Hydrangea paniculata 'Diamond Rouge' WW31 Panicle R1- (Renault, Jean 2014 Gorron, FR) Compact Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 5x4ft., flowers emerge white, then pink, then raspberry red and finallywine red, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed R1 for 22 MONTHS (Lowes,). Planted in 2020.
Rendia' is an upright, well-branched selection of panicle hydrangea that features cone-shaped inflorescences of white, sterile flowers that mature to wine red. According to the marketing tag, it starts color transformation earlier than most panicles.
2020 note: Bought from Lowes at full price of $25: 2 gal pot, First Editions. I selected a plant with a single trunk so I can train as a small tree like plant. First Editions claims it has dark orange foliage in the fall.

Hydrangea paniculata 'STRAWBERRY SUNDAE' 23W28 Panicle V1- (Renault 2015, France) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 5x4ft., Panicles emerge white and mature to strawberry pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW26, In Garden Bed V1 for 3.8 YEARS (Lowes). Planted in 2019.
Missouri Botanical Garden: ‘Rensun’, commonly sold under the trade name of STRAWBERRY SUNDAE, typically grows to only 5’ tall and to 3-4’ wide. Flower panicles (7” by 5”) feature showy sterile flowers which bloom on new growth from mid-summer to fall. Sterile flowers emerge white, change to pink and finally mature to strawberry red, with multicolored flowering (white to strawberry red) occurring in late summer as new flowering stems emerge to join mature flowers. This cultivar is very similar to H. paniculata ‘RENHY’ VANILLA STRAWBERRY (French breeder Jean Renault bred both) except it is much smaller in size. U.S. Plant Patent PP#25,438 issued on April 14, 2015.
2020 note: A little over 1 foot high and 2 feet wide after 323 days in the ground. Panicle hydrangeas seem to do really well in Michigan. This one is projected to be 5x4 feet at maturity. However, you can keep them even smaller by pruning. I have Tardiva in one of my other garden beds and I prune it every year to keep it on the smaller side.

Hydrangea paniculata 'BOBO' WW33 Panicle J2- (Huylenbroeck 2010) Dwarf Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 2-3ft., Flowers gradually acquire pink to light purple tones as they mature, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed J2 for 3.2 YEARS (Bluestone). Planted in 2019.
Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Ilvobo', commonly sold under the trade name of BOBO, is a compact cultivar that typically grows in an upright rounded mound to only 2-3' tall and to 3-4' wide. It is the product of an open pollination in a controlled breeding program that took place in Melle, Belgium in 2003 between Hydrangea paniculata 'Pink Diamond' (female parent) and an unknown Hydrangea paniculata (male parent). 'Ilvobo' is particularly noted for its dwarf/compact mounded shape, free branching habit, early flowering, strong stems, and conical flowering habit. Abundant sterile white flowers bloom early and profusely in large flower panicles (each to 11" long). Strong stiff stems hold the panicles upright with no drooping. Flowers gradually acquire pink to light purple tones as they mature. Flowers typically bloom from July through September. Ovate, serrate, dark green leaves (to 2 1/2” long) produce generally undistinguished fall color.
2020 note: Produced a bloom after a couple of months in the garden last year. Is about 18 inches high and wide after 14 months in the ground. Garden soil in this area is mostly clay. Not sure what kind of trimming I will do with this shrub. Will check out plant structure this winter. If it maintains a mounded ball shape, I may just leave it. So far, I really like the size. Seems at home in the perennial garden.

Hydrangea paniculata 'ZINFIN DOLL' WW39 Panicle J2- (Wood, 2016) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 7ft., Pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Month 7c, In Garden Bed J2 for 5.3 YEARS (Bluestone). Planted in 2017.
Hydrangea paniculata Zinfin Doll® 'SMNHPRZEP' (PP26956, 2016) was developed by Timothy Wood, MI. Selected from an open-pollination of seed parent Hydrangea paniculata 'Little Lamb'. Dense bi-colored blooms emerge white then transition to hot pink to red. Upward-facing blooms on strong stems. Soil acidity does not affect bloom color. A Proven Winners® selection. Good growth in 2 years time. Great fall colors.
2020 note: About 3 feet tall and wide after 3 years in the ground. Needs to be bottom trimmed to be more vase shaped (my preference). Soil in this garden is on the clay side. Seed parent is Little Lamb, which I had but did not survive. Like most of my panicle hydranges, it starts out white and turn pink or red or both. I will probably keep this at a 3-4 foot height.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom' 23W29 Panicle U2- (Peter Zwijnenburg Jr, Netherlands 1990) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 10x8ft., 15in. long sterile florets emerge pale green and mature to bright white to pale pink by early fall, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW28, In Garden Bed U2 for 34 MONTHS (Meijer). Planted in 2020.
Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Phantom' features very large flower heads held on sturdy, straight stems that are not prone to flopping. The terminal, cone-shape, panicle inflorescences can reach up to 15" long and are excellent for fresh cut or dried arrangements. The sterile florets emerge pale green and mature from bright white to pale pink by early fall. Mature specimens can reach up to 10' tall with an equal spread.
Almost Eden: It's quietly whispered among those in the know that this sister seedling to the highly touted Limelight™ may actually be the better of the two, but we'll leave it up to you to decide... Huge clusters of white sterile florets are held above the rich dark green foliage on sturdy upright to arching stems in summer and change to pink and green in fall. A Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merit recipient!
2020 note: good sized potted plant from Meijer in Ann Arbor (Jackson RD). Probably a 2 gallon pot. This one is somewhat taller and wider than most of the recent introductions (this is not a recent intro), so I need to plant it where is will have some room to grow. End of the season sale at 30% off. Tag indicated a height of 10-20 feet, while most web info reported 10 feet at maturety. Purchased in late August, will wait for cooler weather in September to plant. In the greenhouse with the rest of the panicle hydrangeas that get watered daily in this heat.

