Geeks 'n' wireless -- I changed all my non-https passwords to "barcamp" before arriving, then changed them back to something more secure after Bar Camp was over.

For higher security, one could use an https proxy service, like proxify or anonymizer (assuming you trust them with your passwords! :-).

Of course, the folks you really have to worry about are the ones that sniff your passwords but don't tell you they did it. Jake was at least nice enough to say you'd been hacked.

Ever since we introduced the PWJDM Aluminum lug nuts, we have been bombarded with requests for a lower cost solution with some security. Our answer to the call is simple… the PWJDM Ultra-lite Micro Locking Lug Nuts… available in both 12x1.5 and 12x1.25 and only offered in BLACK.

We are offering these all because certain people want them. My opinion regarding wheel security… if a punk ass thief wants your wheels bad enough, he’ll find a way… and if you feel more secure resting at night knowing you have locking lug nuts, here you go! The security is moderate since you would need a key to unlock these. Not every thief would have such a key handy. Now if you want real security, go buy a pit bull and tie him to your wheels. You would definitely need to shop else where since the only thing we carry with a heartbeat are sluts. We’re not selling those as of yet. We’re keeping them around so we can “train” them from time to time.

Anyhow, the PWJDM Ultra-lite Micro Locking Lug Nuts comes with a “PWJDM P-circle” logo individually printed on the top so the whole world can see which company you support. Made of tempered steel, and treated with a highly corrosion resistant finish that can withstand the high temperatures generated from using your brakes all the time. This is particularly important all because I’ve seen too many lug nuts just fade to crap after a few months of use. Weighing only 32grams each… these weigh hardly nothing for all you weight reduction fanatics out there. I think the air you breathe every hour weighs more than these. No joke, these are the lightest steel lug nuts I have ever seen.

- Honda

- Acura

This is a close up of my screen. The code is from a user authentication module I am working on. I decided to zoom in on it like this in immitation of movie directors who like this technique to show, in a fit of incredulity, that computer security, or computing in general, is beyond the reach of ordinary humans.

As a subpoint, this photograph is also a depiction the statement that "security through obscurity" is a flawed argument.

Password JDM Billet Aluminum Flashlight with hand engraved Tecnocraft logo by Engraving Artist Shawn Lisjack (Exotic Engravings).

To create the stencil, I printed out my WEP password and carefully cut out the characters, minding the counters, and lightly spray-mounted it to the painting.

Maybe I'm getting old and crotchy - maybe I've been on the Web too long (same year as Zeldman, although you don't see ME bragging about it per se). But basic user interface design mistakes really, really get my goat when the company should know better.

Ok, so when Yahoo buys all these great startups (upcoming and Flickr, both of which I adore) they tend to slap the Yahoo Framework on top, and that inevitably means something will be a little 'off' - kind of like an outfit you find at Ross Dress for Less. I digress. Anyway, 2 security questions - fine, whatever, that's more than my bank uses for online transactions, but whatever, I'll do it. Ok, no categorization of the questions provided - fine, I'll look past that. I tried to pick something easy for a password retrieval - hmm, the two towns where my parents were born, and I literally had to spend an extra couple of minutes getting the damn thing to work. Why am I creating my own question here? Why did Yahoo decide to spend extra time styling the CSS of the boxes, but don't perform simple interaction design on basic Web forms to say, 'oh, is this too many steps for our users to go through'? Why, Yahoo, why?

This is the Web - the more time you're making people have to stop and read detailed instructions or second guess themselves or wonder how to do something, the more likely they'll abandon you for your competition (like Google, which does seem to get Basic UI Design 101 for Forms.

Perhaps I'm tough on SaaS based companies in general, but I don't hear a reasonable reason why Yahoo (and other services) don't correct this basic stuff, and I run into it every single time I use a Yahoo Framework based service - and I'm tired of it. This is why I use Central Desktop and would rather pay for it rather than a free Yahoo Groups - because I'd rather avoid the Yahoo Headache.

Then again, why would they change - they have a captive audience who are dependent on their free services and don't think they deserve basic UI stuff, and users blame themselves when something goes wrong when it's actually the company's lack of caring. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm sure there are parts of Yahoo I do like (upcoming, Flickr, etc.). The basic UI irritation is beyond annoying, though.
