Everybody's dog photos make me nostalgic -- maudlin enough to take
photos like this. He was the best dog ever. I would grab him by the
fangs and we would play tug of war. If I was sitting on a chair with
wheels, I'd be whipped across the room. He had a reportoire of noises
that were speechlike in their variation. Somebody discarded him. He
was scheduled for death and I took him in. I was so lucky that day.

Friday opened the River Sculpture Festival at the French Broad Park off of Amboy Road and like last year there are some fantastic sculptures and constructions in the park.

Walked into a dark tomb entrance and saw a chink of light at the back: this is what it was- really striking and beautiful
Rocky is a friendly, playful puppy who is going to be a large dog. He likes people, other dogs, and toys. He loves to run, grab a toy, shake it and then bring it back to his bed. He follows his foster mom around just in case she has time to play. He's catching on to this crate thing and sleeps through the night. He is only three months old.
This was a lovely church hidden away from the main harbour behind the shops. I really liked the way it was set on a hill on its own.

This is one of several shots that I've taken years ago, before I really had to make a living with a camera, so my perspective in what is, after all, a very personal and instinctive creative experience, handn't been warped by someone elses' opinion of what was necessary to make money. It's taken in one of my favorite areas in New York City, Wall Street.
I've been talking with an old friend, who is also an art director in Berlin about putting some of my older and latest work together in a show, and what became apparent was the need for some sort of common theme or thread.
There's a great line in Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" about all art ultimately coming down to some balance of "irony and pathos". I think that, looking back and forward that that is not only the theme of my photography but of my life as well.
Interpretation: "Dieses Schwarzweißfoto zeigt die Frankfurter Oderpromenade nicht als Ort der Begegnung, sondern als Zone des Innehaltens. Es verweigert Pathos und touristische Lesbarkeit und insistiert stattdessen auf einer stillen, beinahe spröden Gegenwart.
Im rechten Vordergrund steht eine ältere Frau mit grauen Haaren, nach vorn geneigt, der Blick gesenkt. Ihre Haltung wirkt schwer, nicht beiläufig. Sie ist nicht Flaneurin, sondern Trägerin von Zeit. Entscheidend ist, dass sie nicht über den Fluss blickt, nicht hinüber nach Słubice. Die Grenze erscheint hier nicht als Sehnsuchtslinie, sondern als unbeachteter Hintergrund.
Links sitzt eine weiße Taube. Ihr Symbolgehalt – Frieden, Versöhnung – ist bekannt und gerade deshalb problematisch. Während die Frau in Bewegung und leicht unscharf ist, bleibt das Symbol ruhig und klar. Das Bild kehrt damit die Ordnung um: Das Zeichen ist stabil, der Mensch fragil. Frieden wirkt leicht behauptet, Leben dagegen mühsam gelebt.
Der Fluss bildet die Mittelachse der Komposition. Er ist weder dramatisch noch idyllisch, sondern funktional: eine Trennlinie ohne Inszenierung. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite reihen sich anonyme Wohnblöcke, austauschbar und entpersonalisiert. Frankfurt (Oder) und Słubice erscheinen nicht als Dialog, sondern als stilles Nebeneinander, verbunden durch Wasser, getrennt durch Erfahrung.
Das Schwarzweiß dient nicht der Nostalgie, sondern der Zuspitzung. Es entzieht dem Bild jede versöhnende Farbe und verleiht ihm einen dokumentarischen, fast archivarischen Charakter. Die Körnung verstärkt den Eindruck, dass hier kein Moment festgehalten wird, sondern ein Zustand.
Politisch ist das Foto gerade durch seine Zurückhaltung. Es zeigt keine Grenze, keine Flagge, keinen Übergang – und macht genau dadurch deutlich, dass Grenzen fortbestehen, auch wenn sie unsichtbar geworden sind. Europa erscheint hier nicht als Projekt, sondern als gegebenes Umfeld, das man nicht mehr kommentiert, sondern bewohnt."

Weds 19/1/00. Steps lead down to a multi-chambered sunken sanctuary honouring a Jewish woman whose 7 children were martyred by one of the Selucide kings of Palestine. Frescoes are a mess, first vandalised by the Crusaders. Complex MAY have been the synagogue of Roman Paphos and a pagan shrine before that.
