Walter had been acquiring land in Oxfordshire, Bucks and Yorks early in 16c In 1523 he leased the Beaufeu manor here as his residence and after Oseney Abbey was dissolved in 1539 the advowson was granted to Richard Andrewes and Leonard Chamberlain of Woodstock who sold them in 1544 to son Richard in whose family they remained until 19c
In his will Walter bequeathed whatever sum as was necessary, at the discretion of his wife Isabel and son Richard, be provided for removing the tiles and lead from the roof, carrying out repairs and re-roofing the parish church recorded with their images in a window here www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/8423272587/
He also requested burial wherever he died and the Augustine Friars in Oxford was chosen who were bequeathed an annual income in return for prayers for his soul
Although Walter did not request any commemoration in his will a memorial brass was commissioned which was in place at the Augustine Friars at their dissolution in 1538
At this time many tombs and monuments were being defaced and sold, Walter's son Richard therefore took steps to buy his parent's brass and brought it back here to be united with their stained glass window www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/8423272587/ .

Round the edge in latin is the text from the Vulgate version of Job xix 25-27 in plural form
"For we know that our Redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though after our skin worms destroy this boyd yet in our flesh shall we see God. Whom we shall see for ourselves and our eyes shall behold and not another, though our veins be consumed within us".
In 1845 the marginal inscription became loose and on inspection revealed that the brass plate had been reused and that parts of the Curson brass were palimpsests, . The male effigy had been modified with a new head and feet for Walter and that the lower portion of Isabel’s brass was an earlier 15c plate. On the reverse of her upper plate was a palimpsest of a lady c1440, the new upper part having been engraved for Isabel. .
This original mystery couple were identified as Simon Kemp Esquire and wife Margaret (both d1442) who had been buried in Holy Trinity Priory Aldgate,London dissolved in 1532 when fixtures and fittings were sold off (this plate to the Cursons)
Their inscriptions reads "Simon Kamp iacet hic marmore carne sepultrus Lumine suffultus spiritus assit hinc. Anno Millemo Quarter C quadra secundo. Hic Margareta simul uxor contumulatur. Vicesima Sexta feria … decima que die Septembris post obiit uxor celum sibi spero paratum"
The origins of the brass demonstrate from the time of Curson’s death in 1527 until Aldgate Priory was dissolved and the Kemp brass removed c1532 . Again within 6 years the now Curson brass would be removed from Austin Friars c1538 to Waterperry. .

LJS 267 is a compilation, mostly in Latin, of religious, literary, historical, and natural-historical works, including classical and contemporary selections, as well as letters by humanist writers Francesco Petrarca and Donatus Albanzani. Over a quarter of the manuscript is devoted to the De ludo scachorum of Jacobus de Cessolis, a collection of sermons about the proper relationships between a king and various classes of subjects, compared to the rules of chess. Other moderately substantial texts include descriptions of various geographic regions from Honorius of Autun's De imagine mundi; a brief history of the Roman civil wars; and the Computus of Bono da Lucca, which deals with the calendar, lunar cycles, and calculations for determining the date of Easter. The manuscript is a palimpsest, with the lower text from the 14th century, probably legal.

The Tower of London, a dominating landmark in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, beside the northern bank of the River Thames, is a complex of buildings built over the years (architecturally described as a palimpsest) set within outer defensive walls. The Tower's primary function was as a fortress, a royal palace and a prison. It has also served as a place of execution and torture, an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, a mint, a public records office, and an observatory.
The Tower was founded in 1078 when William the Conqueror ordered the White Tower built inside the SE angle of the City walls, as much to protect the Normans from Londoners as for protection from outside invaders. Shakespeare, in Richard III, ascribed an earlier beginning, dating to Julius Caesar. The Roman origin is a myth, however, as is the story that the mortar used was tempered by the blood of beasts.
In the 12th century King Richard the Lionheart enclosed the White Tower with a curtain wall and dug a moat with water from the Thames. Until Henry III employed a Dutch moat building technique, though, it didn't serve as a very effective deterrent. Henry also transformed the Tower into a major royal residence and had palatial buidings constructed within the Inner Bailey. Between 1275 and 1285, Edward I built the outer curtain wall, completely enclosing the inner wall and thus creating a concentric double defense. He filled in the pre-existing moat and built a new one around the new outer wall. The Tower continued to remain a royal residence until the time of Oliver Cromwell who demolished the old palatial buidings.
A Royal Menagerie, largely stocked with animals from Henry I's Woodstock palace, was established in the 13th century. Popular theory dates to 1235 when Henry III received a wedding gift of three leopards from Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. In 1264 they were moved to the Bulwark, renamed the Lion Tower. A lion skull, radiocarbon dated to 1280-1385, was found, making it the earliest known big cat in Britain. The menagerie was opened on occasion to the public during the reign of Elizabeth I, and regularly by 1804. The last of the animals were moved to the London Zoo by 1835 and most of the Lion Tower was demolished.
For much of its history, the Tower was used as a prison. Royal captives were often housed in relative comfort, but religious dissidents were subjugated to severe torture. The first prisoner, Ranulf Flambard, Bishop of Durham, was held in 1100. Lower-class criminals were usually executed by hanging at one of the public execution sites outside the Tower, but seven nobles were beheaded privately inside the Tower.
The Tower as forification became obsolete with the introduction of artillery and the moat was drained in 1830. It served as the headquarters of the Board of Ordnance until 18555, and was occasionally used as a prison. During WWWI, 11 German spies were shot in the Tower. Irish rebel Roger Casement was imprisoned in 1916 and Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess, was interred during WWII. The last execution, a German spy, occured in 1941. Waterloo Barracks, the current location of the Crown Jewels remained in use as a base into the 1950s. In 1952 the Kray twins were held there for failing to report for national service, making them the last prisoners of the Tower.
Although no longer occupied by the Royal Family, the Tower remains a royal residence, and as such, maintains a permanent guard.