Hydrangea paniculata 'ZINFIN DOLL' WW33 Panicle J2- (Wood, 2016) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 7ft., Pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Month 7c, In Garden Bed J2 for 5.2 YEARS (Bluestone).

Hydrangea paniculata Little Quick Fire® 'SMHPLQF' (PP25136, 2014) was developed by Timothy D. Wood of Michigan. An open-pollination of Hydrangea paniculata 'Bulk' as the seed parent. As the name implies, it's a dwarf variety ( 3-5 feet tall). It blooms about one month before other hydrangeas. White flowers turn pink as summer progresses. Blooms on new wood. Flower color is not affected by soil pH. A Proven Winners® selection. Paniculata hydrangeas are the most cold hardy (Zone 3-8). Native to Asia. Stiff upright branches do not splay. Flowers are more cone-shaped rather than ball-shaped.

Planted in 2019.
Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Jane', commonly sold under the trade name of LITTLE LIME, is a compact cultivar that typically grows in an upright rounded mound to 3-5' tall and as wide. It is the product of an open pollination in a planned breeding program that took place in Grand Haven, Michigan in August of 2005 between Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight Variegated' (female parent) and an unknown selection of Hydrangea paniculata (male parent). 'Jane' is particularly noted for its large mophead type inflorescences (panicles to 5" tall by 4" wide), with sterile flowers emerging soft light green but maturing to pink and burgundy in fall. Additional features of interest include compact, upright-mounded shape, free branching habit and strong stems which hold the panicles upright with no drooping. Flowers typically bloom from July through September. Ovate, serrulate, dark green leaves (to 2 1/2” long) are attractive during the growing season, but produce generally undistinguished fall color. Flower panicles may be cut for fresh arrangements or for drying, or may be left on the plant where they often persist into winter. U. S. Plant Patent PP22,330 was issued on December 13, 2011.
2020 notes: It is 16 inches tall and has an oblong shape measuring 16 inches wide and 30 inches long. I have not trimmed it yet, but will probably make it more ball shaped. Planted one year ago. Attractive lime green panicles. This was purchased in a 4x4 inch plantable pot and is doing really well after a year in the ground. I did remove the pot before I planted, not a big fan of plantable pots.

Michael Dirr: ‘Tardiva’ extends the flowering season into late August and September (October and November on Nantucket). The inflorescences are a mixture of fertile and sterile flowers. Sterile flowers are composed of primarily 4 sepals. Depending on weather conditions (cooler), the sepals turn pinkish. Just developing inflorescences on 25 June 2003, at JC Raulston Arboretum. This selection has gained momentum in the nursery and landscape trades.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' was introduced by Haworth-Booth from Chenaulfs nursery, and given an Award of Merit by the RHS in 1966. It is a “Big Box” item and one of the most popular Panicle hydrangeas in the US. It is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub (or small tree) which grows 8-12' tall. Flowers are white, lightly tinged with pink/cream with age. Flowers on new wood and prunning should be done prior to new growth. 'Tardiva' is similar to H. Paniculata 'Floribunda'. I have kept this trimmed small. Severe trim in 2021.
2022 note: Basically cut to ground level last year. Seems to be recovering.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Little Quick Fire' 23W28 Panicle S1- (Wood, 2014 MI) Dwarf Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 3-5ft., White flowers turn pink as summer progresses, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW28, In Garden Bed S1 for 34 MONTHS (Lowes). Planted in 2020.

Per Dirr "Hydrangea paniculata, 'HYPMAD II' has numerous white inflorescences that mature to rose-pink. The sepals turn outward from the inflorescences at maturity resulting in a frilly, lacy appearance. The habit is compact, dense, broad-mounded, 130 cm by 170 cm in 4-years at Athens, Ga. The dark green leaves are insect and disease resistant."

Hydrangea paniculata 'Little Lime' WW35 Panicle S2- (Wood, 2011) Compact Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 3-5ft., Sterile flowers emerging soft light green but maturing to pink and burgundy in fall, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed S2 for 3.2 YEARS (Bluestone).

Hydrangea paniculata 'BOBO' 23W29 Panicle J2- (Huylenbroeck 2010) Dwarf Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 2-3ft., Flowers gradually acquire pink to light purple tones as they mature, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW27, In Garden Bed J2 for 4.1 YEARS (Bluestone).

Hydrangea paniculata 'STRAWBERRY SUNDAE' 23W29 Panicle T3- (Renault 2015) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 5x4ft., Panicles emerge white and mature to strawberry pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW26, In Garden Bed T3 for 4.8 YEARS (Lowes). Planted in 2018.
2020 note: 3 feet high and 4 feet wide after 23 months in the ground. Really pleased so far with this shrub.
