis pedaços de filé de peixe.

É recomendável que o aquário que as comporte esteja bem tampado, pois algumas chegam a pular para fora. O aquarista também deve tomar cuidado, pois ao abrir a tampa, ela pode se ver agredida e tentar uma reação.

Como companheiros para ela recomendo outras moréias, e não peixes comuns, o que pode vir a dar problemas. Podem ser encontradas em lojas especializadas, às vezes, por encomenda que pode demorar um bom tempo.

Elas podem ser ensinadas a perder sua agressividade o que é difícil e além de tudo exige coragem, muita paciência e muito tempo.

I haven't taken a picture in awhile. My sis pointed out that my belly converges to a point at my belly button. Luckily my belly button is in tack and has yet to pop out. Never realized how much my belly has expanded until I saw this photo. It's amazing how the body changes over a period of 9 months. All in all this pregnancy hasn't really been that bad. The worst part of the pregnancy was the first trimester: the bleeding, morning sickness & nausea.

The most exciting moment was during the 24th-26th week. I couldn't figure out if it was the baby moving or merely gas. But I would feel this slight flutter and slight pain. Eventually I placed my hand on my belly and felt the baby kick. A little life was growing inside of me. My attachment grew even stronger.

One distinguish them by blackpoint on the pectoral, dorsal, pelvic fins and the caudal fin. The body is grey with reflections bronze and the white stomach. Shark viviparous animal (birth of the young already formed sharks), females can carry about ten youngs every two years.

The blacktip shark is endangered by its intensive, commercial and sports peach. He is classified "almost threatened" by the UICN Red List.

Most people associate anglerfish with the large and whacky looking deep-sea fish, but did you know that the Australian shoreline is home to many incredible species!

Pictured here is a Spot-tail Anglerfish, which is found hidden in rubble along the northern Australian coastline. Living up to its name, it has a lure on-top of its eyes to try and attract smaller fish to its mouth.

Instead of swimming, it uses its large pectoral and pelvic fins to walk along the rocky reef. Another interesting fact about this fish is that it is an egg brooder. Egg clusters of up to 650 eggs are attached to the side of the males where they are protected until they hatch!

The natural history shelf.

The large shells are horse clams. I have never found an intact specimen. There is a structural weakness that causes all of them to break in the same general location.

The industrial-sized light bulb was very likely separated from a Japanese fishing boat during the Fukushima tsunami of 2012. It eventually ended its long journey across the Pacific on a beach in southwest Washington.

Looking like a Chanel pillbox hat, a hummingbird's nest rests atop the bulb. A larger and less tidy nest partially obscures the old photo of a Victorian family.

What would those people have thought if they had known they would someday share a shelf with a harbor seal's pelvic bone, the skull of a black-billed murre and a barnacle-encrusted crab carapace?

Fragmentary shells of a type of sea snail line the front of the shelf. Like the horse claims, the snail shells never survive their journey to the beach in one piece. The difference is that the snail shells' broken edges have been worn beautifully smooth by being tumbled endlessly on the sandy seabed. Thanks to the holes, they make great pendants.
