Was what I was thinking when I shot this (well no, I was actually thinking oh god I'm out of breath, the train is coming got to change lenses, shit shit shit....) Normally when I think of India I think of cows, burning trash and of course ALCO's. But there truly are beautiful places throughout the subcontinent and the Kangra Valley was truly exceptional. The Kangra narrow gauge railway runs from Pathankot deep into the hill country. East of the city of Kangra the scenery gets truly spectacular as the line skirts the edges of the Himalyans with tall peaks forming a background that made me feel like I was in the Alps. Here the morning service 52471 to Jodinagar heads east near Palampur. The semaphore is not for train control but rather indicates if the upcoming level crossing is closed and is activated by the crossing attendant.

Train 52468 heads south between Kangra Mandir and Kangra station towards Pathankot on a beautiful November evening. While the light was quite nice its too bad the standard evening dust has all but obscured what would be a great view of the Himalaya's in the background. For more pics from this day click here:

After a journey over over 4 hours, both train crew and passengers were well ready to take refreshments at Kangra station. The 07:00 Pathankot Junction to Baijnath Paprola in the care of ZDM-3 190 takes a break as the station refreshments kiosk does brisk business towards the rear of the train.

Baijnath is famous for its 13th-century temple dedicated to Shiva as Vaidyanath, ‘the Lord of physicians’. Originally known as Kiragrama, the town lies on the Pathankot-Mandi highway (National Highway No. 20) almost midway between Kangra and Mandi. The present name Baijnath became popular after the name of the temple. The town is located on the left bank of the river Binwa, a corrupt form of ancient Binduka, a tributary of river Beas.

The Baijnath temple has been continuously under worship ever since its construction in 1204 A.D. The two long inscriptions in the porch of the temple indicate that a temple of Shiva existed on the spot even before the present one was constructed. The present temple is a beautiful example of the early medieval north Indian Temple architecture known as Nagara style of temples. The Svayambhu form of Sivalinga is enshrined in the sanctum of the temple that has five projections on each side and is surmounted with a tall curvilinear Shikhara. The entrance to sanctum is through a vestibule that has a large square "Mandapa" in front with two massive balconies one each in north and south. There is a small porch in front of the mandapa hall that rests on four pillars in the front preceded by an idol of "Nandi", the bull, in a small pillared shrine. The whole temple is enclosed by a high wall with entrances in the south and north. The outer walls of the temple have several niches with images of gods and goddesses. Numerous images are also fixed or carved in the walls. The outer doorway in the porch as also the inner doorway leading to the sanctum of the temple are also studded with a large number of images of great beauty and iconographic importance. Some of them are very rare to be found elsewhere.

The temple attracts a large number of tourists and pilgrims from all over India and abroad throughout the year. Special prayers are offered in the morning and evening every day besides on special occasions and during festive seasons. Makara Sankranti, Maha Shivaratri, Vaisakha Sankranti, Shravana Mondays, etc. are celebrated with great zeal and splendour. A five-day state level function is held here on Maha Shivratri every year.

ZDM4A No. 232 about to depart from Baijnath Paprola with train 52476 16h30 express to Pathankot on 18th April 2019.

On that day we are heading towards Manali from Shimla and taking the bypass route through Mandi ! Time was afternoon ! We took our lunch in a Himachali restaurant & took this snap just from the backyard of that restaurant ! One can see the hilly river, 'Beas' flowing down & the town at a glance !

More about 'Mandi' : Mandi formerly known as Mandav Nagar, also known as Sahor (Tibetan: Zahor), is a major city and a municipal council in Mandi District in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated 153 kilometres (95 mile) north of state capital, Shimla. Located in the north-west Himalayas at an average altitude of 1,044 metres. The city of Mandi, experiences pleasant summers and cold winters. It serves as the headquarters of Mandi District and zonal Headquarters of central zone including Districts namely Kullu, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur. As a tourist place, Mandi is often referred to as 'Varanasi of Hills' or 'Choti Kashi' or 'Kashi of Himachal'. People of Mandi proudly boast that while Benaras (Kashi) has 80 temples, Mandi has 81.

Mandi is built on the banks of the Beas River, at the confluence of the Suketi Khad stream. Sikandar Dhar, Ghugar Dhar and Dhar Kot are some of the prominent hills and mountains found near the city. Mandi is a bowl shaped table land on the banks of river Beas, surrounded by the high hill ranges of Gandharv Hills, Motipur Dhar, Rehra Dhar and Tarna Hill. Two small rivulets, Suketi Khad and Skodhi Khad join River Beas.
