The Galapagos sea lion is a species that primarily breeds in the Galapagos Islands, although some breeding colonies also occur on Isla de la Plata just off of mainland Ecuador. They are one of two types of seal found in Galapagos and are part of the eared seal family – having external ear pinnae. They are not ‘true’ seals, as they are able to rotate their hind flipper under their pelvic girdle and lack the characteristic long, finger-like claws of true seals. The configuration of their pelvic girdle allows them to ‘gallop’ across land, reaching speeds exceeding that of a running person on rocky terrain.

Moray eels can be dangerous. With their large sharp teeth they sometimes inflict serious injuries on divers when the divers come to close, for example with the hand.
To eat, they tear their prey into pieces before eating it. They mainly feed on fish, crustaceans and molluscs, but some species are carnivorous. Moray eels have a second set of jaws that move forward to completely consume their prey.
The moray eels or Muraenidae belong to the order of eels. Like the eels, they also have smooth skin covered with a protective mucus. In some moray eels, this slime is even poisonous! Most species do not have pelvic or pectoral fins. This makes them very similar to snakes. Their body can grow up to two meters in length.
In general, moray eels have very poor eyesight. They usually sit with their long body hidden in a hole and sit with their mouth open. Their mouth opens and closes almost constantly. But they actually make this kind of yawning movement to make their breathing easier. When prey comes too close, they shoot forward and grab it. However, moray eels are most active at night.

Murenen, ook wel moeralen genoemd, kunnen gevaarlijk uit de hoek komen. Met hun grote scherpe tanden brengen ze duikers soms zeer ernstige verwondingen toe als de duiker te dichtbij komt, bijvoorbeeld met de hand. Om te eten scheuren zij hun prooi in stukken alvorens deze naar binnen te werken. Ze voeden zich vooral met vis, schaal- en weekdieren maar sommige soorten zijn vleesetend. Murenen beschikken over een tweede stel kaken die naar voren komen om hun prooi volledig te verorberen.
De murenen of Muraenidae behoren tot de orde van palingachtigen. Net als de palingen beschikken zij ook over een gladde huid bedekt met een beschermend slijm. Bij sommige murenen is dit slijm zelfs giftig! De meeste soorten hebben geen buik- of borstvinnen. Dit maakt dat ze grote gelijkenissen vertonen met de slangen. Hun lichaam kan tot wel twee meter lang worden.
In het algemeen kunnen murenen heel slecht zien. Ze zitten meestal met hun lange lichaam verscholen in een hol en zitten met geopende bek naar buiten. Hun mond gaat bijna constant open en dicht. Maar deze soort gaapbeweging maken ze eigenlijk om hun ademhaling te vergemakkelijken. Wanneer een prooi te dicht in de buurt komt schieten ze naar voren en wordt deze gegrepen. Doch zijn murenen pas het meest actief gedurende de nacht.

Acanthurus lineatus, the lined surgeonfish, is a member of the family Acanthuridae, the surgeonfishes. Other common names include blue banded surgeonfish, blue-lined surgeonfish, clown surgeonfish, pyjama tang, striped surgeonfish, and zebra surgeonfish. This species reaches about 38 centimeters in length. Much of the body has black-edged blue and yellow stripes, and the top of the head is striped with yellow. The belly is grayish. The pectoral fins have darkened rays and the pelvic fins are yellow-brown with black margins. Individuals from around the Philippines vary in coloration. The variegated lizardfish (Synodus variegatus) is a lizardfish of the family Synodontidae found in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, at depths from 4 to 90 m. It can reach a maximum length of 40 cm.
The variegated lizardfish is rounded in cross-section with a broad, moderately flattened head and a large, wide mouth. The jaws protrude equally. Both jaws and all the mouth bones are covered with conical, barbed teeth. The strong, thick pelvic fins serve as props when the fish is resting on the bottom waiting for prey.
The variegated lizardfish varies in color from grey to red[citation needed], with hourglass-shaped markings.

Ídolo Moro
Uno de los peces más difíciles de mantener en un acuario de casa (y muy caros también), para la mayoría de los acuaristas ídolo moro son el pináculo de la afición. Algunos pueden pensar que lo han visto antes, pero estás son probablemente confundidas con otras especies, el Bannerfish (también conocido como el ídolo falso). Con el distintivo de disco comprimida y cuerpos similares, ídolos morisco en bandas de contraste negro, blanco y amarillo, que los hacen parecer muy atractivo para los poseedores del acuario.
El ídolo moro (Zanclus cornutus), única especie del género Zanclus, que a su vez es el único encuadrado en la familia Zanclidae. Es un pez marino del orden Perciformes, distribuido por aguas tropicales y subtropicales de los océanos Índico y Pacífico.
Aparece por primera vez en el registro fósil durante el Eoceno medio, en el Terciario inferior.
Tiene el cuerpo en forma de disco, muy comprimido lateralmente, mandíbula tubular con una pequeña boca conteniendo numerosos dientes largos. Lo más característico de su morfología es que las espinas de la aleta dorsal están alargadas en un filamento similar a un látigo.3 Delante de los ojos tiene unas protuberancias córneas, que dieron el nombre latino a la especie: cornutus, o cornudo.
La coloración base de cabeza y cuerpo es blanca, con 3 franjas verticales negras, la primera y más ancha va desde el nacimiento de la aleta dorsal hasta las aletas pélvicas, la segunda nace en la parte posterior de la dorsal y cubre la parte posterior de la aleta anal, y la tercera cubre la aleta caudal. Tiene una mancha amarilla horizontal en el nacimiento del hocico, y otra, también amarilla, recubre la mayor parte del cuerpo.
Esta especie es muy similar en apariencia a las especies Heniochus acuminatus y Heniochus diphreutes, provocando frecuentes errores de identificación. Las diferencias más fácilmente apreciables son: la ausencia de la mancha amarilla de la parte posterior del cuerpo del Ídolo moro en las especies del género Heniochus; el hocico más estrecho y largo del Z. cornutus, que además tiene una mancha amarilla, bordeada en negro, en su unión con la cabeza, que los Heniochus no tienen; o que los ojos del Ídolo moro están cubiertos por la franja vertical negra, y en los Heniochus no, siendo claramente visibles.

