MAZAR-E SHARIF, 11 November 2016 - Solar power is growing in popularity in Afghanistan.

With shortages of electric power from the grid, increasing demand for electricity and an abundance of sunlight, solar energy seems like an attractive option for many people.

President Bill Clinton and a panel of experts convened October 5 at Georgetown University to discuss the “common good,” a progressive vision for America and the world championed by the Center for American Progress and other allies.

The common good, as both a philosophical ideal and approach to governing, has a rich history in the civic strands of American thought and in the values and principles of the U.S. Constitution. It is also a powerful theme in the social teachings of many major faith traditions. In both the civic and faith realms, a commitment to the common good means pursuing policies and community actions that benefit all individuals and balance self-interest with the needs of the entire society. It recognizes that government -- while not the only tool -- is essential for helping people pursue their dreams, and that the business, labor, faith and NGO communities play a critical role as well.

The common good approach to politics represents a clear break with the radical individualism, corruption and greed that define contemporary American life. It marks the end of a politics that leaves people to rise and fall on their own.

Panel of St. Peter 10thc.

Leaving Elkstone, I planned to drive to Duntisbourne Rouse, a distance of 12 miles. Easy, I thought. However, It soon proved to be anything but. I turned off of the main road, not far from Cirencester, and followed the signs to Duntisbourne. The route took me down a narrow lane and into the village of Daglingworth. From there I proceeded through the beautiful Duntisbourne valley. I was enjoying the scenery very much, but pretty soon I realised that I must have missed my target. There are four villages called Duntisbourne - Leer, Rouse, Middle and Abbotts, and I had driven through all of them, and was soon heading back towards the main road. I decided to do another loop, and drove back to Daglingworth.

The village seemed deserted this particular Saturday afternoon, but I spied a man cutting a grass verge some way down a side street. I decided to ask for directions and headed towards him. He turned out to be a very nice bloke, and gave me straightforward instructions on how to get to Duntisbourne Rouse church. He then mentioned that the local church was just around the corner, and that it was ancient, and had some interesting Saxon carvings. So I decided to have a look seeing as I was in the area.

I parked outside the church and got chatting to a charming local lady who was tending to the churchyard. I told her I was from Essex, she said that she had lived in the village all her life. Her late husband had been the sexton, a task now performed by her son, and that she had not travelled much, and didn't know exactly where Essex was. I asked her if she had ever watched TOWIE, but she looked at me quizzically and said no - with a slight smile on her lips. Shut the front door! I thought to myself. She then told me that the church door was heavy and tended to stick, and invited me to look inside.

This area of Gloucestershire is particularly rich in ancient churches which have Saxon or Norman fabric. My guidebook for Elkstone church mentions that there are 30 or more in an area of no more than 10 square miles. Daglingworth is a prominent member of this group. The dedication is unusual, although again locally there are seven churches called Holy Rood or Holy Cross. From the outside, the church doesn't look all that ancient, the tower is 15thc. and the windows were also renewed in that period. But on closer inspection, the cornerstones are typical Saxon long and short work (stones laid alternately flat and upright). And the door inside the porch is of the round arched Saxon type, and has a sundial of the same period (10thc.) above it. The interior is light and airy, with a norman arcade to the north, a nice 15thc. font and a saxon chancel arch. However, the real jewels of this church are the four Saxon sculptures, which were rediscovered in 1850 during restoration work. They are now mounted on the walls. The stripped down, linear plainess of these sculptures, gives them an almost modern look. This is the type of primative art that inspired Epstein, Eric Gill and Henry Moore in the 1920's & 30's.

I was pleased that I had taken the advise of a stranger and had a look at this church, it was very rewarding.

This panel is located under the helm station and above the hanging clothes locker. It features 17 toggle switches each with a blue LED light indicating that the switch is on. Today, I have 11 circuits defined thus have 6 spares for the inevitable circuit creep. Seadog labels were used.

The panel is covered with Maple burl veneer to match the same material on the helm station. Instead of applying contact cement, I coated the plywood backer board and the back side of the veneer with Titebond glue allowing the pieces to dry to the touch. I then positioned the veneer on the plywood, covered it with brown paper and moved a clothes iron (set on high) over the protective paper thus heating the glue which became tacky again. The glue cooled and the veneer is fastened tight and finished off with four coats of gloss varnish.

In the spirit of my boat’s theme, I endeavor to keep things looking vintage and simple.

Safeguard Symposium Ministerial Panel held at the Vienna Rathaus, Austria. 1 November 2022

At an event in connection to the Symposium on International Safeguards 2022 a high-level panel convened at the historic Vienna City Hall on 1 November 2022, hosted by the Mayor of Vienna and sponsored by the Nuclear Threat Initiative. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi was joined on the panel by HE Haavisto, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Luis Javier Campuzano Piña, Resident Representative to the IAEA, Permanent Mission of the United Mexican States; Ambassador Susan Eckey, Resident Representative to the IAEA, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Norway; and Mr. Geoffrey Shaw, Director General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office. Norway received the first IAEA inspection in 1962; Mexico concluded the first safeguards agreement applied to all of a country’s nuclear activities in 1968; Finland brought into force the first CSA in connection with the Treaty on the non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 1972; and the first AP entered into force for Australia in 1997.

This weekend the Mrs and I decided to try another Pintrest hit. E backed it up by watching Youtube videos, sorry I do not remember from who. We built a wood shed from pallets and a cattle panel. We have made things using tee poses and pallets in the past (wind breaks for the bee hives and the compost bin). This just added a roof and a floor.

Disclaimer I cheated! I work somewhere that has a sheet metal shop so I can get a few pallets that are 4 x 8 feet. The one we used for the floor has Oak 4x4s as the runners. The sides are much thinner and lighter (like half the weight).

We did have to add slats (from other pallets) because the ones on the sheet metal pallets are too far apart for the cut fire wood.

We simply laid out the floor where we wanted it. I should have leveled it I am sure but I did not. It is directly ion the ground. The ground in this spot has a layer of gravel but is still softish.

Determined where the walls would be and drove in 2 tee posts. One about 10 inchs to a foot from where the ends of the walls will be. And dropped the side pallets over the posts, so the posts go into the cavity where the forks from the tow motor would go.

We then measured and determined that we were going to need 2 cattle panels. They are 50 inches wide so there would be a slight overlap We can wire tie (zip tie ) them together for added strength if needed.

We purchased 2 cattle panels and got them home. We then measured the placement of the center runners and removed a few of the sections so that the panel would also go int that cavity were the forks would be.

We purchased a tarp to go over it. 11X16 I think was the size. We chose the camouflage because the “inside” is a dark brown or green. We placed this side out. The thinking was that this color would be less offensive to those around us than the blue or silver which were the other choices.

We tied it all together by lacing a line through the cattle panel and the pallet.

Warning: watch those cattle panel cuts they can bite. I used a master key (bolt cutter) to make the cuts and the wires were sharp.

Now all I have to do is fill it with fire wood so it can dry to keep us warm next winter.
