Pasadena, California

Looks like Pasadena is finally done with Rapid Rail. I was driving through the city when I spotted this unit collecting recycling in the area. First one I've seen so not sure how many they bought total. I'm guessing these replaced the last Curbtenders that the city owned.

Castle Green Hotel in Pasadena (1887) on the corner of Raymond and Green, was expanded in 1899. These are now condos.

While documenting this event I was struck by how often the participating artists, covered in chalk dust, almost became part of the artwork itself.

In July 2004, Pasadena City Hall was vacated for a three-year overhaul of the structure, including a complete earthquake retrofit. The entire building was lifted off its foundation, equipped with structural base isolators and given a new foundation.

Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States 18 km northeast of downtown Los Angeles. It is the most populous city and the primary cultural center of the San Gabriel Valley. Old Pasadena is the city's original commercial district. Pasadena is also home to many scientific, educational, and cultural institutions. The original inhabitants of Pasadena and surrounding areas were members of the Native American Hahamog-na tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation. In 1821, Mexico became independent of Spain and California came under control of the Mexican government. On June 19 1886 Pasadena was incorporated and becoming one of the first cities to be incorporated in what is now Los Angeles County, following the city of Los Angeles.

Pasadena City Hall is the historic city hall of Pasadena, California, United States. Located at 100 North Garfield Avenue, City Hall was designed by John Bakewell & Arthur Brown and completed in 1927. It combines elements of both Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture, and is a significant architectural example of the City Beautiful movement of the 1920s. It measures 110 m and rises 6 stories. There are over 235 rooms and passageways that cover over 16,000 m2. The defining dome, located above the west entrance, is 7.9 m tall and 16 m in diameter. On 28 July 1980 the Civic Center District, including Pasadena City Hall, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pasadena – miasto w hrabstwie Los Angeles, stanie Kalifornia, w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Jest oddalona o 18 kilometrów od centrum Los Angeles. Spotted this beast on the way home today. While I'm no fan of Pasadena's residential fleet, the commercial trucks that I've seen over the years are some of the coolest and most diverse. Unfortunately, they are hard to come across and I'm not even sure what else they still run or how many FLs they have total. Definitely will look into it though.

materials: bronze

site: Centennial Square, Pasadena, CA

commissioned by: Pasadena Robinson Memorial Board

Baseball hero Jackie Robinson and his brother, Olympic great Mack Robinson, are memorialized in two monumental bronze portrait heads sited across from City Hall in their hometown of Pasadena. A goal of the project was to evoke an appreciation of their contributions beyond the athletic sphere.

Jackie looks toward the east, past City Hall, where he made is mark breaking the color barrier in professional baseball and became a successful businessman.

Mack looks directly at the front doors of City Hall where he spent his life after the Olympics working directly for the city in many capacities.

From afar the heads are perceived as traditional likenesses. As one draws nearer, however, it becomes apparent that text and bas relief imagery are embedded in their hair, allowing multiple allusions to their accomplishments in politics and community service, as well as sports.

Suspended inside each head is a copy of a cd-rom on their lives, a spin-off/companion project to the memorial.
