For us, the first day of the New Year was bitterly cold, windy, and snowy. We went out for a drive to escape the feeling of "cabin fever," and spotted this cow walking slowly along a well trodden path to join her sisters at a hay station further afield. She must have have felt some peer pressure to leave the shelter of the barn and venture outside on a day like this. Still, it was lovely in all that white.
Hope your first day of 2018 was at least warmer in heart and the days ahead will be as well! Happy New Year!

Pier Pressure...
We took this shot at the Brant Street Pier, while there a group of young people had gathered on the pier, phones in hand yelling; jump! jump! when suddenly three of their troupe clambered onto the rail and launched themselves, falling haplessly into the water.
Amidst the laughter and general excitement of the crowd, i snapped a few shots in an attempt to catch the ensuing mayhem.
kids tend to be more reckless these days, as they think more about ending up on YouTube than they do about the ending up in the hospital... lucky for them Joseph Brant hospital is just around the corner. .

One from the archives. My old hdr's archive on Flickr isn't complete yet.
This one was taken in London, a couple of years ago. They weren't actually offering him a cigarette, it was a toy-cigarette, but still...
During the return trip of our vacation I made a point to stop by the Valley of Fire outside of Vegas and pick me up some firecrackers and M-60A Salutes! It’s going to be a fun weekend...

Pier Pressure can empty your wallet.
Peer Pressure can empty your life.
I've seen the damage it can do and it makes me sick.
Sign of the times - teenage depression. There’s a silent epidemic happening among our young people. Pressure to look perfect. Be popular. Wear the right designer clothing. Get good grades. Get enough “likes”. Peer pressure. Parent pressure. Life pressure. It’s really tough to be a teenager now, and a lot of them are struggling. Keep a close eye on the young people in your life and keep the lines of communication open.
The words on the wall were written by this young woman and are a genuine reflection of how she feels.
As I am shooting self-portraits, I am realizing that it's very tough. I spent around two hours to get this shot.
I have just entered a PhD program, and I keep wondering whether I should be here or not. Although coursework is frustrating, research is exciting. Let's see what this year has in store.
Peer pressure. It's a mother......
It is something that we have all experienced at one point in our lives. If it was not in middle school, then it was definitely in high school. And for many people, peer pressure can be found years later in the workplace as well.
You're preaching to the choir here. When I hired on the railroad in 1994, peer pressure was everywhere. It could be found in the yard office, crew room, and even in the locomotive cab.
As a young and recently promoted engineer, you want to run a good train and establish a good reputation with the old head conductors. I would do my very best to keep the train at track speed and follow the rules to the best of my abilities at the time.
What surprised me was the peer pressure I received for trying to operate the train in a manner that kept us both out of the poop! A vast majority of the old heads then could care less about doing it right. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard "That's why I have job insurance kid," I would be retired by now!
Over time, I understood how these guys became so jaded. Technology constantly kept whittling away at jobs, from brakemen, flag men, to firemen. And if it wasn't technology, then it was line redundancy. Believe it or not, there was still friction between the Pennsy, Central, and Erie guys in 1994 from the creation of Conrail 18 years earlier!
It is amazing how times have changed since then. Now the peer pressure has been turned the opposite direction. With so much new technology in the locomotive cab, it will be very difficult to not want to do things correctly. After all, the locomotive's event recorder does not lie!
This sign stands adjacent to the pad at the T-Center in Toledo, Ohio. This location probably sees 50-60 trains a day change crews. The Safety Committee erected the sign in hopes of channeling peer pressure in a positive direction. For me, it is a breath of fresh air compared to 25 years ago.
Peer Pressure.
Emmy is the wildest of the "wild things", aka, my grandchildren. She's the youngest, just 5 years old, but extremely "strong willed". I've seen her bring down 2 adults with a remarkable tantrum on the front lawn over who would buckle her into her car seat. If she were a dog she would be a pit bull.
She can be described as "my loving little cuddlebug" or "a holy terror". She can be charming or screaming with a voice that could really shatter glass.
I wonder what grown up Emmy will be. Maybe the dictator of a small third world country or maybe a perfectly lovely woman who thinks for herself and doesn't cave in to anything she doesn't think is right. Time will tell.
We were joined on the enormous boulder (nicknamed Jump Boulder) on the far side (southwest) of Lake Serene by a group of people, three of whom intended to jump into the water with two others photoing the event. Two jumped the 25 feet into the very cold lake fed by snow melt. One was recluctant. He eventually jumped.

Kids, let this be a lesson that it's not because everybody's doing it that it's ok.
"Pff. You call that thing a mech? More like an over-glorified booster seat."
Sometimes your dad just can't afford a mech as big as the other kids'. It wouldn't be so bad if the bullies didn't have the biggest mechs, but they do. Oh well, let's just hope this blue thing can run fast...

so godi brought his holgaroid to the driving range the other day, and pretty much convinced us that pack film is the way to go, if we wanted to keep shooting polaroid.
so i started looking for cameras on ebay, and got this colorpack II for a steal. i also got an automatic 100 which is even cooler, but that hasn't arrived yet.
i'm pretty excited about that, it's a new world to me, and i'm looking forward to shooting pack film. thank you, fuji.
Pluck your eyebrows out so you can draw them back in with a pencil. Pay to have the fat removed from your ass and inject into your chin. Have leaky water balloons embedded into your chest or maybe begin to redefine what "real beauty" truly is.
There is a quest for beauty, those who do not feel they measure up can feel down and depressed. So they use the tools to achieve of what is called beauty.

Cognitive theory (psychology) is the study of how the brain processes data in the formation of beliefs and opinions and hence behavior based on those beliefs and opinions. Examples are such things as voting, financial decisions and social beliefs. Cognitive theory explains how we come to have our opinions and beliefs and why they differ among individuals. “Do not drink the Kool-Aid” , i.e., doing your own research and generally being a bit skeptical of conventional wisdom is the greatest way to combat its influence. A BRIEF ESSAY ABOUT AL GORE
PERHAPS SOME OF US ARE...too critical of Al Gore and it is time to review our sentiments. He served his country in the military; he has had his share of personal tragedies and has been able to deal with them.
He served our nation as the Vice-President for two terms and would have been quite competent to take the helm at any time. He ran a fantastic campaign for President and just when he thought he would be taking the oath of office, all hell broke loose and his dream evaporated. A little pissed, for sure. Nevertheless, I do believe the counts were right.
And when, after all was said and done, he became environmentally inspired and developed a kind of theory about a global warming effect, which in my view is absolute nonsense, and felt it was his duty to make the planet a safer place. He has, in the process of promoting his theories, made one great big bundle of cash, thus relieving any of us taxpayers from ever having to bail out Al Gore. And whom among us would not trade our checking accounts for his.
Thus, I hereby promise to look at Al with a more positive attitude, but I will continue to disbelieve that polar bears are endangered and hope that he will soon learn to accept the truth about the myth of global warming. My admiration for Al, however, might diminish somewhat if my heating and cooling bills double anytime during the next few years.
