Papyrus is a plant found in wetlands in most of Africa (3 to 5 metres high), consisting of a triangular stem with star-shaped rays at the top, which form the umbel. The rays are jade green in colour, long, thin and persistent. Some umbels are fertile, bearing brown spikelets for sexual reproduction. Others are sterile and contribute to photosynthesis, which ensures growth. In ancient Egypt, papyrus was used to make a form of paper also known as papyrus, and its fibres were also used to make boats. Papyrus pirogues are still being made today, as I saw when travelling in Ethiopia: the tankwas on Lake Tana, where the Blue Nile has its source.

The papyrus is a tall grassy sage of the Nile Valley. We have this plant growing in our backyard and my goal was to make this plant look like modern art. I chose to focus in on one green grassy leaf with a bokeh background. Hope you like it because this is not my usual capture.

Papyrus is a thick paper-like material produced from the pith of the papyrus plant, Cyperus papyrus, a wetland sedge that was once abundant in the Nile Delta of Egypt. Papyrus usually grows 2–3 meters (5–9 ft) tall, although it can reach 5 meters (15 ft). Papyrus is first known to have been used in ancient Egypt (at least as far back as the First dynasty), but it was also used throughout the Mediterranean region. Ancient Egypt used this plant for boats, mattresses, mats and paper.

About this photo:

This is a macro shot of hieroglyphs on papyrus at the University of Penn's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

About the process:

I increased the contrast by creating a B&W image with the channel mixer, in which I brightened the red level and darkened the blue. Then I overlaid the B&W on top of the original.
