I prepared this contraption to give you an idea of how we do our regular flying.

This one was not too busy; however, we have tons of cities/days pairing combinations in our schedule system.

The feature of this one is 'from coast to coast'. Once I was even put into a 'triangle': Vancouver-St' John's-Orlando.

This pair lives in a little sloping valley with only 9 large, old growth Dougloas fir. The remaining forest is cutover second growth with trees about 20-22' around.

A pair of Oklahoma Salamanders (Eurycea tynerensis) found while sampling streams for my thesis research. These were found less than ten feet apart, so it's a nice indicator of the variability of the species in pattern. These are from a metamorphic stream, which eventually dumps into a larger stream that has paedomorphic E. tynerensis present. They don't overlap in the streams; there is a section with none at all, making this a great study site to compare their habitats.

These metamorphs live in habitats with more small rocks and gravel, which clog the interstitial spaces that paedomorphs (which are gilled) need to get down into the ground when water levels drop. Metamorphs are terrestrial and not dependent on aquatic habitat, and are more typically found on Pennsylvanian/Mississiopian rock strata (which has many more small chunks of rock). Paedomorphs are found in Ordovician/SIlurian rock strata, which breaks into characteristic larger chunks ("chert" gravel).

This is the species my research project is based on, although since it's a community ecology project I'm surveying almost all of the animals present in the streams.

Chinese Brown Geese

There's a lot going on in this picture but I also like this couple surrounded by their natural habitat. White bellied sea eagles (Haliaeetus leucogaster) in Yala national park.

I don’t know what frightened this pair of Roe deer but they came tearing out of the woods and ran across where I was standing. They are in full flight mode, with the hair on their rumps raised to expose the white fur, signifying danger.

Riley's 13-year Cicada - Magicicada tredecim (female, body length 29 mm)

Location: Durham NC (USA)

I picked up a freshly-emerged pair for detailed photos. Female has no visible sound-producing organs at the base of the abdomen. In cicadas, sound-sensing organs are in the legs, apparently--see:

Alt and Harlan. Sensing of Substrate Vibrations in the Adult Cicada Okanagana rimosa (Hemiptera: Cicadidae). J Insect Sci. 2018 May 1;18(3):16. doi: 10.1093/jisesa/iey029.

I see reports that females of some cicada species do have tymbals, but I would like to see confirmation of that in the scientific literature. Reading popular accounts, it seems there is some confusion about tymbals being used for sensing sounds. I think that is incorrect, and they are the sound producing organs only. There are smaller organs for sensing sounds.

my favorite. but i had a lot of problems rolling the film on the reel. so, some of the negatives got really scratched up, this one included. but i really like it.

i asked chris (boyfriend) and jean (roommate) to do the weirdest things (laying on the floor head to head with lamps on them) because i trust them the most/am the most comfortable with (especially the boyfriend. even if he was reluctant).
