After inputs about possible terror attack on the Pakistan side of the Attari-Wagah border around Independence Day, the Border Security Force (BSF) sounded an alert here on Wednesday.

Besides stepping up security in the area, the BSF is deploying more personnel to keep vigil during the evening retreat ceremony.

“We are already extra vigilant ahead of Independence Day. After intelligence inputs from Pakistan, we have sounded an operational alert on Wednesday itself. We have also intensified checking of people visiting the daily ceremony,” said a senior BSF official.

Pakistan’s National Counter Terrorism Authority on Tuesday had written to the Punjab (Pak) home secretary about a terror outfit’s plan to target the parade at Wagah between August 13 and 15.

A suicide blast after the evening retreat had killed at least 60 Pakistan nationals in 2014.

Inspector general (IG, border range) NK Arora along with Pathankot senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rakesh Kaushal reviewed security at border villages of the district on Wednesday. After joining his new assignment, Arora is likely to meet BSF officials in his visit to the border posts, said sources.

Talking to HT, SSP Kaushal said Pathankot will soon have a company of the BSF in addition to seven companies of the Punjab Armed Police already deployed here. “The heightened security will help avert infiltration bids in the border district,” he said.

The SSP said police personnel are keeping a close eye on vehicles entering the state from neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir as well.

PATHANKOT JULY 1946.

The story of this picture: These were the men of the Tank Recovery section of The REME.

The Main cause of the recovery of tanks was the killing of the occupants, the most common of which was the injection of Grenades into the body of the tank, this meant, the killing of all of the occupants, the bodies were often, turned to jelly by the explosion/s, these men, brought back the tanks, cleaned and repaired them and fresh troops were sent out, often many times over, the partition of Pakistan was a dirty war, some would say, after all these years it still is.

Gurdaspur, August 4 -The police have registered a rape case against SP Salwinder Singh after the victim’s husband filed a complaint on the CM’s online sangat darshan seeking action against the officer.

The SP had shot to infamy after a group of terrorists had kidnapped him nearly 30 hours before they stomed Pathankot Air Force station on January 2.

The case was registered after Pathankot SP (H) GS Khurana conducted a probe in the case. The DIG (Border), Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, had received a complaint from the Director, Bureau of Investigation.

An internal inquiry is being conducted by IG Gurpreet Kaur Deo into the sexual harassment charges levelled against him by Gurdaspur-based women police personnel.

SSP Jagdeep Singh Hundal said a case under Section 376- C (rape by a public servant after taking advantage of his official position) of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act had been made out against Salwinder. The SP could face a jail term of seven years for the rape offence if convicted.

“We hope to arrest him soon,” he added.

The complainant is a resident of Geeta Bhawan road, Gurdaspur. Sources reveal that the husband told the inquiry officer that Salwinder Singh was probing a criminal case registered against him (the husband) following which the SP regularly visited their house. On one such visit, the SP asked the victim to pay Rs 50,000 and also pressurised her to develop physical intimacy with him if she wanted her husband to be exonerated in the case.

Tuesday

Today it actually started to feel like we're on holiday. We were so late getting up that we almost missed the end of breakfast (10:30am). After arranging the afternoon's tour and checking on the train tickets, we got the checkout time (12:00) extended by a couple of hours and lounged around a bit. The Connaught (http://www.connaughthoteldelhi.com) has certainly provided a pleasant start to our trip - it's nothing special, but the location is good, the room was comfortable, the service was good, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was relaxed and the travel desk was run by RBS Travel, whom we would never have known about if we hadn't stayed here. Even if you don't stay at the Cannaught, RBS are worth getting in touch with (See yesterday's blog post).

This afternoon we visited the Baha'i House of Worship - it's a really impressive piece of modern architecture that looks like a group of young Sydney Opera Houses sitting in a circle!

We then went to the Qutb Complex where stands the Qutb Minar, India's tallest building, built in 1193 to announce the arrival of muslim rule (It's amazing check out my pictures on flickr! when I get back). The mosque beside it is a curious mixture of Hindu Jain and early Islamic architecture, as most of the masonry was taken from other temples that had been raised to the ground.

We're now on the overnight train to Pathankot (well it actually goes to Kashmir, but hopefully we'll get off in time - save Kashmir for another day), so we can go and relax for a few days in Dharmashala. At some point I'll post some of the pictures I've been taking with the proper cameras on flickr! (probably when we get home).