Se trata como en el palimpsesto de escribir sobre lo que probablemente muchos ya escribieron, de retomar lo que consideramos antiguo, lejano, cuya importancia radica en que la nueva narración hace una declaración sobre su existencia. Sobre la existencia de la belleza de lo que está y ha estado siempre.
The MemoryMarkers series is an ongoing exploration of sensory intake and our evolving ways of mapping, archiving, sharing and recalling our experiences- through both artwork and digital tools.
Each 3dimensional artwork shown in the gallery has an online image counterpart (seen here) which contains clickable notes and spaces for embedding information and links. Each piece becomes a notebook for a type of personal and shareable scrap-booking. Outdoor walks in nature (in this case, along the Peconic River) are captured in photographs and notes which can be stored and repeatedly accessed within the online images here on Flickr. My hope is that information may be gradually recalled through the corresponding 3D artifacts themselves, which are intended as beautiful and subtle memory devices.
A palimpsest is a manuscript page from a scroll or book that has been scraped off and used again- an early version of today's wipe board. Though half-filled with notes and perceptions of my own that I would like to share, I invite the viewer to practice and use each piece as a type of palimpsest, for the organizing and retrieval of their own special notes, links and memories. - Darlene Charneco

Palimpsest brass, Flemish, c.1410

‘Palimpsest’ describes a commemorative brass plaque that has been reused. The front depicts Elizabeth Blount, mother of Henry VIII’s illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy, duke of Richmond and Somerset. On the reverse (originally the front), is the head of the Virgin in a medieval architectural setting.
Elizabeth Blount (c.1500–1539/41), was the second daughter of John Blount of Kinlet and his wife, Katherine, heir of Sir Hugh Peshall of Knightley and his wife, Isabel Stanley of Elford. The Blounts had ties to Prince Arthur’s court at Ludlow, and subsequently to Arthur’s wife (and later Henry VIII’s wife), Katherine of Aragon. In March 1512, Elizabeth became one of Katherine’s maids of honour. She stayed at court till October 1518; there is no further reference to her at court from then onwards.
Elizabeth began an affair with Henry VIII, perhaps sometime in 1514. How long the affair lasted is unknown. The main evidence for the affair is Henry’s subsequent acknowledgment of the paternity of Elizabeth’s son. The child, named Henry Fitzroy, was probably born in June 1519, by which point his mother was no longer the king’s mistress. Henry’s official acknowledgment of the child came in 1525 when he bestowed titles and other honours on the boy.
In September 1519, Elizabeth married Gilbert Tailboys (c.1500–1530) who had been a ward of the crown since 1517 (owing to his father’s mental breakdown). The couple, who were awarded lands by the king, had three children together, a daughter, Elizabeth, and two sons, George and Robert. Elizabeth’s connections to the king were constantly remembered for she was the mother of Henry’s only acknowledged illegitimate child and for many years his only son. In 1532 the king sent her a sumptuous New Years Gift of a gilt goblet with a cover weighing over 35 ounces. Severeal of her relatives were also employed in her son’s grand household (Fitzroy had been made duke of Richmond and Somerset in 1525).
Gilbert Tailboys died in 1530 and in February 1535 Elizabeth married Edward Fiennes de Clinton, ninth Baron Clinton and Saye (1512–1585), who later became earl of Lincoln. The couple had three daughters, Bridget, Katherine and Margaret. On 23rd July 1536, Elizabeth’s son, Henry Fitzroy, died at St James Palace. Katherine’s own death date is unknown though it was sometime between January 1539 and June 1541. This brass is the only known contemporary image of her, and is on display at the British Museum, London.

Layers of wallpaper found at No 9/9a Aungier Street create a palimpsest, offering an insight into the successive phases in the life of one of Dublin’s oldest residential buildings.
This photograph was taken during Open House Dublin 2014.
Reviel Netz, who is transcribing the palimpsest, and William Noel, who directs the Archimedes Palimpsest project, study a disbound leaf of the manuscript in the conservation laboratory.