There is a large degree of sexual dimorphism, with males weighing up to four times that of females. The males also have a prominent bump on their forehead, making them easy to distinguish from the females. All members of this species have brown or grey fur, females generally being a lighter shade than males, and newborn pups being chestnut brown. The sea lions have a smooth and streamlined body shape, making them efficient hunters, especially of sardines which are their main prey. They can dive to depths of up to almost 600 m and can stay underwater for over ten minutes. They spend a lot of their time resting on beaches or playing, and are generally inquisitive.
Males tend to hold territories on beaches where females live, as opposed to holding direct harems. The more dominant the male is, the more land he has in his territory, and therefore the more females are available for him to mate with. The bulls aggressively defend these territories from other male rivals or interlopers, and the bulls that don’t manage to acquire a territory containing females tend to form bachelor colonies away from the female haul outs. The mating season usually occurs between July and December, but can differ from island to island. Females come into oestrus three to four weeks after pupping, when they will mate with the males, however, implantation of the fertilised egg is delayed for two months. After the single pup is born, it bonds with its mother for the first week, developing a unique call to distinguish it from the rest. The mother then starts to forage by day and suckle the pup in the evening, until the fifth week when the pup moults its baby coat and begins to feed inshore. Pups are still dependent on their mothers for the first year of their life, being weaned when they reach eleven to twelve months old.

Arothron stellatus is a medium-sized fish which grows up to 120 cm (47 in) in length. Its body is oval shaped, spherical and relatively elongated. The skin is not covered with scales but is prickly. The fish has no pelvic fin and no lateral line. The dorsal fin and the anal fin are small, symmetric, and located at the rear end of the body. The head is large with a short snout that has two pairs of nostrils, and the mouth is terminal with four strong teeth.
The background coloration goes from white to grey, and the body is harmoniously dotted with black spots. The ventral area is usually clearer. The size of the spots is inversely proportional to the size of the fish; thus, a young individual will have large spots and adults of maximal size will have small spots. The juveniles have a yellowish body background coloration with dark stripes. The young adults still have stripes on the ventral area that will turn to spots later, and also some recollection of yellow on the body. Arothron stellatus feeds on benthic invertebrates, sponges, algae, the polyps of corals such as Acropora, crustaceans and mollusks.
This pufferfish is diurnal. It is mainly solitary and defends a territory. Arothron stellatus contains a highly toxic poison, tetrodotoxin, in its ovaries and to a lesser extent its skin and liver, which protects it from voracious predators. It becomes toxic as it eats bacteria that contain the toxin. To ward off potential enemies, they can inflate their bodies by swallowing air or water. (Wikipedia)

Freshwater stingrays live in the Amazon River system and are one of the only rays inhabiting freshwater rather than saltwater. Though docile animals, they are responsible for more injuries to humans each year than any other Amazonian species. These flattened fishes have eyes on the top of their bodies with mouths and gill slits on their undersides. The leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) or paperfish is a species of marine fish, the sole member of its genus. The leaf scorpionfish resembles a dead leaf lying in the water. To enhance this camouflage, it even makes gentle sideways movements in its pelvic area which make it resemble a drifting inert object. It is an ambush predator, waiting until suitable prey, a small fish or shrimp, approaches. Then it slowly moves with its pectoral fins close to the victim. When the leaf scorpionfish is close enough, the prey is sucked in by a sudden opening of its mouth. It eats small crustaceans, fishes, and larvae. This fish grows to an average length of 8 inches, and moves about the reef slowly, rowing with its pectoral, dorsal and pelvic fins, using its caudal fin only when it perceives danger.
The most striking feature of this species its triangular shape in cross section, a feature enforce by a bony carapace.
Its lips are pursed and protuberant, used to direct a blast of water to move sand, revealing small invertebrates such as small worms and crustaceans.
When the fish is stressed its skin releases mucus containing a defensive chemical, ostracitoxin.
More than any other fish on the reef, smooth trunkfish evoke a reaction of "cute!"

