Kyabuyorwa environmental conservation association - KECA is a group of five youths who were unfortunate to complete their education. . The group was founded in early 2016 with the intention of creating employment through agriculture. Each of us inherited an equivalent of about five acres of land from our parents. When we started in 2016, each of us started by donating an acre of land where we planted Eucalyptus trees. After a year and a half now, we have realized that though the trees are conserving the environment, they will take about 10 years above to generate income for us and that can only happen when we cut them down which amounts to environmental degradation hence taking us back to square 1. Secondly, these trees don’t allow any inter-cropping and so the land they occupy cannot be used for food production. We have hence decided to devise means of generating income through agriculture while conserving the environment. The group is now focused mainly on coffee farming. We have each set aside an acre of land making a total of five acres of land and we are planning to plant two thousand five hundred (2500) coffee seedlings in October this year and we have planned a nursery bed to have our goal achieved. We decided to focus on coffee because it’s easy to manage since we have been managing our parents coffee shambas from the time we were young to date. Coffee is highly profitable since we expect to harvest seven thousand (7000) kilograms of coffee per season of which it will be twice in a single year and each Kilogram is expected at seven thousand shillings to ten thousand shillings thus making a total of fifty two millions on average per harvest. Coffee allows for mixed cropping and we expect to be using our coffee garden to plant seasonal crops like beans, Ground nuts, Vegetables, Pumpkins, Maize etc. hence generating food as our coffee continues to grow. Coffee takes about 2 years to start harvesting and you don’t need to cut down the trees to harvest. You only pick the fruits and the trees continue growing.
