The NYC DOT Art Program partnered with 7Train Murals and the Long Island City Partnership to present, “Pedestrian Patterns,” a 750 foot long mural on the Thomson Avenue Bridge located between Skillman Avenue and 44th Drive in Long Island City, Queens. Inspired by the prints found on the soles of running sneakers, the design illuminates the commute New York City residents make each day to and from their various destinations. Using 25 colors over a 33 panel span, the design moves and conforms to the architecture of the bridge as it transitions from bright colors to camouflaged configurations. In 2013, artist Mark Salinas, founded 7Train Murals, a community-driven mural and arts organization, in efforts to “beautify vacant and vandalized public spaces in neighborhoods around the 7 train line in Queens.” Part of 7Train’s mission is to incorporate volunteers, both experienced and first-time painters, into the production and maintenance of the mural.