So let me start with if you're a mer and you're looking for high-quality scales TIDAL/B&C is the absolute way to go! I can't express how much I love this brand, the creator continues to amaze me.
First, we have an 'oldie' but a gem, Thalassa is a Fitted Mesh Scale gacha with four different color schemes and quite a few different wear options. Here I have on the Body, Pelvic, and Arm scales in the Anemone pallet.
The Face scales are an applier, Genesis and Omega compatible, B&C Scales Freckle in blue.
The transparent materials are the newest addition to my scale addiction, Jewel Body Scales, the transparent layer is a fatpack exclusive but it comes in seven different pallets, with six colors on each pallet. There is a shade for all mer! Best of all, the scales also work with the fitted mesh gills (not pictured here) by TIDAL as well, no more materials cutting off :D That shine is all in world goodness! Many of you know Don Briggs by his phenomenal photography. Through the years, I grew to know the man as my dearest friend, though we never met in person.
Don used to post some of the most gorgeous photos of Maui, and our contact was limited to the usual comments until one day when Don messaged me, asking if I wanted a DSLR camera he wasn't using. I replied that I couldn't afford it, but Don said, "I didn't say anything about money. I have one I'm not using and thought you might like it." That is how the friendship started. Don was generous to a fault, and wanted to help whenever he could. He saw that I had promise, and he wanted to do something about it.
over the years, we began to communicate every day. we had a lot of personality traits in common, and we eventually became best friends, though I always felt he got the short end of the stick!
Through the years, this man had some close encounters with death, being diabetic and having some heart issues, but Don was strong and very independent natured, even driving himself to the hospital once after a stroke! I was beginning to think he would live to be 100. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
A few weeks ago, Don texted me that he'd had a heart attack. Right after that, I fell and broke my pelvic bone. Don used to say we were running a competition with our infirmities! From opposite sides of the country, we were both in hospitals or rehabs, but while I was mending, Don was not. One night he called me in the wee hours of the night, barely able to speak, saying how he was ready to go, and didn't want to live like that, unable to lead the life he wanted to live.
I began communicating with Ed, Don's stepson, who called me yesterday to tell me that Don had passed away at 2:40 A.M. West Coast time, January 9, 2025. I am devastated and heartbroken. Don was way more than a friend. He was family. No one will ever fill that gap, and I will miss him until I die.
This photo was one of Don's selfies that I post processed a long time ago. He said he liked the job I did. I wish I could have been as good of a photographer as he was, but few ever reach that level of professionalism.
I will miss our daily texts, but mostly I will miss this wonderful man that I never got to meet in person, but whom I grew to love dearly. I wish there were words to express what a wonderful person Don was, but there aren't. He would detest this tribute, but he's getting it anyway! Do yourself a favor and stop by Don's photostream. If I were faster with internet research, and even had internet at Brooks Falls, a little Peaches and Herb’s “Shake your Grove Thing’ song from 1978 would have been perfect background music for this moment!
By the bears facial response, I am guessing that shaking your belly underwater feels pretty good on a hot summer’s day. I for one will not be trying this at home as pelvic damage could occur!

The comet or marine betta (Calloplesiops altivelis) is a species of reef-associated tropical marine fish in the family Plesiopidae.
The comet is native in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea, commonly found between 3 and 50 m deep.
Adults are usually found near reefs, and in caves and crevices along drop-offs. The comet is nocturnal by nature, and will hide under ledges and in holes by day. During night time, it leaves its hiding place and swims along the reef searching for food.
Comets are predators, feeding on crustaceans and small fish. They catch their prey by approaching it swimming sideways and then waiting for the prey to try to escape.
Comets possess an eye-like shape which is actually the dorsal fin. When in danger, this fish will poke its head into a hole and expose its tail end, which mimics the head of the moray eel.
The dark brown to black comet can reach a maximum length of 20 cm. The white spots are found on its body, head and fins, except for the median and pelvic fins which have small blue spots.
De oogvlekrifwachter of kortweg rifwachter (Calloplesiops altivelis) is een tropische zeevis uit de familie Plesiopidae.
De oogvlekrifwachter leeft in de Indische Oceaan en de Rode Zee in de buurt van rotsige riffen, holen en spleten, meestal tussen 3 en 50 meter diepte. Overdag houdt de oogvlekrifwachter zich schuil en 's-nachts zwemt de vis langs het rif op zoek naar voedsel. Het is een roofvis die vanuit een schuilplaats zijn prooi vaak zijwaarts besluipt. Het voedsel bestaat vooral uit schaaldieren en kleine vissen.
Komt de oogvlekrifwachter zelf in gevaar dan steekt de vis zijn kop tussen de stenen of duikt met z'n hoofd in het zand en laat dan alleen z'n staart en rugvin zien. Achterop de rugvin zit een grote oogvlek waarmee de kop van een murene wordt geïmiteerd en eventuele rovers worden gefopt.
De donker bruine tot zwarte oogvlekrifwachters bereiken een lengte van maximaal circa 20 centimeter. Honderden witte vlekjes bedekken het lichaam, het hoofd en de vinnen.
